My first thought is that you have a high-speed connection and your system is still configured for DUN also.

Go to control panel>administrative tools>services
scroll down to Telephony ,on left panel click Start service
on right panel, highlight telephony, right click , select Properties,select automatic or manual click okay.

Jane, first thoughts. Have you made sure your program you use to connect your office and home is working properly? Perhaps visit the web site of your VPN (virtual personal network) provider and read their FAQ's as they may have encountered this before.

Are we talking XP or Vista?

You don't use a phone line for your connection, do you Jane? Is it possible that you disabled or removed your computer's internal modem? In my Win XP Home SP3 system, both services are Started but set to manual. I do not use a phone line to connect, so have no use for my internal fax/modem. A little trick for looking at and changing services, is to double click on a service (like Remote Access Connection manager) then you can view the Properties. Now look at the dependencies tab. Each service that has to be Started for this service to run will be listed here. You can quickly check the individual service for it's state, by simply looking across the line that is listed. Start them by double clicking on them and looking at the General tab. There will be a button about 2/3 down the page where you can select Start.

Just in case you don't know how to find services, you click on Control Panel and then Administrative Tools. Services will be there.

Trouble with computers is it takes so many clicks to find what you want you don't remember how you got there!

I found telephony and turned it on. I assumed that was a dial-up modem and had stopped it quite a while ago. I found a bunch of things disabled or stopped and started everything except for anything allowing remote connections.

I have XP Pro, a cable connection and am not networked. I share the internet connection with other computers in the house wireless.

Raven, thanks, I did read that article but couldn't understand a thing it said.

Owbist, the Go To My PC is working and I was working on it today. I actually went to event viewer because I was getting some 'timed out' notices and pages were loading very slow.

I shouldn't fool around with service or misconfig. I know I did shut off telephony because I thought it wasn't needed.

Until I learned how to access certain areas of the computer, I kept numerous cheat sheets to refer to when it was needed. I cannot tell you how useful Google is!!!

All this takes time. Not sure what caused my problems but I have everything to starting automatically and now I have 40 processes running when I had 24 before this.

My list is on the Helper Tool thread before I restarted everything. I need to google all these entries now. Very time consuming.

Jane if your computer is running well do not be bothered by 40 items running. The only thing I saw in the other thread that you may wish to Google is the 'Digital Line Detect' entry. It seems a Dell item but may not be necessary.

I have 38 items running, trimmed from 48 a few weeks ago and I think my machine is running pretty good.

How does your Event viewer log look now you have restored some items?

Well it seems the errors stopped after I started everything. Looking at Application I found this,

There is no info at the MS site. This error says something about missing Dlls and not being able to show messages from a remote computer. It also states the Disk Cache Director does not exsist or cannot be accessed. I am not networked and wonder about remote computer. I do share a wireless signal with 2 other computers in my house. Is that relevant?

Any thoughts?
