less expensive internet server?

Right now my neighbor and I share the expense and modem for 'Cricket'. There have been no problems- it always works anyway! We both wonder if there is a less expensive server out there though? I don't think using something like Verizon would work, because the little modem only works for about 1 hour at a time. (My neighbor tends to use the net during the day, I use it at nite). Neither one of us has a landline, so we can't go that route...

What else might be 'out there', please. THX

All the wireless companies offer something similar but I doubt the price is much less. You might want to look at Clear if they are available in your area. They start at about $35 per month.

Right now we pay $40 total- aren't there less expensive ones for those 'older' like us??! Another neighbor pays only $9.99/month, but she has a landline, which neither of us do. 'toaster.net' is very cheap if you have a landline... What about 'earthlink', or 'peoplepc'? Does anyone have these?

I had DSL briefly back in Fall '08 and upgraded to cable when a great deal from our local cable company (Allentown, Pa. area) came along. Oddly, ever since I moved the DSL to my relative's house across the street, she started having occasional issues with a temperamental modem. My cable service, though, has been working fine. 5 meg download vs. 1 meg for DSL. And the total price (TV, phone, internet) of the Triple Bundle we now have with our cable co. is about $1 more per month than we were paying previously for TV (cable company), Verizon phone and dial-up internet ! Not sure how it would compare to the Verizon TV/Phone/DSL bundle, but I imagine the prices are fairly identical. (The only draw-back for us is that the phone goes out when the cable does, so it's good we have cell phones for those situations -- which haven't happened yet.)

Hi, libbyliz. Your speeds sound amazing. I'm on cable too and my tests are half that. But everything works instantly so not sure it makes any difference, unless you're into gaming. (No matter the speed, it doesn't make my reading or typing any faster.) If you're trying to cut your cable bill, you just might want to ask if they have a lower tier you could try. I read about RR Light on a local computer forum and called to ask about it. (Best kept secret in town, not even any mention of it on their website.) They said it was very slow--not much better than dialup. But I'd read it was good, so I asked to try it with the understanding I could switch right back. They made the switch and the first place I checked was the Kitchen Forum Gallery and purposely picked one that said lots of pics. There was the slightest difference. Next tried U-Tube and still fine. Internet part of bill went from $35 to $15/mo. and still getting speeds in the 720-740kbps range. Plenty fast for my needs and love the price. YMMV as each franchise sets their own prices. Sandy

My guess is Netflix, hulu and such would not stream good over dial up but someone correct me if that thinking is wrong. I know I couldn't drop my cable like a few of my friends did. I like to watch shows when they are current and even when I use a few netowrks apps on my tablet to watch a show I miss some want me to log in with a provider so if you don't have one you are out of luck if you miss a show. I have time warner internet and TV, don't have a house phone so no need for their phone service. We have one box on the living room TV and that's it. We do have a TV in the bedroom but only get expanded basic on it, no box. I can access time warner live TV and on demand stuff on my laptop at timewarner.com when in bed or I can use the time warner app on my android tablet to watch live TV and on demand stuff up there so you might see if charter has that option of an app but of course you need wireless to do that. This saves me from paying for another box. I do subscribe to hulu and Netflix but don't have a roku for them and just use the apps on my tablet or watch from the computer, works for me as I am a big TV watcher myself and that's what I choose to spend money on. Now to convince the other half I need a 10" tablet for Christmas to watch movies on, he he. Mary

Earthlink and PeoplePC are both dialup services, I believe, and would require a land line. Anything $10 and under is going to be dialup, which will be much slower than your Cricket, I think.

It might be that I need to clean up my computer better than I know how, but sometimes even the Cricket is pretty dang slow...like tonite- it might take 2 minuted to get to a page...sigh..

I don't think you need a landline to get DSL, although the service is a bit more expensive per month. Check with your phone company for options.

Historically speaking, after any "introductory" offer as far as cost versus service goes you pretty much get what you pay for. Sometimes it turns out to be "penny wise and pound foolish".

I have Hughes and it is very expensive $64 a month. This is all that was available for a country girl. It will be years before DSL gets my way. I would love to have something that works as well and is cheaper.

I live in rural America and in the portion of my county that I refer to as the Bermuda triangle. There is no service of any kind for anything except a land line. Just recently I became part of a new 3G network, and so far I am satisfied with it. So keep your eyes and ears open for that possibility in our area.

Ok, according to the Cricket site at the link below, under that plan, it says, "2.5 GB of usage is good for 125 hours of basic web browsing or 850 digital photo downloads" (click the ? beside where it says usage level - 2.5GB at Best Speed) Then it goes on to say that if you exceed that 2.5 GB of usage in a 30 day period, you are subject to Cricket's Fair Use Policy. Your maximum speed may be reduced until usage is under 2.5 GB. You can check your usage anytime by logging into My ACCount at the link below.

So, have you logged in to check your usage to see if the two of you have exceeded the 2.5 GB allowed? I suspect you have an overage. Might your neighbor be using it a lot more than he thinks, or says he does? If you do have an overage, I would suggest you check the account time/balance before he starts using the modem. It sounds like 2.5 GB might not be enough for the two of you.

When you say you and your neighbor are sharing a modem, are you actually unplugging it from your computer and then he plugs it into his? I am not very savvy so am just trying to understand.

Personally, I think $40 a month is very reasonable in this day and age. As time goes on, things "might" get cheaper, but we are here "today". I feel that I am very lucky to get good service for $40 a month...I have high speed and local tech support. We get our high speed from signals that bounce off local water towers. I have a friend who has hugesnet and she pays much more than I do and is limited to her downloads, etc. I feel lucky...

the Monthly allotment column is based upon the network's 15GB allowance. For a 2.5GB monthly allowance you would have to divide the presented figure by 6.

thanks all... I guess we will have to stay with the Cricket- that seems to be the cheapest 'portable' modem (if that is the correct term). No, we don't use it alot- in fact I haven't been online with it for about 3 weeks. I go across the street to the library sometimes and use their freebie. My neighbor on the other side who uses Toaster doesn't seem to be any slower- she pays $10 a month. I will look into some of your ideas. Not having any problems now.
