Firefox 3.5.7 and adblock

I allowed myself to be coerced by persistent messages to download Firefox 3.5.7.

Now my adblock is much less efficient. I see blank blocks labeled 'advertisement' reminiscent of old magazines.

Any suggestions on getting rid of these. On some sites where I saw no ads before blank box labeled 'advertisement' now takes up half a page.

I've got the same setup...but no problems. Only thing I can suggest is to uninstall and reinstall AdBlock Plus, or to even do the same with FF. Alternatively, you could use Google to find a slightly older version of FF, uninstall version 3.5.7, and install the older version.

have you checked your adblock to see if you have the latest updates for it?

you said adblock did you mean that or do you mean adblock plus?
if you have adblock plus are you using the subscriptions from this page with your adblock plus? if not definitely do add these to it.
    Rick752's EasyList Subscriptions

if you do have just plain adblock I would remove it and go with adblock plus withe the 2 above mentioned subscriptions.

ad-block plus blocking some pics and not others?

I posted this also in the thread in question. With the link that the OP posted, I can see the pictures. With the clickable thumbnails that Sue provided, I can see them. When I click on the bird bath picture, I get The action that you were trying to perform has failed. . When I click on the barn picture, it takes me to the OPs photobucket where I can see the picture. Why I can see one and not the other is a mystery. I'm using FF with no add-ons. Bernie

    Problems seeing uploaded images? Firefox?

I had that problem on a couple of GW-uploaded pics. I temporarily disabled AdBlocker and could see them. I have it enabled now and not having any problems. If ads are the price to pay to see pics then I'd rather not see pics.

I was having a problem with FF after an update. It was hanging up when I clicked on a web site. I uninstalled FF and re installed and no more problem...yet!

    Time to catch up guess.

I still have FF 3.5.5 and adblock.

I've forgotten, if I get 3.5.7 and adblock plus and Easy List, do I remove 3.5.5 and adblock first?

    TIA

I think my problem came after an adblock up grade, but not sure. I just uninstalled FF and did NOT check the box to uninstall my preferences. When I installed the new FF all of my settings and the ad block stuff was just like it was before. I haven't had a slow connection yet, working fine.

what I would do is go into your extensions list hilight your current adblock select remove let it remove it I think you will have to then restart firefox, then go to Help, updates and select to update firefox it will do it right over the current one and nothing will be lost, then after that is done and it restarts firefox go get the adblock plus extension then put the subscriptions on it.

RC, I have followed the steps you gave and it went well until I got to the Easy List site. The only place I saw to get it was on the left side of the page. I hope that was right. Also should I get the Easy Privacy?

Where does it show on my pc that I have the Easy List?

    TIA

If anyone is not having trouble with their FF please consider leaving things be right now. On January 8, 2010, FF 3.6 RC1 (release candidate not to be confused with a beta) was released so it should be soon for the full release. The link to the RC is below.

If you want to update your EasyList subscription for ABP: Firefox Tools>ABP Preferences>right click on Filter Subscription EasyList>On the appearing drop down menu select Update Subscription Now. The status report will be down two more lines.

yes I get both of the ones on that Ricks page all you do is click where it says add to ABP and it will add the subscription to your adblock plus, just scroll down the page in yellow are the 2 lines one for easy list one for easy privacy to the right on each line it says add to ABP click there.
To see what you have enabled in adblock plus go to tools at the top of firefox then click on adblock plus preferences there will be a green check mark for the enabled ones if you added the 2 I mentioned you are good to go.

Since turning on EasyList Subscriptions and restarting everything I have not seen any of the problems that were the occasion for the OP.

that is great news albert glad you were able to get good results.

the subscriptions do update themselves automatically and you can view that in the preferences area following the instructions DA had given here
"If you want to update your EasyList subscription for ABP: Firefox Tools>ABP Preferences>right click on Filter Subscription EasyList>On the appearing drop down menu select Update Subscription Now. The status report will be down two more lines."

there it will tell you when it was last auto updated.

Unfortunately Rick died last year but some great people have taken over his projects and are keeping them updated and doing a good job.

Under Adblock Plus Preferences, I see Easy List. I went back and checked Easy Privacy, but it doesn't show up there.

I do have a red ABP icon near the search box up top right. Shows what has been blocked.

    Sue

yes you can also select to have the red stop sign ABP icon down in your status bar if you prefer, I put mine there and took the one up top away. Just right click on the stop sign and look at options you can check or uncheck where you want them to be located

If you open the adblock plus preferences again and use the scroll bar and go all the way to the bottom you will see some green entries and above them it will say easy privacy whitelist if you scroll on up from there you will see the beginning of the easy privacy list, so that part is toward the bottom.

if you added it from the ricks page and had it add to ABP you should have it, you might shut down firefox and reopen it to see if that makes it show.

I found it! I had scrolled down several times and rolled right over it! So many message boxes have tiny text it is hard to read. I'll check out the ABP icon and see if I want to move it down.

If it weren't for CompHelp and all the excellent helpers here, I would have to give up on all this Computer "stuff."

    Thanks, folks!

The negative thing about including signature images is if they are too big in creation or everyone starts using them to a level where threads become inundated with them members on DUN will struggle in viewing the threads. This could result in DUN members growing tired of waiting for threads to load and as a result skipping them.

It happened here a few years ago and it was a loss of learning and helping for all members. As anyone can see they are not prevalent anymore.

The inability for a member to turn off images as a viewing preference like many other forums is another short coming here at iVillage.

Odd you would think since the rest of the world has left dial up it would be a lot faster.

    Nope.

Packet transmission on a DUN is still the same as it was. Plus, the rest of the world hasn't quite left yet. Unfortunately there are still a lot of users in areas both urban and rural, particulalry rural, which do not have high speed access.

Sure I could purchase high-speed satellite for $60.00 a month, but why would I want to do that for an hour or less a day. I still work, have outside interests and a life. I have no desire to be tethered to a computer or the Internet. It's just part of my routine.

    Now someday??

Firefox 3.6 was released January 22, 2010. It will probably be offered through the FF upgrade, but if you rather not wait here's a download site below.

I updated something, I think it was adblock plus and my computer has been so screwed up since. I uninstalled and reinstalled FF, I thought that helped but it didn't. So many things don't work right anymore. I did the scans and they found nothing. Today I thought system restore wasn't working but it finally came on after about 10 minutes. I went back as far as it was set to go and I did get my online notification icon back. I've never had this kind of problem with an update before.

I was having a problem with my status bar freezing or hanging when I tried to get in some of the sites I visit. Also our cable company has been doing maintenance in our area so I called them. The tech I talked to the second time said it sounds more like a router problem. I told him I have Linksys, he replied so did he and he sometimes had to unplug and plug it back in, 2 or 3 times a day to work on line. He suggested I disconnect the router for a few days to see if my PC works properly. I did that early this AM and it has been fine so far. I will know more in the morning when I turn the PC on. Since some others had a problem with freezing/hanging on the status bar, this info might help them.

Oh zep, dial-up doesn't work like that :)

    maime-
I doubt AdBlockPlus messed up your computer, or even your browser. If you are having problems, it is likely to be some other change to your computer that has nothing to do with FF add-ons. Also, while re-booting the modem is something that almost everyone has to do occasionally, unplugging the power for 30 seconds will do as much as leaving it off for days.

Kudzu, I think I found my problem, the router. I disconnected it and the PC is responding like it should. Will take a day or two to be sure.
