Removing desktop items

I am a teacher, and for the most part I know my way around a computer...but I had a lovely darlin save an obnoxious picture as a desktop item (not background, I had that locked down.) I can get in and change the background...I can save other photos to the desktop (but it always saves the photo in a different spot and I'm still dealing with the obnoxious photo) Anyone know how to get rid of the desktop item?

Right click then Delete doesn't work???

No the item seems to be embedded on top of the desktop. And I can't seem to duplicate the same action on my 'puter at home so it may have something to do with a NT version of windows versus what we have on our machines at home. Its driving me nuts and I probably should have stayed at work to finish working on the problem (but the room was getting pretty smokey with so much brain activity going on). I'm thinking that the solution probably lies in duplicating the action...naming the file and then doing a search of the c:\windows folder for the file and deleting it there! Cross my fingers!

Ok so if I install the desktop switcher she will have a blank desktop and when she saves stuff to the desktop it won't show up on the desktop but go in the list where the switcher is? Mary

Well for fun I tried ToolTipFixer and got it installed but had to install (.Net Framework 2.0.50272) to do it and it wasn't clear if I was supposed to uninstall v 1.14322 first and that looked like an all day job involving concentration so I left it and now I have both versions of dotnetfx.exe installed (I guess) but I can't find v2.0.50272 anyplace on board then I never could fathom the method of getting ToolTipFixer to start. Something about needing to use Administrative Tools or Services Sumthin or Net Start none of which I could find in any help menu, any tool menu or any any menu or list of services so I cheerfully uninstalled ToolTipFixer and now I can smile again because the little 1/2 hidden popups didn't really bother me aytall in the first place I was just curious thanx for the comeback tho 10-4. :-)

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click once or twice on the CPU tab at the top of the listings: this will show what process is chewing up the most resources (which will probably be the culprit). Also, look at the CPU Usage line at the bottom of Task Manager and see what the % Usage is. Then report back here on what you found out.

I try to stay away from those LED rigs... For one, it is hard to figure out what kind of output you are getting, and how much, etc. For another, most are just the ugly bright purple (which would look pretty funky on a desk!). There is a really simple solution. You can just use ordinary CFL bulbs that you can get at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc. These screw easily (like a normal bulb!) into an ordinary desk lamp, and they give off ordinary (!) light. These are especially good if you just have a few plants. Just make sure you get the right bulbs- 6500K, and 100 watt equivalent (somewhere around 17 real watts). Maybe try right click on picture click properties and at the bottom of the drop down menu see if it's marked read only. If so uncheck that and try again to delete it.

Could it be as simple as clicking the Desktop icon in the Quick launch bar? I cannot test it because I always delete that icon when setting my computes up.

I had a young woman's computer here and she had no icons showing and I was concerned because all her security icons had been placed on the desktop by me when setting her computer up for her. Respecting other people's privacy I never search around a computer I am fixing. But as I installed AdAware I found it was already there, she had not removed the icon or program but by clicking the desktop icon she had placed al the icons underneath and out of view.
