hello, the machine is only 3 years old,yes i did destroy all the data on it after i formatted.i still have the larger drive but it won't read it. last night a neighbor gave me a windows 2000 disc and i formatted the drive again and it worked;it saw the full capacity of the drive and is ready to use, however when i try to bring the second drive with 225 + gigs of data on it it will not see it no matter how i switch things around bios won't read it, so i took it out, the drive i have working is set to master and is the only drive in the pc but bios says it is a secondary slave drive but it is on the primary ide channel and set to master!!everything in bios is set to auto detect drives,but as soon as i connect the other drive as a slave drive and reboot, the computer freezes and gets stuck on the post screen and hangs.funny thing is when i take that drive and put it in the hard drive enclosure that converts regular drives to use with usb and plug it into the computer i am on right now and reboot, windows comes up and says : found new hardware,mass storage usb device,your hardware is installed and ready to use,it even gives me a new drive letter,shows the drive as a western digital drive but... when i click on the drive letter it says please insert a disk into drive j....hmmm

Randy, Thanks for your reply...really appreciate your taking the time to do that. I do have Firefox set to clear all private data upon closing the browser, and am glad to hear you have confidence that it does so. I have an older version of Window Washer and it does the job on IE, but it doesn't contain the option to add Firefox. I understand that newer versions do. I hadn't heard of CCleaner, but you have me curious now so I may check it out. Thanks again for your help Hal

Firefox uses a file called history.dat that is kept in your profiles folder to keep the history of webpages visited. I think this file (history.dat) is probably corrupt. It can be deleted and when firefox starts again it will make a new history.dat file. To fix the problem, here's what you need to do. 1. Go to start, run. 2. Copy/Paste the line below into the run box and click ok. %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ 3. A Windows Explorer window should open with a folder with a name consisting of 8 random letters and numbers followed by .default. 4. Double-click on this folder and you should see a whole bunch of files. Highlight the history.dat file. 5. Close Firefox because the file can't be deleted when firefox is open. 6. Right-Click on the history.dat file and select delete. 7. Close the Windows Explorer box. 8. Launch firefox. It should create a new history.dat and start putting/retaining the list of visited sites.
