Missing WINNT directory/file

My one year old Dell Dimension computer is missing C:\Winnt\System32\Macromed\Flash\.... directory/file, which prevents me from opening YouTube videos. I do have C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\.... Can I create C:\Winnt and then copy into it the System32, etc.? or will this get me in trouble? Any other way to resolve the problem? Thanks in advance, Shel

Remove Flash player and then install current version.
Don't mess with Winnt.
Mikie gave the links at the post below.

Here is a link that might be useful: Flash Player help

I followed the directions and successfully downloaded version 9 of Flash Player, but it found its way to the C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\ spot; and YouTube still will not play. I'd appreciate any further suggestions. Sheld

You have some serious Trojan Virus problems. I don't know how you got a HJT log if the computer keeps restarting. I see you just joined, so let me say welcome!! Just so you know, Service Pack 2 or SP2 is available. Service packs increase the safety of your system. Also Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) is out of date. HELP! I deleted files under win 98
Q
Comments (20)
If you can get Windows98 to start in the "safe" mode (pressing the F8 key as mentioned above), open the "recycle bin and look to see if the deleted files are there. They should be if these have not been removed from the recycle bin. If the files are there, merely highlight the file and click on "restore". This will put the file back from whence it came unless you have deleted certain part of the operating system. However, if you deleted files using the old DOS commands, I'm not sure what happens. They may be gone. In any event, you could re-install Windows. I've had to to do that a few times back when I had Win98 SE. Before reinstalling, copy down all of your browser settings. You may loose these on an re-install. It doesn't happen every time, but it is a good practice just in case. I'm not sure what happens to the Windows updates upon a re-install. If you are lucky, Windows will recognize the update copies on the drive and install these. If this does not happen, the next time you go in-line, the Windows updater may begin, or ask to begin downloading a bunch of updates, and this can be a lengthy process over a 'dail-up' connection. Of course, you are aware that MicroSoft stopped supporting Window98 and there will be no new updates save the ones already available. If your equipment is suitable for Windows XP, I recommend moving up to that operating system. It's much better that Win98. One caution, however: Make sure that you have plenty of disk space be you begin the upgrade. A big mess is created if XP fails to finish loading due to not enough disk space. Read the requirements carefully. Upgrading to XP requires a huge temporary file during the upgrade, much larger than one might imagine. Also, a large amount of space is neded to store the old system if the option to retain 'retore old system' is chosen. If your disks are formatted for FAT 16 bit, convert up to at least 32 bit FAT. BUT WAIT! If you need to run old DOS programs, find out how to set this up under XP before you convert. That may be more trouble than its worth. It would be best if you could move away from these if possible. I've had no problem with older software written for Win95/98 when run under XP. I do have an expensive old DOS based finite element analysis program that I can no longer run with XP. If I find that I really need to run this program (for consulting purposes), I'll refresh an old computer and install Win98 SE and this program on it.

Sounds like your computer is telling the U-Tube server that it is something other than windows xp. Perhaps it thinks you are running Windows2000 , Do you have any idea why that might be ?

Might delete your cookie for youtube or all cookies. Might be a virus got ya.

YouTube works fine for me and I am on normal XP home with no win2000 Winnt folder. XP home winnt folder is named Windows.

You might look into your enviormental variables to see what it calls your windows folder. Right click MyComputer, select properties, then the Advanced tab.

Mikie,
The system variable in the environmental variables says the OS is Windows_NT. Where might I go from here? Can I hire you, or someone/someplace you recommend, to walk me through the next steps on the phone? sdgrandnospam@adelphia.net (delete nospam)

XP is windows_NT confusing huh,,, but down at the bottom it probably says something like
%windir% c:\windows

and there should be a PATH statement and at least one item in the string says 'c\windows' .. and there should not be a C:\winnt

If you're familiar with using the cmd window... maybe just type in the following.. and copy paste the results here..
echo %path%
~~
One thing I might try is from control panel, add/remove , uninstall JAVA
Then go and delete the Sun folder,, mine is at ...
C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Sun

Followed of course by a reboot before going to www.java.com and installing java fresh.

Ouch! I hope the fee was minuscule.Sometimes I feel that kind of advice could have been given at the initial meeting for free. That in turn would earn 'brownie points' so you would have that warm fuzzy feeling about going back for more help in the future.
