removing temporary files by using search

I wondered what the general consensus is about using the search files to remove *tmp files. Are there files that could be removed that could cause problems or is it a safe way to remove the ones that are missed by going through internet options.

Also I have read that there is another way by typing in search, *.tmp,*.chk,~*.*

whats your opinion of this? and is it necessary?

About every now and then after a reboot, I run a program that basically just searches the drive for various tmp files...

I just stumbled onto it somewhere and it was Vista Certified which is a good credential.

My usual slow-to-warm-up self says that this is impractical for a pool of any significant size unless you have mucho $$ and an identified storage site, and that you have actually identified that the pool does not work well for your family's use of your property, but nontheless, it is reasonable to try to research the options. That may either get you to the product you desire or help you come up with a whole 'nother way to approach your living situation. There are some commercial products for this purpose advertised on the 'net. Dimensions are likely an issue--as in the above post, it would take different support structures and materials to span a large pool vs. something smaller. Also, have you focused on whether it is for repeated off-season uses, thereby requiring movability and "storage", or whether you wanted to keep your pool completely fallow for several consecutive years and then rev it up and dispose of the cover structure? That affects the design and $ issues. I say "storage" because one unique product I saw was a gazebo designed to slide over pool and then off to the side and be usable there. Whereas, if you have no other yard to speak of, then you have a different issue. There are also some previous GW threads on this issue.

That's one option, but there are others. There are permanent solutions that involve you digging and getting dirty, muddy and probably wet. You also might not have to cut concrete, but you would have to fashion a jet lance with a 12 or 14' long piece of 1/2" piece of copper or galvanized pipe and a garden hose. However, the easiest solution, which I think is what your are asking for, is to buy a book or two on drip irritation systems from ebay, Half-Price Books, Lowes or Home Depot. I bought two off of ebay and one from Half-price Books. The one I bought from Half-price books is by Ortho and is the one I used to put in a drip system around my house. It's a simple book and easy to read, follow and understand. I dug a small, shallow trench for my 1/2" supply line and an even shallower trench for the 1/4" line from the supply line to each plant, or you could simply bury the lines under mulch. There is a female hose connector that attaches to the 1/2" supply line, and you just screw your male hose in into it and turn the water on. However, your garden hose would be laid across the concrete, but you would only need to unroll enough hose to go up the retaining wall and connect to the 1/2" main drip line, that you might want to place at the top of the retaining wall close to the edge. Right now our local Walmarts have their drip irrigation kits on sale. The kits include everything you need to set up a drip irrigation system, but no timer. You'd have to buy the timer separate. There is a manual time for about $10, and a battery powered one for about $20. These packages are cheap and probably not what you would find in a professional landscaping supply store, but they are easy to install and I haven't had a problem yet. Walmart has 3 kits: one is for a small container garden, one is for a small regular garden, and a larger kit is for a medium sized yard. These kits include the filter, pressure reducer, connectors, dripline (1/2" and 1/4")and emmitters. GOOD LUCK!!

Hmm, I just found out the way to find out where the files that Secunia is updating are located. If you right click on the program in Secunia, and then click on 'show details', it shows the location and you can double click on it. The Symantec location led me to a folder called Shared Symantec (which I did not see directly under Program Files, but it was under Common Files under Program Files). I deleted the whole folder. Hopefully it doesn't contain any files that I need seeing as it was 'shared'. I'll leave it in my recycling bin for awhile. Also I double-clicked the AVG location in Secunia, and deleted ALOT of AVG files. I guess I should have played around more, but sort of gave up when I didn't see anything under Program Files. Thanks for your help.

Not always. C:\Temp and C:\Windows\Temp are often used for temporary files used by programs that are running. C:\Temp is a holdover from DOS/Win 3.x days and it's unlikely to find a program still using this folder. "Well behaved programs" clean up after themselves and delete their temporary files from the temporary directory. If a program crashes (even a well behaved one) it will leave files in the temp directory. Some programs are like those coworkers who use the microwave and don't wipe it out afterward--they don't bother cleaning up after themselves. At any rate, you end up with a mixture of abandoned files in the temp directory. You can usually delete any that are from before your last reboot, but you can't just delete everything, because some of the files may still be in use, even if they aren't currently open and stopping you from deleting them. Deleting a file that is still needed by a program would be unfortunate.

There is always the possibility that deleting 'temp' files may cause problems. When I used the (*.tmp,*.chk,~*.* ) option it deleted an 'hp.tmp' file that my Hewlett Packard All-in-One Printer needed to function properly. I had to use my 'HP' disc to reinstall the file because I had emptied my 'Recycle bin' before I realized that I needed the file. This procedure does a nice job of deleting temp files, but as stated at the bottom of the page, Deleting Temp Files 101,---------- "just leave the files in your Recycle Bin for a few days until you are sure everything is ok, then you can empty your Recycle Bin".
I have found that just using the Windows 'Disk Cleanup' utility does an adequate job of cleaning up the files that absolutely need to be cleaned up.
Then of course, I don't move the rugs or furniture when I vacuum either, so delete accordingly. :-()>

I have to agree with Witz here. Trditionally the removal of temp files will cause no concern in system operations, save active functions being performed. However, if a user goes too deep into the O/S files a risk of removing a common file is possible.

I continue to recommend CCleaner at its default settings as an adequate flotsam removal utility for even a newbie. I find it superior to Disk Cleanup.

I tried the link that mikie posted and it seemed to work pretty good. 500 files. The only thing I do notice is that when i close a page it hestitates, so its possible that I deleted something that I needed. I left them in my trash for 2 days, but I didnt connect the dots until now.

Ive done the deleting files 101, thats why I was asking about it. I wasnt really sure about it.

After installing CCleaner there is an option menu which besides the default settings allows a user to add two "System" Targets and an "Advance" category to expand the depth of its ability to clean. Unless a user is quite confident in making any or all of these changes, they should be left alone.

I have only heard of users developing a concern when these settings are added.

Another thumbs up for Ccleaner used at default settings. Nice little freebie but be sure to remove the check mark for installing the Google toolbar - unless you want it of course

Owbist you are absolutely right in the Google toolbar recommendation. It is appearing to me more and more that we as users must be vigilant of the "offered" add-ons that accompnay our "free" downloads.
