Glass wall panels-not shower doors

I have an old shower in my home that has white glass one piece panels as the walls rather than tile. It appears the glass was applied to the existing wall and has a metal coping on the top. The corners must have a metal coping behind it for waterproofing. It looks very nice and I would like to do another shower wall this way as I wouldn't have to take down the plaster and install cementboard, etc. Everyone I talk to thinks I mean glass shower doors, which is not the case. I am not sure how to refer to this or if such a product is even available. Any feedback or sources appreciated. After 40 some odd years, it is still in perfect condition.

I am contemplating a glass 'shower surround' too..

here are some photos that look really nice. It would easier to maintain than tile, and no grout lines!

There's a thread over on the kitchen forum "glass backsplash" that might be helpful. Actually, the cool glass backsplash picture is pharaoh's who posted right above me! :) I've never seen either in person, but I would think the concept is similar. Maybe you could take pictures of your current shower to your local glass dealer to help them understand?

I know this is an old thread... but just wondering what you ended up with in your shower luckystar22? And why in the world is the US not getting on board with the acrylic wall panels for showers, backspashes, etc. They look so snazzy and easy to clean! Give me some affordable competition for Lustrolite PLEASE!

It shouldn't be. They were able to measure and cut a slightly angled piece to accommodate the sloped ceiling in my steam shower enclosure.

We live in Massachusetts. I'm not sure if code allows shower controls on an exterior wall, but we are concerned about freezing pipes. Also, we don't want to lose inches of space by thickening the exterior wall for shower control insulation. Our shower head is currently in the same location as in my drawing above. We would simply be moving that little wall about 16 inches towards the exterior wall and shaving about 12 inches off the right hand side so we could install a glass panel.

The door hinge to a glass enclosure has to be in the wall for strength and rigidity. The shower should always be entered from the wide side, not the narrow side. The shower controls should be reachable from outside the shower, with the door opened for access. And no shower head should ever point directly at a door. With those restrictions in mind, your bathroom door swings the wrong way if it swings against the shower and not the wall, and it will conflict with the shower door. The shower door should be hinged left against the wall, with the shower head on that back wall as well. The end wall across from the toilet can be pony wall or glass either one.

I would have loved it-I was trying for a long time to get 3-form or glasskote to talk to me but they seemed uninterested in one retail sale out in Oregon. :( Guess Oregon cash isn't the same as anyone else's. I'm insanely jealous of people who could get them to take them seriously.

I contacted Glasskote. Their pricing installed is between $80.to $150. per sq/ft. My tub surround is about 45 sq/ft so at the low end, cost would be $3,600. for that price I can have the tub wall taken down, cement board installed and tiled. Being a traditional home, I think I will take the latter route. I called a few local glaziers but they had no idea what I was talking about.

Doesn't sound like it would be that tough to me: just ask the glass shops for a price on the dimensional glass you need. Should be tempered for safety.

Only tough part would be tracking down hardware to secure it to the wall, since I wouldn't personally trust an adheasive in this context.

I would call it "glass shower wall" or "tempered glass shower surround" or "tub surround."

I wanted glass (w/ grout lines painted on the back, LOL), but didn't really pursue it. Instead, I opted for Swanstone's solid-surfacing tub surround. I got the one-piece effect, both for waterproofing and for cleaning. Mine is applied directly to the plaster. Probably not truly code; maybe code would technically require cement board back there anyway. But I don't much care. "Directly to the plaster" is good enough for me.

Have any of the "Everyone I talk to" people been folks who work at a glass place? I'd say just keep trying until they stop and listen long enough for you to say "wall" or "surround."
