Having trouble transferring data to new PC

Old PC is Win98SE, new is XPSP2

I am using a 2 gig flash drive, the 80 gig external drive won't work with the 98 even though I did download the required driver. Maybe because it is USB2 and the old comp is USB1?

I used Windows Explorer to drag and drop my files to the flash drive but when I install them on the new computer it says they are all read only files.

These are photos and work documents (Excel and Word) and I can't have them read only, I need to be able to change them.

I don't understand why they are read only?

I don't understand why they are read only but if you right click on the file name and choose properties on the context menu then at the bottom of the 'general' tab you can remove the check mark from the read only box.

Rather than use drag and drop, I always right click and choose 'copy' and have never had files show up as 'read only'. Don't know what difference it should make, but try it that way.

I have an Old Acer Android Tablet (Acer Iconia A500 w/Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich), but it does show up as my Tablet (A500) in Windows 10. I can then access my photos and all other folders and files on the tablet. My Phone is a Windows Phone with Windows 8.1. I have no problems whatsoever connecting with the phone either! I have Windows 10 on my Desktop Computer, 2 Laptops and my Acer Iconia W4-820-2882 Tablet. All my Appointments, Photos, Documents, etc... are shared between them without lifting a finger. Just hooked up the Acer Iconia A1-840FHD w/Android 4.1.2 Kit Kat I purchased for my Grandson for Christmas. I shows up in File Explorer> This PC in Windows 10 just as my phone and all my Tablets do! Yes, I can Access Photos, Files, etc... from this Acer Iconia A1-820FHD Tablet using my Windows 10 Laptop while hooked up with a USB.

Frankly, I found it easier to set up an appointment and have the computer geeks at the Mac store do it for me. When I first got a Mac, my daughter bought me one year's worth of visits and it was worth every penny.

You're right, the two hardware pieces (the phone and the PC) should recognize one another and figure out how to talk. The phone would then appear as an external drive when you open Windows Explorer. Did you try that, do you see another drive under "This PC" after C: and maybe also after a backup sector (D:) ? And then photos are usually in a folder with the name DCIM or a subfolder of DCIM. A bluetooth connection might be tried instead of a USB cord if your PC has bluetooth but that may be too complicated for you to use. Have you looked in the User Manual of the phone for help? Are you using the newest PC you own to try for the connection? Connections and settings in the Android world sometimes differ from one company to another and from one Android version to another. If you don't see the phone listed using Windows Explorer on the PC after trying the above, I'd call your cellular carrier's tech support. I'm sure they can help you. Good luck
