Vista...Where is the 'Cookies' file or folder

Hi,

I am trying to help my sister locate her Cookies folder in Vista. She wants to delete cookies and browsing history. How can I direct her. What is the path? Thanks.

Finding the Folders in Vista apparently is not as automatice as one would think.

A simple Google using the words "Vista cookie location" (sans quotes)produced the link below.

If a user is just editing the folders then this would be the access, but if the user is emptying the folders why not just the use the Internet Options located on the toolbar?

Go to "Control Panel" "Security" "Internet Options", the "General" tab to delete cookies and history.

Thanks Owbist. I have Norton 2007 and below are what I assume were installed, according to Belarc. I keep the definitions up to date- I'm not sure it is done automatically like it was with Norton 2004. It seems to check incoming email because once in a while a notice will let me know that something was deleted because it had a virus. A full scan is done once a week and I occasionally scan individual things that might be suspect. So far, the weekly scan has caught a tracking cookie or two. I also use ad-aware. I will do the online scans and see what they come up with. One thing I don't understand is why the files showed up in the recycle bin in the first place. Something must have told them to go there. After I do some investigating, I will let you know what happens. Thanks, again. The Enigmatic Cookies Folder In Windows Vista, & Windows 7. Chris... Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer Once found, right click and send as a shortcut to your desktop. Then, click on Windows Explorer. Once the window opens, go to Tools>Folder Options>View and select "Show Hidden Files". Close. Now look at the left pane of the window. Locate My Computer>C>Documents & Settings. Open and locate the name you use when logging into Windows when it starts. In this folder, you will find "Cookies". Find the folder (within the log-in name folder) called 'Local Settings'. Within this folder you will find Temporary Internet Files and History. Hope this helps... txKen

If computer works ok otherwise, I would open my computer, right click the main drive, C? ... choose properties. Use Disk Cleanup there. also System cleanup is there and will remove all but your last Restore point but clean up some other files too. Restore points often will screw up when the master boot record or partition tables get changed or messed up, which happens with use something other than windows like PartionMagic to make or resize a partition. Or hard drive failing. After saying/thinking, I would also run a diskcheck from the same C drive properties/system tools. Maybe do that first.

Or Start/All programs/Accessories/System tools/Disk cleanup

Of course that clears all cookies including your favourite spots like here causing you to have to log in next visit.

She couldn't go to the toolbars for internet options, because the only thing on her google page is favorites. Thanks anyway.

Glad it worked for you. By going to that same location, and choosing "Settings", then "View Files", you can see what is in your Temporary Folder.

Sorry for any confusion I might have created. You asked where the Cookie folder was in Vista. I answered that question.

Since it was actually a question of IE7 all the suggestions shared in this thread are viable answers.

I use the CCleaner on vista.
It keeps the cookies I want,
Browser Blocks all cookies except session cookies and I manually allow a couple of required ones, and the login type cookies for places like here - then tell CCleaner not to delete that neccessary handful.
