Items in add/remove programs

win xp home, sp3.

I have the following items in add/remove and ask if they are necessary or useful. Is it a good idea to remove them?

windows live sign-in assistant

windows live installer

microsoft silverlight

Also I have:

windows media format 11 runtime

windows media player 11

I understand windows media player 11, but not the format 11 runtime.

I would leave them alone. silverlight is by microsoft it is similar to flash it helps some sites show their content properly. No you do not have to have it but some sites that require it will not work properly with out it. Since you already have it on there I would leave it but that one is up to you.
Windows Live Sign-In Assistant aids in your logging in and signing in to your live accounts whether it be mail, messenger etc.

Right loosing administrative rights to those (2) areas indicates a virus may still be present, even though the pop ups are gone this is common with certain virus what it does is changes the windows registry an places restrictions on these 2 items. Your best bet as suggested is to go to a spyware forum & post a hijack this log, in that log you will more then likely see the 2 (06) entries that confirm the restrictions---no need to reinstall the operating system for this.

Dar, It does sound like a corrupt application after a virus attack. I have only recently started to recommend REVO Uninstaller as I have had time to use it under various conditions. In your situation, if I were attempting to remedy the concern I would download and install REVO. Then I would reboot into Safe Mode using REVO to remove American Greeting application. A fresh reinstall of AG should hopefully resolve the concern. DA

AVG has a removal tool just to remove their programs I would suggest first trying that. This is a link to Corrine's blog where she has listed the various links to removal tools, follow the link for your AVG product. xp pro add/remove list not displaying entire list of programs

not sure how much more descriptive I can be. the smyptoms are stated quite clearly above. the add/remove window opens up, the slider at the right is very small indicating a very long list, but beyond the first 4 or 5 programs in the list it's blank. you can move the slider, or click on the down arrow and the slider moves like there are programs in the list, but NOTHING is visible. very odd. I will follow the links provided above and see what I can see. next tuesday, I will be infront of the computer again, and I will post some screen shots. thanks, John
