ibm thinkpad ram

i got a 2001 thinkpad i1100, celeron 550mghz from a relative. it has 32mb onboard ram and i have a single 64mb chip for a total of 97mb. i loaded winxp and have no other software installed. no antivirus or anything. it seems to run very slow. the ibm website says it can take a total of 197mb of ram. i found another website that sells 128mb chips for $20. should i try and install that and see if it runs faster? i guess i just like to fool around with stuff.

Xp will not even run decently with less than 512MB of memory.
You might want to upgrade the memory and look into loading a Linux sytem like Ubuntu which is often recommended on here. The Linux systems like Ubuntu are mostly free

I agree that system would really only be good for running one of the linux distros and you can even get some light versions of those. My preferred distro is SimplyMepis7 there is a light version called AntiX. This would be a good opportunity to play with linux. That is what I did and today I rarely use my windows boxes.

If you decide to do that and have not messed with linux before just come on back and hollar out we can give you some help and tips.

Specs say it will take two type 2 cards or one type 3. So it will take one double thickness card. Right now I'm using a 4 port USB hub plugged into the single USB port and I have a wireless network device plugged into the hub. I tried plugging a USB memory stick into the hub but I got error messages. I can plug the memory stick directly into the USB port and it works fine, but not with the hub. I could get a PCMCIA network device and that would free up the USB port for other uses. Or I could get a PCMCIA USB card and plug the NID and another USB device into the card. (thus my other question about USB Stick NIDs) Pooh Bear

Ok Thanks for the tips, so far I ran the CHKDSK /R and it ran all the way and said it fixed some sectors, well now windows will start to load up to the Desktop but no icons show up and there is some black lines in the bottom of the screen.. I tried the blue button but it only gives me 3 options and none are a diagnostic tool. In safe mode it goes to a black screen that says safe mode in the 4 corners... Any suggestions

So it's likely compromised integrity-wise for some reason. I'd wipe the drive (Active KillDisk or equiv) and try again. Does the unit have one or two ram modules? If two, try removing one and installing if the problem occurs again. I have run into this numerous times with mismatched ram.

Bobbie is correct, but only if you will be connecting the old system to the Internet. If so, you should be certain that your system hasd the current versions of Flash and Shockwave installed also. Finally, be certain that the Java is the proper version for the browser intended. DA
