New Dell - Unreadable Desktop Message

Howdy. Yes, I could have spend hours on hours trying to get a Dell answer. See what happens when you guys are around . This is a Dell Desktop/W7/IE8. In the lower right-hand corner of my boot up screen is 2/3 of a message within its own pop up. The message has something to do with having or doing a recovery disk and/or to do a restore when applicable. The screen won't go away no matter where I click or which mouse button it is. The message screen won't drag and the significant part its wording is unknown. Any thoughts. Happy New Years, Gene

Might be telling you to make recovery and restore disks. If you haven't made those you need to. That doesn't explain why it doesn't go away but those disks could save you big problems down the road. Check your manual for directions to make the disks.

My feeling is that Bob is right and it is telling you to make the recovery disks. There is a program installed for you to do that, and you can probably use either CDs or DVDs. I would use the latter since they hold much more information and you wouldn't end up with so many. Then be sure to put them in a safe place in case you ever need them. They can be a life saver.

Because I loaded it on my computer and it screws everything up, and makes the computer lock up, no matter if it's IE or Firefox. One more thing I'm blaming on Vista, just because I hate it. Of course my AVG and Firefox is fighting all the time too, as is AVG and this site. well, none of that happens here at Elery's with his Mac, only at home with my Dell. Annie

Windows Vista Recovery is a fake computer analysis and optimization program that displays fake information in order to scare you into believing that there is an issue with your computer. Windows Vista Recovery is installed via Trojans that display false error messages and security warnings on the infected computer. These messages will state that there is something wrong with your computer's hard drive and then suggests that you download and install a program that can fix the problem. When you click on of these alerts, Windows Vista Recovery will automatically be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Once installed, Windows Vista Recovery will be configured to start automatically when you login to Windows. Once started, it will display numerous error messages when you attempt to launch programs or delete files. Windows Vista Recovery will then prompt you to scan your computer, which will then find a variety of errors that it states it cannot fix until you purchase the program. When you use the so-called defragment tool it will state that it needs to run in Safe Mode and then show a fake Safe Mode background that pretends to defrag your computer. As this program is a scam do not be scared into purchasing the program when you see its alerts. To further make it seem like your computer is not operating correctly, Windows Vista Recovery will also make it so that certain folders on your computer display no contents. When opening these folders, such as C:\Windows\System32\ or various drive letters, instead of seeing the normal list of files it will instead display a different folder's contents or make it appear as if the folder is empty. This is done to make it seem like there is corruption on your hard drive that is causing your files to not be displayed. You should follow the instructions in the link provided.. I read the article and felt saddened. We have owned Dell computers exclusively since the beginning. We still have 3 desktops and two laptops. Never had a problem all these years except for one desktop which is an Optiplex. This computer was purchased for our office and always had small problems since day one, 4 yrs ago. Others have criticized Dell service, but we have always found their service efficient and quick. We never sent a computer back, they would send a technician to the house to do any major repairs. We own two business machines, the Optiplex and a Vostro laptop. Both came with extended warranties. The laptop has always run well despite my husbands rough handling (dropped it twice from the desk and has knocked it out of the car a few times. Never got damaged...amazed! The Optiplex has had multiple service calls and it still doesn't work right. The USB drives keep quitting and require restarts to get things working. They have replaced the card readers and finally the motherboard. Same problems continue and I've learned to live with it. I do intend to contact them again after reading the article. I always liked the fact that their computers could be ordered with exactly what you wanted installed. You could configure the machine and not have to deal with all the junk usually installed on a store-bought computer. They do offer excellent service on their office machines. Very quick phone response, and always techs in the US. We are considering purchasing another desktop to replace my husbands 8 yr old computer and now am not sure if we'd go with another Dell. I tend to think of Dell like Ford. Ford seems to be finding its way back to America, maybe Dell will do the same. Jane

Thanks everyone. I guess I am just over whelmed with all this. I just got to feel like I could actually know what to do (most of the time) with my desktop & then I went & got this thing. For starters, I can't manage to find how to send mail on this IE7 screen. Don't know if it is the screen size (15.4) or IE7 or if I am just missing it. Between configuring the laptop, getting rid of all Dells extra tag ons, etc. I am losing it. Also, I have a webcam camera so I can talk with my grandchildren but after 12 hours of trying can't find anything to make it work. Googled & now I think that I have to download a separate program. Is that true & is there a safe one. Free if possible. Thanks so much - again. Debbie.

Thanks for helping. The message did have to do with creating a recovery disk. I thought I already had tried doing variations of my screen resolution to bring that mini screen to full view. You're right about what it's for. I accessed a screen to do the recovery disk but apparently I don't have the right disk to use. I have DVD-RAM; CDR; and CD-R. When we get out from under whatever snow there will be in these Western North Carolina mountains (presently maybe 8" with more to come) I'll get to Office Depot for the right kind. Thanks again, Gene

Each Dell computer, depending on the date of manufacture, is shipped with either a Microsoft Windows OEM CD, Dell Product Recovery CD or no CD at all. If no CD is supplied then you have to create your own through Windows itself. As you already know.

You have two options to create a Recovery Media - DVD Discs or USB Flash Drive. You can go with either of the options. You will need two (Could vary depending on model) 4.7GB DVD Discs or one 8 GB or larger USB Flash Drive accordingly.

See link for a basic idea. Your model may vary in the amount of disks you need and exact approach taken.

Do you have the exact model # of your desktop? and the operating system installed? We could probably get the exact steps to do this similar to the link shown..

You could use the CD-R disks, but it will take a lot of them. You'll be better off using DVD-R, or as Zep suggested, you could use a flash drive, but I'd be afraid of losing that or accidentally using it for something else, too.
