I would go with the air card. Even though you're not traveling now, you may at some point in the future.

Satellite service can also suffer from lag time due to the distance to the satellite. I looked into it years ago, but the lag time made it incompatible with my employers VPN.

If you're asking whether the aircard will include an email account, that would depend on the provider. I wouldn't worry about that too much, since there are so many free email services available. If you're asking whether you can use the aircard to check email from various providers, the answer is yes. I check multiple email accounts with an aircard.

I have had both satellite service and now an air card. Both have drawbacks. I was satisfied, for the most part, with the satellite service, but decided to change when cellular wireless service by Verizon became available in my area. Both will have a cap on usage, with all the air cards at 5GB per month. If you use lots of bandwidth, the satellite might be better for you since you can subscribe to several different packages with different caps. I found that things slow down a bit in the evenings with both services when lots of people are home from work and hitting the Internet highway. Unfortunately, with more and more people using smartphones for data service and air cards likewise, the slowdown may get worse. The pipeline can deliver only so much.

So, if the initial cost is the same for you, I'd call it a tossup. By the way, if you have more than one computer in your household, both systems can be networked just as DSL or cable. Either is much faster than dialup.

personally I would go with an air card, I have one for my netbook so I can use it when traveling, it gives you that option should you ever need it which satellite does not. Satellite can be affected by weather such as heavy rain, clouds and sun storms. I have direct tv for tv and do experience outages at times for those reasons. I would make very sure you have good 3G coverage in your area though before going with the air card, do you have good verizon cell phone coverage now? You can look at their maps but they are not that reliable, I would definitely make sure you have at least a 30 day period in which you can return it and cancel the contract and not pay anything should you run into a problem with it like not being able to get good coverage in your area. The 5 gig cap never was a problem for me because if I had something big to download I would just plug into my cable to get it so it did not affect my aircard usage, you will not have that option of course so the cap may affect you more.
I was told I would get the air card it self free after I paid $99, they would refund it to me in a rebate, I never ever got the rebate which really makes me mad, had I known that I would not have got it. The monthly fee of around $60 to me is way too high compared to other online costs.
But when it is the only option people will pay it.
However I did hear of a new one available that uses the same 3 G networks and cost much less recently, it is called DataJack cost $40 a month and has an unlimited usage rather than the 5 gig cap and says it has National coverage and no contracts which is awesome.

with any of the air cards you can do exactly the same things you do with dial up or dsl or any other method so if you want to check email yes you can do that, I was not given an email address with it but I use webmail, hotmail and gmail so no need for another email.

on the DataJack site there is a page you can put your zipcode in and it will tell you the type of coverage you will get there.
National 3G Coverage

The data cap on most aircards is a good point. I didn't think of that because I use mine as a backup and when I'm traveling.

That Data Jack looks intriguing. I wish they had an actual map so I could see coverage at a glance instead of needing to type in zip codes for every place I might use it (not an issue for the OP, but it is for me).

I might have to consider them since the monthly savings would quickly pay for the device.

I bet they probably do have a map if you contact them and ask, it would definitely be easier for those using it for travel to have a map or list of locations at least.
A few on another forum I am on have it and are pleased with it so far, it is pretty new. I checked zipcodes for family I have that live in very rural areas of Louisiana and it showed very good coverage which is surprising.
