tip-out tray in bathroom?

Does anyone have a tip-out tray in front of the bathroom sink? I know they are more common in kitchens (where they are either loved or hated it seems), but I was thinking it'd be a great spot to keep a toothbrush and toothpaste. The trays pop out, so they can be cleaned. There'd be more air circulation than you get in a drawer or medicine cabinet.

Any pros or cons?

I can see where that might be handy for a few small often-used items but I don't think I'd store a wet toothbrush there. I think that a countertop toothbrush holder is best for fastest drying so my toothbrush doesn't get, well, icky(!) ;)

maybe if the tray thingie were made of a mesh material, or had 1000 holes drilled into it. Then, you still need to figure out how to get air to move (circulate) in real life. The tray is a small container.

My husband and I share a bath with our two teenage daughters. DH is good, he keeps his shaving and dental supplies on a shelf of the medicine cabinet. But the girls!!!- They leave all their stuff on the vanity, including hair straighteners,enough makeup and hair stuff to cover the face and hair of every girl from Long Island to Hawaii, out on the vanity. When I need to clean the vanity, I tape a note on the mirror warning them that everything will be thrown out on a certain day. Then I do a countdown, posting a note every day. And on the final day-I keep my promise. But your tip sounds good. I will buy them each a basket and explain its' use.

I sewed 2 loops of ribbon onto the corners of a cheap lingerie mesh bag. Then I hung those loops on 2 Command hooks mounted on the wall. Total cost Not the most attractive solution but I've given up on attractive when it comes to kids' toys and settle for organized. I didn't want to pay for a neon pink toy net and this accomplishes the same thing for cheap and I can throw it in the wash if it gets dingy. I've had it up for maybe 6 months and everything is holding up perfectly. When all her toys are in there, it is pretty full!

I'm glad you asked this question because I'm planning to redo our master bathroom and like you I want to do it thoughtfully to avoid problems of upkeep. I definitely will second that suggestion - no bar soap, only liquid - both hand and shower gels. I too would love a clawfoot tub but not in this bathroom. My tub area is a defined area sandwiched between three walls - no way to get access easily around the tub to clean from different angles. Beautiful but not practical. I can't wait to rip out that horrible whirlpool brand whirlpool tub which not only is a disgusting mess to clean the jets, but also turned yellow instead of remaining white. I haven't had any problems with my glass doors/wall in my shower and I suspect it's because the shower is large enough that the water normally doesn't hit the glass during a shower - I only have to deal with some mild steam condensation which is easy to wipe down. I often wonder about those with bathrooms where the shower has no door - what do you do about the steam - that steam carries fine particles of soap and shower debris and deposits them on the walls - at least if you have some closure on the shower itself, most of that gets deposited inside the shower which is a pain to clean - but much easier to clean a small shower area than all the walls of the bathroom? I love the look of the vessel sinks plunked down on top of the vanity top, but I think they are more difficult to keep clean than an undermount sink - I have no experience, just my guess. I hope maybe others with experience can comment. I will be looked to minimize sharp angles - so I'll opt for an oval rounded sink etc. I'm also looking to minimize nooks and crannies in places where I wipe often - so simple straight lines on faucets is a plus.

I used to have a problem cleaning the buildup from hair conditioners in our tub/shower. Then someone posted that the "fume free" version of Easy Off cleans scum like a breeze and it is safe on any surface. I found out that it works even on our formica tub surround. Cleans hard surfaces and the faucets and shower head too. It does not dissolve lime buildup. I need to use CLR or something similar for that. Only problem is the fumes. You will need to hold your breath and avoid inhaling the fumes. Strange, given the name. Works on the deposits of caramelized grease and oil that form on the edges and crannies of my self- cleaning oven. Nothing else ever did.

I keep my toothbrush in a plastic tray in a drawer, and don't have any problem with it. In the past I did use a tip out in the bathroom for the toothbrush. Worked fine for me.

I'm glad you posted this becuase i am debating the same idea. I am thimking of doing it and folding a paper towel in the bottom to catch any drips - with 4 kids I am always cleaning the bathroom so changing the paper towel regularly is no issue - unless i either think of a more practicle idea - or find a really cool toothbrush holder that makes a statement.I think it's a great way to take advantage of a small wasted space and get one of the more visually 'icky' items out of site

and if your toothbrush is out in the open area (on counter top?) what is it exposed to?

If your toothbrush is out in the open, technically, like everything else it is exposed to bacterial aerosol when someone flushes the toilet. Since the toothbrush is wet and already has bacteria on it, it may retain more than a dry surface.

However, since I haven't read of any deaths from people brushing their teeth, its probably not really a big deal, just someone's research. (Actually people with severe gingivitis or periodontal disease create a bacteremia whenever they brush, so they could potentially die from forcing their own bacteria into their bloodstream if they had certain existing conditions and a screwed up immune system)

Oh well, way OT. I think the tray could be great with the papertowel for blotting.

To me, the tip-out is gimmicky and unsanitary. Also, fittings/hinges tend to loosen up with use. davidro1 has a good idea above with mesh/perforation front.

I love the tip out in the kitchen, so i added one to the bathrooms - great place to store a sponge to sponge out the sink in between 'sanitizing' cleansing. Also a great place to store a hairbrush/comb... I'm all about making every inch work in one way or another. :-)
