Update to my problem - see link re original post

The repair install using a XP Pro install disk did not work; in fact, it wiped my HDD, and I was left with a blank drive. So, following helpers on another forum I was referred to, I did a clean install of XP Pro. However, I later found out that the disk I had was used for demo purposes in a college class and had a very restrictive configuration of Open DNS on it that would not allow me to download and install the program I needed to restore documents I had backed up to an external HDD. So I followed my gut instincts and resorted to the use of my recovery disks made when the computer was new. That also restored the Recovery Partition to my HDD. This involved no more work on my part than the clean install of XP Pro, since either way the MS updates had to be done and programs installed. I was able to restore the backups I had made of my documents, and I am slowly getting things back to "normal". Since I had a disk for SP3, it saved me some downloading. I am still getting notifications of MS updates, so there is still some work to do. My inclination from the get-go had been to follow this path, and I lost several days by not doing that. Sometimes one's instincts are the best guide after all.

I thank one and all who offered help, and even if it didn't work for me, I still appreciate those efforts.

Bobbie
