Thanks Owbist. I have Norton 2007 and below are what I assume were installed, according to Belarc. I keep the definitions up to date- I'm not sure it is done automatically like it was with Norton 2004. It seems to check incoming email because once in a while a notice will let me know that something was deleted because it had a virus. A full scan is done once a week and I occasionally scan individual things that might be suspect. So far, the weekly scan has caught a tracking cookie or two. I also use ad-aware. I will do the online scans and see what they come up with. One thing I don't understand is why the files showed up in the recycle bin in the first place. Something must have told them to go there. After I do some investigating, I will let you know what happens. Thanks, again. Chris... Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer Once found, right click and send as a shortcut to your desktop. Then, click on Windows Explorer. Once the window opens, go to Tools>Folder Options>View and select "Show Hidden Files". Close. Now look at the left pane of the window. Locate My Computer>C>Documents & Settings. Open and locate the name you use when logging into Windows when it starts. In this folder, you will find "Cookies". Find the folder (within the log-in name folder) called 'Local Settings'. Within this folder you will find Temporary Internet Files and History. Hope this helps... txKen

XP is windows_NT confusing huh,,, but down at the bottom it probably says something like %windir% c:\windows and there should be a PATH statement and at least one item in the string says 'c\windows' .. and there should not be a C:\winnt If you're familiar with using the cmd window... maybe just type in the following.. and copy paste the results here.. echo %path% ~~ One thing I might try is from control panel, add/remove , uninstall JAVA Then go and delete the Sun folder,, mine is at ... C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Sun Followed of course by a reboot before going to www.java.com and installing java fresh.
