Burning a large .iso file

I downloaded a Linux distro (.iso) that I think I might like to install on my XP computer. However, the file is too large for burning to a DVD, since it is 1,625,088KB. It is recommended to use ImgBurn for this task, which I do have installed and have used to burn another .iso file. How do I go about burning this file to a disc? Sorry to be so thick-headed about this, but my experience with this sort of thing is very limited.

Thank you for any help. By the way, the distro is Zorin, which is supposed to be very much like Windows 7 in appearance, menus, etc.

Grandms that is only about 1.5 gigs and a DVD holds 4. something so you have plenty to spare.

A comment or three if I may, perhaps others might jump in too. You are/have been considering a dual boot for a while. Ever thought of using VirtualBox?

I ask because back in the day when dual booting was the latest toy I found having to select an operating system each time the computer starts annoying. A few days ago I installed VirtualBox on my Windows 8 confuser and since have installed 2 different Linux plus XP Home.

That way you boot in the default O/S but can jump into or out of any other O/S you care to install inside your virtual box. The reason I included XP was because HP are giving me a bad time when trying to install my stand alone scanner on Windows 8 so I hope to install those drivers on the XP.

Just something to consider perhaps........

hi cena, i feel for you! AND i have a really filling soup recipe that's great for this time of year. it's wonderful if you have leftover turkey, but if not, this is the time of year to find those huge turkey drumsticks in the meat section for cheap! now bear with me, i don't usually measure things out... TURKEY & LEEK SOUP Ingredients: * 2-3 Leeks, use both the white part and any green that isn't too tough * 2 whole turkey legs, skin and all or the carcass/bits and pieces of leftover turkey * 1 whole onion * 3 or so carrots * several stalks of celery * 1/2 pint of whipping cream * potatos--optional if you don't want too many carbs * optional: turkey drippings (absolutely! if you have some) * chicken stock, if necessary * kale, if you like (optional) this makes a big soup pot full chop and saute the veggies in olive oil until soft and then add in enough water to cover the two turkey legs or whatever bones and bits of leftover turkey you're using bring to boil and then simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, but definitely until the turkey legs are cooked through. strip meat from any bones and blend everything. put the mix back on the stove and add as much cream as you like--i add the whole half pint because i love it! salt & pepper to taste. add additional chicken stock or turkey drippings if you think the soup is too thick. you can add water if you don't have stock, but it may dilute the flavor. i like to simmer in some chopped kale to add texture, but it's not necessary. VOILA! serve with a dollop of sour cream or some cheese grated on top, if you're not counting calories. i made this soup for geoff's family right after thanksgiving (they were going to throw the turkey carcass out AND the drippings--blasphemy!). it was a big hit even though i think i added so much turkey that it overwhelmed the taste of leeks. maybe because i don't measure, but this soup always turns out different for me, texture-wise. i don't often add the potatos, but i have when i've had some i needed to use up. it really thickens up the soup, though, so be warned. this time of year, leeks should look their best in the supermarket AND kale (especially the lacinato variety) is especially sweet. at other times i've sauteed the veggies with various herbs in the first step, but i find the soup is hearty and flavorful enough without them. happy holidays, cena, and hope you make the switch to solids soon! -ming

Pam, I'm not sure what you meant by that but i think you're missing the point. It's about developing better root system regardless of where you plant, what the climate is and what tree species are. Better root system means better/faster establishment. It is a pain in the butt dealing with one long tap root that get circled around in the container. You have to mess with it to get it straightened out and not to mention more digging to get it deep enough. You don't have to worry about it with rootmaker's way. You just simply dig a hole and drop the tree in and move on. Here is the info from rootmaker website about seedlings plant out.. Question: Do you have any information on the use/success on the out planting of container seedlings grown in RootMaker II containers directly in the field for conservation/reforestation type projects? Answer: Tree seedlings in RootMakerÂ® II propagation containers are routinely taken to the field when they are 12 to 16 inches tall and 3 to 4 months old. This has been done by hundreds of nurseries across the country. Most do fall planting Â September or October and some have drip irrigation and others do not. (Drip irrigation assures nearly 100% survival. But even without drip irrigation, the success rate is quite high, except for the occasional severe drought immediately following planting). The primary reason for planting tree seedlings at a larger size is that in the small growth stage, telling seedlings that will make winner trees from culls is tough and the cull rate may be as high as 25 to 30% or more for the oaks. In one gallons, the cull rate drops to 7 to 10% and with 3 gallons to 2 to 3%.

While looking for an accompaniment to fajitas I came across this in "Fresh Ways With Vegetables." Think of it as either a side-dish or a warm salad. Either way, it's pretty good. Stir Fried Jicama w/Ginger & Cherry Tomatoes 1 jicama, about a pound 1 1/2 tbls peanut oil 1 tbls ginger, minced 1 garlic clove, minced 3-4 drops hot sauce 1/4 lb spinach, in pieces 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 1/4 tsp salt Black pepper 1/4 tsp sesame oil Peel jicama. Cut into half-inch julienne. In a wok, heat the peanut oil over high heat. When the oil is hot, add the ginger and garlic and stir fry them briefly, about 15 seconds. Stir in the hot sauce, then add the jicama and stir fry two minutes. Toss in the spinach and cook until it is wilted, about a minute. Add the tomatoes and stir fry until they are softened, about a minute more. Sprinkle the mixture with the salt and pepper. Stir in the sesame oil. Serve immediately. My notes: Use the big jullienne blade on the mandoline, which cuts smaller than half inch, but worked well. Used 12 grape tomatoes instead of the 8 cherries, which worked out perfectly. A quarter pound of spinach isn't near enough, should at least double it next time. 1/4 tsp sesame oil is a joke. Use more, or leave it out.

Linux... command line? sudo fdisk -l to see where the flash drive is mounted. In my case it was /dev/sdd then sudo dd conv=notrunc if="/dev/sdd" of="image.iso" to make an image of the flash drive then cdrecord -v dev=/dev/cdrom image.iso to burn the image onto a DVDR (my flash drive was 4 gigs) I just tried it using the only thing I had handy, a bootable USB flash drive containing Super-Grub. At the end, the DVDR booted. :) Note: My first try failed because I used /dev/sdd1 instead of /dev/sdd so I didn't catch the entire drive, boot sector, etc. What happens if you have a 16 gig bootable flash, I have no idea. And as you probably already know, "dd" (Disk Druid) is also known as Disk Destroyer so... use at your own risk) ---------------- Of course the above assumes your DVD burner will make the burn. If it doesn't recognize an empty disk, I doubt it will burn one. Not that I wouldn't try anyway. :)

Duh! Hanging my head while I give myself 100 lashes with a wet noodle! If one uses the correct medium, the file will fit. I think I had more than a "senior moment" when I tried two times to burn the file to a CD rather than a DVD. I hope everyone has a good laugh because I really feel like a fool!

Thanks, Zep, yes that's the way it works as I have done it before and did it again this time. ImgBurn is a good burning program, and it's FREE.

O, I think I remember reading, that with this os, you have a choice of booting with it as the default or with Windows. But if not, I'll look into Virtual Box. Maybe it's the same, maybe not, so I'll investigate, and thanks for the suggestion.

If you dual boot but find yourself sitting there trying to catch the grub menu to select the same non-default menu choice time after time after time(like I did), you might want to try this:

Put the following in /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

Then run:

sudo update-grub

That way it will boot whichever OS you booted into last time.

I use DVD-R 7.5 gigs for the .iso's I download to make sure there is room.

The virtual box is installed on windows which eliminates the ability to dual boot. Zep and I use them for experimenting with the removal of malware. I like Virtual Box better than dual boot. That way, if you like, you can just minimize the Virtual Box and have Windows there and ready to do what ever is needed.

When you dual boot and you find you want to use the other OS you have to go through the process of rebooting and choosing which OS you want to boot into. For me that is a pain and takes too long.

Right now I have the whole thing all screwed up. I can only boot into Zorin and don't get past the first "splash" screen with the big Z on it.

Right now I'm just going to rest and ponder. My hasty actions in installing this led to the mess I'm in now. I cannot even find a way to boot into Windows although all my XP files are on the computer when I open My Computer. But I cannot find a way to get out of Zorin. Well, this may be beside the point since I can't even get Zorin to open now.

I do have a "clone" of my C drive I made in November, so hopefully not all is lost. If I can just find a way to get the Linux (Zorin) off and boot back into Windows XP. I did find instructions for uninstalling this, but they did not work and really fouled things up. Thank goodness I have another computer.

You might try holding the shift key down while booting to get the menu to show up.
