Porblem with system restore

Today is my day for computer problems.

For some reason my MS wireless mouse is not working. I changed the battery and still nothing. I don't know if there's a driver of sorts that needs to be downloaded for this or not. It's only 7 months old. Anyway, since it was working yesterday, I thought I'd do a system restore to see if that solved the problem. I've done many in the past for other reasons.

Upon restoring to yesterday's date, I got an error message that reads: System restore did not complete successfully. Files were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occured during SR. It asked if I wanted to pick another date, so I picked this past Monday. I got the same message with no other explanation or specific error that is causing it.

Anyone know what I need to do? It's not good if I can't get a successful restore point now or later.

PS...this is a Gateway laptop using Vista.

Do you have Norton Anti Virus installed by chance, if so what Security Suite, as in Norton 360, 2008, ect..

If you do have Norton disable it and try a system restore.

Also try booting to safe mode and try to to a system restore from there.

1. Restart your computer.
2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows Advanced Options menu.
3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
5. Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

6 Try a system restore.

I remember having this happen to me some time back. I still don't know why, but I booted into SafeMode and was able to do the System Restore. You might give that a try and see if it works for you.

it probably has it all stored on a separate partition on the hard drive, you should have been prompted to create your discs as soon as you got the pc. If you have not done that yet I would suggest doing that asap then you will have the discs should you ever need them. That info should be in your information from the manufacturer. But you can just google your model and look it up online. You an also google how to make recovery discs for windows 7 and also how to make an image of your system. yes I did the custom install, and now have FF7.01. Some of the toolbar settings have carried through, most have not...only 3 add ons came through. Do you know of any way to find the list of add ons that I had so I can just hopefully enable them? I sure hate the thought of going through all that again. Things like this are what makes me say I live in the land of "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." But that would be too easy wouldn't it. thanks for your guidance...

I have Norton AntiVirus 2008 running (not a suite).

Stop Norton from running, then try a system restore.

Disable Norton--
If you have a Icon in the system tray for Norton right click it see if there is a option to disable it, Now try a System Restore. You could also Google "Disable Norton 2008"

If the above exercise does not work, please proceed with the instruction for entering Safe mode,
Once in Safe Mode, go to system restore and try it from Safe mode.

I tried disabling Nortons then running a regular restore to no avail. It was, once again, unsuccessful.

I was successful doing it in Safe Mode though. Thank you for that instruction.

This didn't solve my mouse issue, but after researching it and trying different things regarding the mouse, I've come to the conclusion this MS Optical 3000 wireless mouse must have a VERY SHORT LIFE span.

Anyway, getting back to SR, what I'd like to know is does this mean I will never have a successful SR running from Windows? I'd prefer to do it that way in the future.

Open Mycomputer from the desk top choose properties tell me how much ram is installed?

Then open in Mycomputer again put your mouse over Local Disk, a small window will pop up, what does it say about Disc space it should list the total hard drive size, and amount of free space left on Disc.

******You might consider getting rid of Norton it does not get along with some PCs and there a very good free Anti Virus Programs available.

Just so you know removing Norton usually requires a special removal tool to get rid of it all, if this is not done left over files will be left, it's a simple process but needs to be done correctly.

I have 3 gig of ram. I couldn't find anything saying "local disk", but my partition C says 218 GB free of 287 GB. Not sure if that's what you mean.

Actually, I do like Nortons. But, my subscription is up soon, so I'll decide what to do then. I'm aware of all the great free anti-virus' out there.

BTW: my mouse is working now. I took the transmitter and placed it back in the mouse, and it must have reset itself. Yippee....I hate using the built in mouse.

Nothing wrong with Norton and you have plenty of ram to support it, but it can cause issues on some PCs, The reason System restore worked in safe mode is safe mode Disables Most Running programs Including Norton, so some program is interfering with System Restore and that Program is most likely to be Norton.

Drive information looks funny...

If you just open My computer you should see a little symbol of a drive (Local Disc) put you mouse over it just hold it there see if that info comes up and post it.

If it's a 300gb hard drive, where is the other 13Gb? Maybe a recovery partition ??? doesn't seem right....

I have a recovery partitions (d drive) that says:

Free space 5.20GB, total size 11.0GB.

I found the local disk which says the D drive has 40% free space; the C drive has 70% free space.

Does that make sense?
