One option would be to run a scan in Safe Mode. If you've picked up an infection, maybe it's causing problems with the scan. You could also disable Trend temporarily, download and install a different antivirus program to see if it can perform the scan. There are many choices available and many of them are free. You didn't say how old the machine is, but you could be seeing the first signs of a hard drive failure. Have you experienced problems running any other programs?

the free ones like AVAST, AVIRA etc also have paid versions they make their money from those and are wonderful in that they also offer a free version to help those who can not afford to pay, the free versions have a bit less on them than the paid versions of course. It benefits everyone when each person can have good updated programs on their pc which is why many of the companies do offer a free version. In pay versions Kaspersky is an excellent choice, it is likely the one I would choose if I used a pay version it or Nod 32. I personally use AVAST free on my windows machines and feel it is an excellent product. The main thing to remember is layered security so along with your fully updated Antivirus you also need good antimalware programs like malwarebytes and superantispyware which are also free which should be updated and run full scans once a week or so. In addition having spywareblaster is another layer that protects you while online and requires no scans just update it weekly and hit the enable all protection button so the shield is green. And of course a firewall, if you have a properly configured router you have a hardware firewall there protecting you but you should have a software one also, vista and windows 7 have a decent one built in. My impressions are based on a limited number of contacts with tech support, but I sense that tech support overseas is harder to communicate with. Part of it is language, part is culture. Overseas tech support seems almost autometronic. They seem to have a script they work from, and if your problem doesn't fit one of their scripts, they can't help. When I asked for help in fixing the problem myself, the only reply he gave me was to ask me to let them take over my computer. And he had no response when I said no. He didn't seem to understand why I refused. And my comment, "There is no way on God's green earth I am giving you access to my computer," didn't resonate with him. This happened on the heels of another tech support call involving my cell phone company. I received an odd e-mail out of the blue from my phone provider that they were going to stop my phone service on a certain date, and when I called, I was told by someone in tech support that they were no longer going to accept payment by PayPal. So I went in to my account to change to another payment method and found myself locked out. I called for help, and they couldn't get into my account. The tech support guy from the phone provider wanted the password for my Paypal account. I refused. And he didn't seem to understand why I would not give it to him. I think someone living in the US would understand this sensitivity on the part of the customer.

I have Malwarebytes on every computer I own and will never be without it (call me Over Cautious). Elmer is right, I shouldn't need Malwarebytes, but I do have it on my computers and do run it about once a week. Malwarebytes has never let me down! I can't say the same for Norton's, had trouble with Norton's not catching a Virus many, many years ago. Norton's has been doing a great job for me the last 10 years or so though! As I stated above, I do run Malwarebytes about once a week (Manually) and it picks up a few Norton's doesn't consider harmful. I trust Malwarebytes! I do use the Free Version. When Downloading the Definitions just be careful not to press Upgrade, always press Update, that is unless you want to purchase Malwarebytes. Again Elmer is right, I believe Cox does offer the Security Suite, w/McAfee, he post about above! Comcast offers Norton's Security Suite for up to 5 Devices (use to be 7 devices) even on the Low End Internet Service at $19.99 a month. Frontier offers F-Secure for their Internet Service (not sure on details for Frontier). Most ISP's don't want their customers getting Viruses and Malware making their internet experience unbearable. They also know how important it is that everyone is running a Reputable Up-to-Date Anti-Virus Program on their Desktop Computer, Laptop, Tablet and Cellular Devices. This is why they are including these as part of your package!
