Do I need both a fixed shower head and a hand spray???

Why would I? I'm remodeling a small bath...approximately 5x9 feet. I'm going to have a shower only, no tub, with a seat at the end of the shower. Shower will be around 36" wide by 60" long. All faucets and controls will be on the 36" wide section. I have ordered a hand held shower head mounted on the pole thing. Also, two body sprays, one diverter and the on/off control panel thing. Does anyone have the hand held shower unit only, and regret that you did not get a separate wall mounted shower head? Why would you need both? I don't want to wake up out of my remodel overload induced coma and think, "I could have had a V8.", oh, I mean, "I should have gotten a fixed shower head, dummy!"

Seems like I remember a thread about this awhile back (when I didn't give a hoot cause I was in kitchen remodel hell, ha!), but my search abilities on this group in trying to locate it are not too good.

Yes, this was discussed recently. I was one who said that I have been happy with handheld on wall bar alone. Never missed having a fixed shower head.

Wait, I found the other thread. Thanks, astridh, for your comment. Seems like most people feel the hand held on the pole is fine. I just don't think I have room for both. Think it might look stupid. Thanks again.

Look up Hansgrohe Universal ibox - first of all, you will get a thermostatic valve instead of a pressure balance valve, thermostatic doesn't impact the GPM (gallons per minute) that the pressure balance does. Here is some hansgrohe info. and only will require you to have trim for this universal box - no additional trim needed. There are various options for configuration but I'm looking on page 16 of the "installation instructions" part No 90111601 and I'm reading "modify the diverter to allow simultaneous use of both functions". This came with my Hansgrohe trim - part number 04231xx0. I'm obviously a bit of a newbie but hopefully this info helps you understand that what you want can be done. I would go with hansgrohe for any shower fixture because their fixtures are famous for minimizing any restriction on the flow. You of course always want the option of having the maximum flow. Good luck. Hopefullly the experts will kick in here with more/better details if you need it. I bought my universal Ibox from a plumbing showroom and the salesman was helpful in explaining my options and what I could have done. Not much more expensive than buying on line. I used a single thermostatic valve made by California Faucets that has a large temperature control in the center of the bezel, flanked by two smaller levers for water volume control, which allow the two showerheads to be used together or alone in any proportion, with all three levers contained in one valve unit. They're available with round or rectangular metal backplates, in several colors/finishes, with numorous style choices for the knobs and levers. Like it a whole lot.

I hate the feel of hair on my body -- gives me duck bumps! -- so I wash my hair in my extra large MBR sink. I *could* easily wash it using the hand-held Grohe that can be positioned 'wherever' on its vertical pole. There's *plenty* of water pressure through this. The house is 14 now; no slipping, sliding, or other problems with the hand-held. (We had an old Speakman head in our condo until recent remodeling. Minimal difference.) OT: One of my favorite things in this house is the recirculator on the hot water line. This provides hot water in seconds at every hot water tap in the house. Now that I think of it, even with that fast delivery, I push the hand-held shower spray away from me for those few seconds and flip it back when the water is hot. We should start a thread on how long you spend IN the shower, after all the debate about the water delivery system!

We are about to do the same thing and even doing the same size shower. We are putting the fixed head, controls, and body sprays on the 36" side and then mounting by the bench, which is at the opposite end of the shower, a handheld for shaving legs, cleaning etc. Just another idea.

We're using both in our tub/shower combo. I'm 5' and DH is 6'4. The fixed head will be high for him and the bar/handheld lower for me. He rarely uses this bathroom, but as we have discovered, you're rarely sorry if you do add the extra, but you might be sorry if you don't. We didn't put a shower over this tub when we built the house and have regretted it ever since. We're trying to get in everything we might need in this remodel.

Thanks everyone! Wellllll, ging9, we would probably do the same as you, but at the end where the bench will be is a window...of all things. It's kinda crazy but we want to keep it. It is not an exterior window now, but it once was. It now looks out over a stairwell and beyond that are windows that look out to the lake. You can literally be taking a shower and see the lake! I am concernced about the body sprays blasting all the way to the window, but hubby said he would figure that out. So, in my case, all controls would have to be on the same end. That's why I think the hand held spray on the pole is all I should probably get along with the body sprays cause I've never had them and can't resist. Everyone else agree? Thanks.

I think I would rather take the view of the lake than another showerhead. I do have a handheld with bar in the kids/guest bath with no fixed head and love it. No regrets about not having both. I know you are making the right decision. As far as the body sprays, I am with you. I am doing it since whe have no tub in the master and think this will make it more appealing in resale to have the sprays although I have never had them before. I guess if you can't beat em join em. Good Luck
