Never mind, I was just trying to move too fast, there is a choice of how all connections are set up, the first/default is wireless, and I didn't correct to what I wanted. Not so different in this respect from XP, I just didn't look.

For any following along, this is something bad for Vista, or Acer, or me, or all the above. I took the trouble to reload the system with the DVD that I created for recovery of factory load. This worked very well, if a bit slow (30 minutes or more, wasn't counting) and pointed out one advantage to the partitioned HDD as shipped, Only the "C" partition is affected by the reload, not the "D" for data, of course at this point I didn't have any data. This time I started with my home network powered down, so when the new restart, another 30 minutes, was finished there was no "home network" lingering around. Then I set up a dial up and things seems to be better, at least there was a Vista (new) dialog box that showed my computer connected directly to the Internet, not going thorough "other something/forget". This didn't last, soon after bringing up IE7 the browser came to a halt, dial up still connected, just no data passing. The Visa (new again) dialog window now showed the same extra link between the network and the Internet, big red X. But, I was able to start the download of 10 Vista updates/absent the browser. This did fail too after a few minutes, but not before several of the updates (total size 26+mbytes, slow on a dial up) were received and installed, now trying to get the others with a restart of the connect for updates. I hope one of the updates will fix the problem, if not I'll not spend days on the telephone with Acer support, which seem to be a toll call, not 800 call, back the whole thing will go to Walmart, they gave me 15 days for a return.

Win32:Refroso, I don't like the looks of this and my abilities end here. It could be a false positive. But with the symptoms you have and some of the information I have found would feel much better if you go to a malware removal forum for more thorough scans and mostly an expert opinion. At this time I am going to supply a link where we send folks for Malware issues. Please follow the instructions at the link provided and post the required logs, it's important you post the logs. My guess is Netflix, hulu and such would not stream good over dial up but someone correct me if that thinking is wrong. I know I couldn't drop my cable like a few of my friends did. I like to watch shows when they are current and even when I use a few netowrks apps on my tablet to watch a show I miss some want me to log in with a provider so if you don't have one you are out of luck if you miss a show. I have time warner internet and TV, don't have a house phone so no need for their phone service. We have one box on the living room TV and that's it. We do have a TV in the bedroom but only get expanded basic on it, no box. I can access time warner live TV and on demand stuff on my laptop at timewarner.com when in bed or I can use the time warner app on my android tablet to watch live TV and on demand stuff up there so you might see if charter has that option of an app but of course you need wireless to do that. This saves me from paying for another box. I do subscribe to hulu and Netflix but don't have a roku for them and just use the apps on my tablet or watch from the computer, works for me as I am a big TV watcher myself and that's what I choose to spend money on. Now to convince the other half I need a 10" tablet for Christmas to watch movies on, he he. Mary
