CD drive missing

When I click on my computer, there is no CD icon. I went to help and it suggested checking the Device Manager and I did. There is a yellow exclamation mark. I tried updating and that didn't help. I remember years ago we would uninstall it and it would re install when when rebooted. I did not do that without checking with you all for suggestions. I did get a warning and I remember that from years ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry forgot to tell you the specs. I have Vista Home Premium, using FF and don't know what else you need to know.

Go ahead and try to uninstall it then reboot see what happens. There is also a fix for the issue. We can get to that if needed. Keep in mind that this is a mechanical device and subject to failure.

Am I missing something? No, you're not missing anything now, maybe someday when your photo collection grows. A DVD writer and dvd discs are fairly new to me. I downloaded Windows Vista Ultimate Beta from Microsoft and the file was around 2.5GB and I had to burn it to a DVD because of the size and to install it. Then I did a backup of my stuff like photos, music, documents, and downloaded programs that I'd been putting off for a long time. Amazing how much stuff will go on a DVD disc. Yea, 1GB jump drives are cool, that's big enough to hold the important things.

Does your PC have software to play DVDs? What operating system does it have? If it's Windows, it probably has media player, but it may not recognize that it should launch for the DVD. I prefer vlc media player, which is a free download. It does a lot more than just DVD playing, but it does a good job with DVDs. Here is a link that might be useful: VLC home page

Mike, I have an Inspiron 1545 - is this what you mean? Let me know if you need more info. I would still like to download the driver for my laptop, but how do I do that? I do consider myself "adventerous", but not when it comes to computers, haha. owbist: thanks so much for the info, but like I told Mike, I don't feel comfortable when working on the hardware in computers. This morning I'm NOT able to burn a CD, but right before that I was able to play a movie. I don't know what is going on. Now I'm sure I'm not able to watch a movie either. So, how do I "download" this driver file. I see it, and it is actually in my download folder, but when I try to download it, it says there are no files to download. When it says download, it says "save file", not RUN, like I want it too. Any suggestions on this? Thanks! I appreciate all the advice.

Also, I can not open the documents that I copied from the disk. I get this message.... The drive or network connection that the shortcut Shortcut to .lnk refers to is unavailable. Make sure the the disk is properly inserted and the network resource is available, and then try again. OK I need this for my work.....HELP

Zep, that is the fix I found and it fixed the problem. It recommended their fix it site which I bookmarked. Thank you so much for your help.

The Vista on-board Help has many troubleshooters available. Just open the Help and type troubleshooter into the appearing window's search bar. A lot of potentially valuable information will then be offered over several pages.

I tried Vista'a help and all I found was to check in device manager, no way to fix it. I did not know about using "trouble shooting". I googled and couldn't find the right words I guess. I finally stumbled across one post about the same problem. That is how I found the fix, but wanted to hear from someone here before I tried it.

It's such a common problem and is usually resolved in 1 of 3 ways.

1 System Restore.

2 Uninstall the device in the device manger and reboot to reinstall it.

3 Delete the upper and lower filters in the Windows registry. That's most likely what the fixit did. Without having the user going in and doing it.

If none of those work then the device is either disconnected or it's broken..

The problem was probably the results of the reformatting, so no restore date. I have no idea what the upper and lower filters in the registry are and would not have gone there on my own.

I had to reformat because my password would not work. I was really surprised Toshiba couldn't set a new password for me since they had proof it was my PC. It's a good thing I like this stuff so much and back up often or I would have really been frustrated. LOL

there is a way that is pretty simple to change the password in the system I am very surprised Toshiba did not help you do that and made you do a reformat. You can google it and find it quite easily.

Raven, when I think back on it I realize I should have asked for a supervisor or called back and got another tech. I know there has to be a way. I didn't question it. Quite often I am not sure of the password, but this time I knew it was right.
