Fall Paper Flowers & a Bird Basket

I posted a pic of my wall hutch on the porch earlier ~~ still wanting some hydrangeas for the top. Well, I asked a friend if she had cut some of hers cause mine were small & already getting bare. Anyway she found me something else ... paper hydrangeas @ a garge sale ... cheap! ;-)

i bet.. if you found the latin name... you could google the number of days to maturity ... or!!!!! put the bag over the flower.. some peeps use old nylons.... twist tie the bottom.. and let them mature ... ripen and dry right on the plant ... nick.. you have to start learning the latin... if you goggle birds eye... all you will get is frozen pea recipes.. and that is why.. when you want real good info.. you need to drop the common names.. and go with the latin .. ken ps: if you have a named variety ... you might want to google. .and find out if they are fertile... or sterile ... before wasting too much effort....

Mamaspud, Even at low temperature (garage in winter months) the microorganisms like bacteria, fungi and algae thrive in water that has organic matter in it. Algae are relatively harmless but bacteria and fungi may start a nasty disease due to which the stem may rot and the come spring the plant may fail to root. The rot usually beagins at the bottom of the cutting (one which is rubbing to the bottom of the container). "Bucket o Brugs" method raises the stems and prevents mashing of the stems. I have adopted this idea and have gone a step further by adding vary small quantity of antibiotics. Last year I used expired "cipro" (10 microgram/ml) and a dab of "lotrimin" to the bucket o brugs. I changed water every month, and added the antibiotics as before. I did not notice any rot (except for minimal algal growth) in the bucket with antibiotics. For the purpose of comparison I also had a bucket o brugs without any antibiotics (water changed on monthly basis), this had a lot of slime accumulated on the bottom and sides and 3 out of 10 stems were very mushy at the bottom, they did not develop healthy bunch of roots. I used cipro because i had some (1 year past their expiry date...but still had plenty of potency, for experimenting with plants it may be OK but definitely not to be used for serious treatment, remember that it is "expired" DO NOT USE on humans and animals unless advised by a competant authority - your doctor or your pet's vet). Lotrimin cream (OTC) came from the general stash in medicine cabinet, I made a realtively dispersed suspension by vigorously shaking a dab of the cream to some water in a ziploc bag and added this suspension to the bucket. My conclusion: Antibiotics help cuttings survive in the bucket.

Oh, I'm so jealous of your grosbeaks and redpolls, Pudge! I think my neighbor is feeding too well, because the grosbeaks are always hanging around there and I'm lucky if they pop by for a brief visit. I did get some Evening Grosbeaks in for a good feed this spring and again this fall. That was a thrill to spot them, as I hadn't seen them before. I haven't seen a redpoll for about 3 years now. I find them so cute. The last time I saw a flock of them was early in the spring/late winter. Do they stay around all winter? Someone told me once that they cycle...and I don't remember why...was it their migration pattern maybe? I'd be interested to know if someone had any thoughts on that. I also had my first White Breasted Nuthatch yesterday! Another cutie and fun to watch...very vocal. He was still here this evening. RE: salt and birds...I'm thinking they probably require certain amounts naturally and find it somewhere, but with bird feeder fast-food that contains salt, they might eat alot of it because its easy to get and therefore get too much salt. Hi Sue and all! yes, the summer has flown- it sure has been a hot one! looking forward to the pow-wow but I will have to leave a little early- going to Frankfort for one of my great nephews birthday party... a couple of things: can I dig iris, peony, day lily now? I usually put them in plastic grocery bags with holes punched in for air- what about perinnials? If I dig now, should I put them in pots? or what??? I have lots of seed that are not this year's collection- I wintersowed some of them and they did great.. I will bring some for those who want to try them.. I will have some wintersowing supplies to share- I will have some heirloom bean seed to share- I will try to update my 'have' list so you can browse before the swap- yes, everyone update your wants list... I need to seriously downsize my garden- it has become an overgrown mess- I just can't take care of it like I did when I first started gardening in 1997 :))I hope to share a lot of things with people I know will love and take care of them.. a sad note: many of you remember my Mom "mema"- at the end of June, her kidneys shut down- she was in the hospital for a month and then to rehab for a couple of weeks- they put her on diaylsis, but could not keep the fluid down and blood pressure up- she passed away on Aug 8th she was 88 years young-- we sure miss her thankful for all the time we had together, and that she knew we were there for her all the way. my son and his wife and baby are going to buy Mema's house-right across the street from my house- it will be so nice to have them close- My Mom and Dad bought the house new over 50 years ago, and we just couldn't let it go...they are excited about living there and raising their family.. looking forward to seeing all of you- best wishes, Linda

...and the bird basket I put tog for a silent auction for our 'Friends of the Library' coming up Sat. @ the local craft show in town. Hubby built the birdhouse, I added some of my photo cards of birds & a wood cardinal from Hobby Lobby ... also some small pinecones from our vac in So D. this summer. Hope you enjoy ~~Jeanne S.

Jeanne, love your new flowers. So wonderful your DF. They look like they could be made out of patterns? I've wanted to make some out of coffee filters and dye them different colors. Thought this might work for DGD and I when we make our angels.

Your so sweet to make this darling basket up to donate. I see you've attached some of your beautiful cards. Someone is going to score big time with this one!

punk...I added the link to the 2nd post on making DIY paper Hydrangeas ...I'm going to try it. You're right...they are made of patterns ... I bought some old patterns for 25 cts each the other day.. I had donated a bunch of my old ones so now I buy them back! ~~giggle. Jeanne S.

The paper hydrangeas are neat they are perfect for the top of your shelf, and a great use for old patterns.
I love the basket you put together for the auction. The winner will very lucky to get it.

What a good friend, those paper ones are pretty neat. I probably wouldn't have known they were paper if you hadn't said so.

Love your basket! Someone is going to be very happy going home with it. That cardinal is really cute!

Does anyone here, besides me,
Remember using this same technique
with Kleenex tissue to make flowers?
We made tons of them for various things,
back in the '50s.

Punk, how do you make flowers from coffee filters?

There are alot of tutorials on making these flowers on you tube. I will have to check out the one Jeanne shared. Here's a bolg that has some pretty flowers too. I didn't see the one that I really liked before.

My DGD and DM made so many crafts and yes 'Rusty' they made kleenex tissue flowers in the 60's.lol Hope you make some and share pictures with us.
