Supplier keeps shutting me down

Hi, I'm new to this forum and in desperate need of your expertise!

Starting on 1/3, I went to get on line and noticed I wasn't getting on, checked my system info and found out I was down, called the tech and was told I used too many mb's according to my Fair Access Policy...200 mb per 24 hours. I'm thinking wow, I burned up the internet! lol

Any way, the policy states you will be shut down for 24 hours for letting this happen. I waited my time and it was put back on, THEN, it happened again! I went in to see my usage, it is happening when I'm not on the computer, like sleeping etc. This has happened 4 times now, my server justs sits on the other end of the line and calls me a liar (basically).

It is just me and my husband here and nobody is doing this from our computers! Please, any ideas???

I'm not downloading dvd's, mp3's or any bit torrent stuff, yet I did spend some time at yahoo news video's this afternoon.... But really not that much news video.

From about noon till 9pm... all by myself I used basicly 200mb. Pretty easy to use 200mb with broadband connections.

Toofast, I'm over to the other side of London,Ontario, so not so far from you and our winters are much the same. I don't run the main pumps over winter, I'm wary of ice dams being created and water being diverted away from the pond. I shut the waterfall and statuary pumps off for the winter, but, because of where my bottom drain sump is located,I run a small 500 GPH pump all winter to circulate the pond water and create a vent opening in the ice. The 500 GPH pump is located in the 50 gallon bottom drain sump, and pumps water through a 1/2" hose to the pond, where it keeps the surface water moving and allows for gas exchange. I have a 1200 watt deicer as a stand by in case of pump failure. I also totally cover my ponds over, first with a leaf net for a month or so, then with a translucent tarpaulin supported on a frame, for the winter months. That keeps the cold winds from blowing across the water surface. Your plan to use an aerator and a small deicer, with your large wattage deicer as a stand-by sounds great to me. As far as keeping your pump in a bucket of water, there is no need to do that, as mag pumps,unlike oil filled pumps do not have seals that will crack, if they are allowed to dry up over winter. But that is up to you. March would be a tad too early for start up,I should think. I push the envelope a bit by getting going at the beginning of April. And that is dependent on weather conditions. The main clean out the pond, I do in the Fall, rather than in the Spring. That way I'm not stirring up the "nasties" from the bottom of the pond, when the fish are still very susceptible to disease after going through a hard winter. You mention a check valve "sticking out of the water". As long as it is not filled with water, that could freeze and cause the valve to split open, it should be okay. If you could remove it and take it apart for cleaning and then store it, that would be a safer solution. Check valves should be cleaned out at least once a year, as the are a real collector of gunk and that can cause them to stick open or closed. The same goes for your pump. Take the impeller cover off and clean it out before storing for winter, whether it is kept in water or not. The gunk inside the pump can [and will] set up like cement over winter and cause the pump to overheat and possibly burn out when you try to use it next Spring. Hope this helps. "Horton"

Hey guys. I was having the same problem last week. My Trane heatpump condenser fan motor failed. I went out and got a Dayton motor from WW Granger. It was a 4 wire motor and my orig. GE motor was three wire. so I installed it by taping off the brown wire with white stripe and hooking up the other three. (This is a commonly used method of using a four wire in a thee wire pump.) Also replaced the split capacitor with a new one. After the fan ran for 15~20 minutes it would overheat and shut down. Like you I ran the water hose over the unit to let it drip and it would run forever... I checked all the voltages, etc. and voltage drop accross the contactor and everything was fine. The fan started fine but still overheated. FINALLY, I installed a seperate fan capacitor, 5 ufarrid @ 370v, on the advice of a tech support guy at Granger. VIOLLA! Dont ask me why but now the fan runs at about 35 deg.C in the air stream and stays there. If anyone has a theory about why this worked please let me know. If you want a wiring diagram on how this worked email me @kidshows@gmail.com and Ill scan it into a pdf for you. You have to make a jumper wire. (I used the wire off my old GE motor and just added another spade connector to match the capacitor). Hope this helps you out. Jae_tn2, I had a similar experience. Had a guy recommended by someone at church; supposedly he was helping young people get job skills and stay off the streets by employing them to work with him. Not only did he do shoddy work, and found ways to jack up the bill, but I discovered my wedding band was gone after they were done -- but had no evidence to link him or his helper to the theft that the police could use. Perhaps also true of the person who advertised, I was at the time rather naïve and thought I would be more likely to get someone with integrity through the church connection. Now I think I'm unlikely to get someone with integrity and appropriate skills no matter if religious or atheist or agnostic.

Wow, we have had this server for 2 years, we don't do much more than a few forums, ebay, etc. Not downloading big emails, No movies, music etc. We normally use about 30 to 50 a day between the 2 of us! This will happen even when our computers are shut off.

I've looked at our history, we don't do much of anything.
Wondering maybe if our hub could be bad?

If your loosing bytes while your computer is turned off you have a bad something, router/modem. Or there is somewhere a bootlegger using your sat-id number.

Or you have wifi and a neighbor borrowing your wifi connection.

we are trying this... Tonight we unplugged DH from router and we will see what our usage is in the morning. We are thinking maybe we have a bootlegger too. We don't know how to stop it if we do! We don't have wifi so we can rule that out. Also, we have checked for viruses, nothing found.
We have a computer friend and I've always believed he knows alot, he is baffled on this!

I dont have sat so know not much about it, but i used to talks with a canadian that steals it somehow - maybe he's got your sat idenity. To him it was free american TV more so than internet because he needs really fast internet to upload the DVD's he makes of sat tv movies. File sharing crazy.

If you can power cycle your satellite equiptment to reset it... maybe it has a software corruption that will fix itself,,, same with the Router.

I know very little about computers. I'm so frustrated with this mess! I do count on my ebay for sales and it sucks not being able to check that for 24 hours at a time. It just started on the 3rd???? I told DH we must have a ghost that likes to download after we go to bed. LOL

I will keep you informed, sure I will be shut down before friday again. In time I guess (hope) we will find the problem!

You have not mentioned which, if any, safety programs you have installed and if you have updated and ran those since this problem occurred. You might consider a couple of online scans to see what is there.

Housecall, BitDefender or Symantec are three you might consider, there are others of course.

I have a computer friend, he came over on the 5th and updated me. He said he found nothing on my end. I have Avast antivirus ( he does our web sites and such and says he did a though search) ?????

we unplugged everything last nite, this morning it's fine but according to my history we should use the huge amount of mb today or this evening. Even though we won't be here!

neither DH or I have been doing anything different to be using these amounts...go figure!

My first guess is dtv is shutting you down on purpose as they have sold more bandwith than they have.My second guess is a the updater theory avast,windows update,etc,etc 200 mb aint much I can do that in about 30 mins of my usual browsing, ebay,email. I would unplug the router every night (or anytime I wasnt using it) or maybe for a couple of days and see if it gets better once you start using up your bandwith I feel dtv just puts you on automatic lockdown as they cant possibly keep up with every customer individually. I am moving shortly and will have to go the satellite route also I think I will have to bite the bullet and buy at least the home office package its expensive but we are going to discontinue satelite tv service to pay for it.

Update! I have not been shut down since my post. We have been playing with ideas here and started by unplugging us from our hub...we have 2 computers. I have been hooked straight into the router, when DH wants his turn, I unplug and he plugs in! We are convinced it must be our hub! Going to get a new one and try again.

Still not positive this is the problem, BUT no shut down for 3 days?? Has to be it! Thanks for the ideas, will keep you posted!
