Free Screen Savers - Safe Sites

I have a beautiful Xmas screen saver called "New England Snow" I found on screensaverstudio.com which someone directed me to and knew it to be a safe site.

Well, I guess it's time to change from the Xmas mood so I tried to find a comparable screen saver and thought it might be fairly easy, after all, I downloaded it 4 or 5 years ago so the thinking was there were probably others as good. I went to the same site to see what else they had with no luck. I know there are many sites that advertise "free" but I'm hesitant to try them - who knows what's safe these days.

Can someone recommend some other safe sites I could try. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Any site offering free stuff has to make their money somewhere. Many take third party software ( read 'phone home spy wares') and include that in the free download. Based on that theory when I go looking for clipart or graphics (I do not use a screensaver but it is the same principal) I always end my session with a scan using AdAware ot Spybot Search & Destroy to remove any unwanted parasite that may have piggybacked in during my surfing time.

Based on web site titles it is very hard to judge the validity of any given site. So having an up to date virus program running then scanning after for spywares afterwards is about as safe as you are going to get I suspect.

If you have XP you can make your own...

To use personal pictures as a screen saver

1. Ensure that you have two or more pictures in a folder on your computer. You can upload pictures from a digital camera or scanner, or copy them from the Internet or an e-mail attachment.
2. Open Display in Control Panel. Or right click on a blank space on your Desktop, select Properties.
3. On the Screen Saver tab, under Screen saver, click My Pictures Slideshow in the list.
4. Click Settings to specify the folder containing your pictures, define picture size, and set other options.

But for true preservationist interests the higher price seems better to me. In regards to people asking for seeds, this helps limit frivolous requests. When I request seeds, precisely because I intend to maintain them, that one time expense is the least of my concerns. And, it's not limited to the SSE. I ordered a sample of peanuts from a smaller, independent seed company, just a few weeks ago. That's all I ordered and, with S&H it cost over $7.00. It's easy to collect a lot of seeds. Is it really best to start with the assumption that the SSE is trying to "pull something off," so to speak? I really really doubt that. Philosophy regarding how to do the work of preservation... now there is plenty of room for discussion and diversity! The SSE seems to have struck a course for doing much of the preservation right on its own premises, using its own resources. Part of their reasoning may be that they have (as have I) seen many preservationists fail, either through some problem with planning, organization, finances, health or whatever. My personal approach has been to stick with the SSE and branch out. The GW, for instance, is a good place to cultivate interest in maintaining varieties and in recruiting gardeners to do so. I won't assume that ANYONE is going to be completely dependable. It's alright to discuss these things. But getting back to Kents letter, it still seems to me that the problem was not related to a conspiracy or dirty work by the board. Kent simply diverged from the board and wouldnt work with them. There are a fair number of references in his letter which I found deceptive; for instance, this thing about a board of advisers. Recently I called one up, which Ive known for years. I was informed that the "board" part of the advisors was really only in Kents mind. The opinion I was given was that it appeared that Kent used the term board of advisors more as a way to gain credibility himself. They were not consulted and had no real say in his decisions. Plus, as has already been posted above, they too, unanimously (if I counted correctly) stood with the board. There is room for plenty of discussion on particulars for how to do "the job" better. Gene is absolutely right. Historically sites with free screensavers, smileys and fonts have been identified as sources of viruses, malware, etc. This is not to say all sites dealing in these materials are fraudulent. A user just has to be careful and do a lot of research first. DA

that is very bad that means the site itself is infected and is spreading the rogue fake antivirus infections which are very very hard to clean up and many contain rootkits. Anytime you see one of those warnings pop up with an alert that says your pc is infected do NOT click on anything on the screen, doing so will be clicking to allow it to install even the red x button or close button are actually linked to install buttons, always either do a control alt delete and shut down your browser by ending task on it or simply hit the shut down button on the start menu and close the pc. If you do anything else you will likely be infected. Malwarebytes free will usually clean part of those infections but not all of it, which takes using one of the support forums for help cleaning the rest. I would stay far far away from that site. I would have Robby run malwarebytes asap! How to download and install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware application for Windows computers run FULL scan always.

Open Internet Exploer and delete the temp. inet files. Tools/Internet Options/ Browsing History. Open and empty the recycle bin. Right click on start/ choose explore/ right click on the C drive/ properties/ tools/ check now/ check both boxes and run it. It will tell you that it will run on a reboot. This will run scandisk in dos startup mode and ID lost clusters or bad sectors and repair them. You need to learn how to expore your hard drive and delete old install and temp files. Right click on start/choose explore. Under tools folder options choose to show all files. This will allow you to see the hidden folders. There is a lot of junk stored in the temp. directory under your user name. It is safe to delete all files in any folder named temp. You can run a search for *.tmp. again delete all of these files that the pc will aloow you to. Some are active and wil not delete. Windows downlaods and saves installs files. In a directory named software distribution/downloads. These can be removed. Windows creates startup files to help the pc run faster (right) in a directory in windows named " prefetch" These are safe to delete. Windoze will recreae them as needed. If you have an install CD than you can delete I386. These are a copy of the install CD. You will have to insert the CD for rvery update if you do this so its nice to leave them on the HD. Run a search for *.zip files. Most of these are install files. ID each one before deleting or move them to a temp directory for a day or so to make sure that they are safe to delete. First and foremost open System Restore and create a back up BEFORE deleting files if you aren't sure what you are doing. Learn about System Restore. It will allow you to mess with the files and yet have a restore point tyhat will take the pc back to that point. click on my computer/ properties/ system restore is at the top. Open to create a restore by start/ accesories/ system tools/ system restore. Read the help files on the internet. I am self taught. Thanks for the advice Owbist and thanks Rita on how to upload my own pictures and yes, I do have XP.

I need to explain why I love (as do my two daughters) the New England Snow scene so much. It is of course, a beautiful setting but the best part is the falling snow. It's beautifully done and pretty doggone realistic looking.
I guess I'm looking for realistic animation and I thought someone might know of a safe site.

If you google New England Snow you can see it and it's purported to be one of the most downloaded screen savers anywhere. Anyway, I'll visit some other sites and use my SpyBot too. Thanks.

Screensavers come with many favorite, especially family oriented, movies, books and games.
One of the greatest games, that even hardcore gamers breakdown and admit they love behind closed doors, is the collaboration between Disney and Japan's SquareSoft Playstation II game the Kingdom of Hearts. It was supposed to have its screensaver. As strange as it sounds, if you get a screensaver that is an advertisement in itself, they are much safer than those that aren't...

When my old hardrive failed, I lost this screensaver from Coke that was the Harry Potter Castle with Hedwig and the boats full children coming in. I am a quasi Potterhead, but I've cared for the movies less and less compared to the books...but that screensaver from Coke was just darling...the point being just look for your favorite themes and you might be surprised.

Still looking. My daughter's inlaws have one of a forest scene where a deer or rabbit or something appears then disappears. This is honestly, more to my liking - just not a big H.Potter fan, I know that's heresy to some, but I'll pass it along to my daughter who is - it does sound cute.

She'll ask but the inlaws probably don't know who put the aforementioned wildlife screen saver on their computer as they're not very computer savy, she said.

Tell your daughter to right click on desktop, and properties and go to the screensaver tab, and check out the name there. I am sure it can be found, once there is a name for it. I have downloaded many screensavers through the years, and like a lot of them, but my favorite is still Snoqualmie, which I did buy a long long time ago. Good Luck to you. :-)Cat

I didn't mean to suggest Harry Potter...I meant to say you can find what you are looking for in the most unlikely places, such as Disney, Scholastic, and even Coca Cola. TV networks...the lifetime channel? whatever its called? Keep your eyes open.

How safe...I don't know. No one liked the free ones at CNET very much.

The Harry Potter one is a copy of a copy made with MacSorcery...its not behaving as it should. Hedwig is not there! Boo hoo. Boo hoo hoo hoo.

Thanks Cat, unfortunately my daughter's inlaws live in Houston and we are in S.A. Maybe the next time she visits she can check & see if she can figure it out. You know, looking at the website you suggested, I guess I should look for 3-D screen savers and they don't have to necessarily be free but good quality and hopefully "safe".

But I'm curious - what is "Snoqualmie"?

Description of Snoqualmie here. Scroll down towards the bottom. By the way, it says win 95 and 98, and I did buy this when I was using windows 95, but it works just perfectly on Windows XP also. You will also notice a screensaver towards the top that is called Woodlands. It is a very good screensaver, and just might be something you would like. It is not free, however. :-)Cat
