While answering Betty's question on storage space, I mentioned that I just bought this cabinet, and Kathleen asked to see pics...

For those who are wondering what I mean...

I wanted another cabinet for storage in my DR. The area I had in mind, was between two windows and only 35" wide.

DH wanted to make it for me..I wanted it NOW. :)

So that lead us to the 'Wood Bin', which is an unfinshed furniture store. While I'm thinking small cabinet..DH spotted this Hutch. The size was perfect 30x72. We paid $238 tax included!

I had him paint it Black, destress it and use a stain on the destressed areas. It came out beautiful, and looks like an old Antique cupboard. What do you think?

With the cabinet... (still drying) *Betty...they have one like this, that is Totally closed...lots of storage!!

It has nice beadboard backing, which is a nice detail.

Storage....

Fits in beautifully...and is still a few inches from the wall..while it drys.

So, Betty...this could be a 'quick fix' solution to some added storage. There are so many types of unfinished cabinets, etc. Also, you don't have to be a 'Cabinet Maker' either ...lol

So you are spoiled rotten. So happy that you got your way and it couldn't be a more perfect match with your dining set. They are stunning together. Guess it only goes to show that a woman knows what she wants.lol I have 4 china cabinets and no more room so I have always gotten my way too.

Now back to Betty. I think something like this would work great for more storage if you have the room, Betty. Hope you can figure it out cuz it's tough to have limited space when you love dishes.

Where do you have them all and how large are they?
That must be nice to store different things in each one.

I sold my original DR table & Chairs to make room for my mother's set. DH and I sanded it down, painted the chairs and table legs and refinished the top. I got fabric online and recovered the chairs. My original hutch (I stil have), is Cherry wood - it's Shaker Style and fits well with it..as does this new simple hutch.

I agree, if Betty has the room, she could get an unfinished piece any style,with much more storage space, and just paint or stain it. There's so many different types of storage cabinets. But then again, you need the space to add it!!

Thank you ALL for the suggestions. I will try to finish this post before my service stops. It does every time it rains hard. Melvalena, I think I would have given up if I had to go to a storage building. I'm too lazy and too far out in the country for that. I don't have a coat closet. I did switch to a regular bed from a waterbed when DH came home from the hospital after getting hurt last year. Under it is packed full of plastic bins already. Son, took the waterbed and already has the drawers full of his stuff. His closet is packed, DH's aunt's closet is full of her stuff. The 2 china cabinets, buffet, and washstand are all full. Can't even get to the washstand doors because it is in a nook behind the sofa and the whole 3-4' space between the sofa and the wall is packed almost to the top of the sofa back with bins and bags of the latest "finds". Magpie, I LOVE the decorative boxes. I will add them to my shopping list. At least that will get all of my napkin rings,s/p shakers,placecard holders,etc,together. I bought bins after Christmas and tried to make an (on paper) list of what I put in each bin and numbered the bins accordingly. But, I'm out of space for bins. I have things on top of my kitchen cabinets now and I'm getting too old and unsteady to keep climbimg up and down to dust them. I have to stand in a chair and then step up on the counter to reach them (SCARY). So I don't think I will do the over the window shelves, even though it's a great idea for someone younger. Yacht, I like the lift-top bench idea. There is a tiny space under the windows in the den/sunroom that DH could install a short one. No room for cedar chests. I will be measuring all closets to see if we could sneak an extra shelf in. Our MB closet top shelf is used for luggage,quilts,sheets,etc since we have no linen closet. I already use behind the door for the Halloween bins. Jane, I saw the pics of your new hutch. LOVE it! I will be checking the unfinished furniture store. You can't buy the lumber to build one for the great price you got the hutch for! If I can EVER find other space for all the stuff behind my sofa, I could fit a short/shallow chest there and still have access to the buffet and washstand. Lee, I love your name. Lee is a family name and just about all of the Gkids have it for their middle name. I love your trashcan idea with the extra security of the tarp and bungee cords. As soon as DH puts up the carport he just got moved from the old place and closes it in I may be sharing the little shed he is using now with DS. It has a leak somewhere, but if the trashcan is totally enclosed (and covered with the tarp), it may still work. When DH gets all of the junk out we may find the leak. LOL And I'm sure I can whine until he lets me share some of the space in his new "Garage"! I have one of those decorator tables on DH's side of the bed. I'll start putting stuff under there NOW! Kathleen, There is one section in our kitchen that a cabinet will fit. Even though DH is a beginner carpenter, he has promised to build me a floor to ceiling cabinet for that space. I asked for it as a Christmas present so I can get it soon. I have the "I WANT IT NOW" problem too! If we can stop hitting deer we may have the extra $$s for lumber. I hit another one coming home from church last night. At least the radiator leaked slowly enough that I got home before it overheated. :o( Karen, I may try the computer list, but y'all don't realize how computer challenged I still am! Oh, this is fun to get to see all the pretty stacked plates on one post, will be so nice to have them in the albums. I have no idea why all but one of my pics won't allow us to click to enlarge them, I posted them the same way I always do. Maybe Photobucket has changed something, who knows. Tam, I was glad to see you using your stacked silver tray since I just got one of those. Your arrangements are really nice on it. I just saw white and red birds at Dollar Tree, think I'd better go back and get a few, I like your's on the plates. Dreamgoddess, love all your pretty pink ornies on yours. DD, I too love your bird perched on the top of yours, and using the napkins was a good way to make them just right for Halloween. jrzgurl, Both of your's look really nice. I really love that black, white, silver theme. Betty, all your items look so pretty and cheerful with that little scarecrow on top. Kathleen, I'd love to have your stacked plates with all those yummy goodies at my house right now! I'd be happy to "clean them up" for you. ;o) Karen, this is turning into a really fun post. Luckygal...gee I thought I had posted a reply to you.. must have been in my sleep...lol Anyway..thank you so much. I'm really so surprised over all the wonderful compliments on this. I actually feel, that because Everyone saw the 'Before and After'..they are just amazed by the end results. I've refinished many pieces of furniture over the years, mainly b/c of lack of money...but then actually enjoyed the older pieces more than the new, because they had 'character'. With this piece...I guess I like it cause it's All Wood, and with the way we refinished it, gave it character too! All the fru fru I had, and I just 'stuck' it in! lol mag... like your DH, mine was very adamant on building one..but after doing some research on unfinished pieces..I convinced him to 'look'. There was a pretty big place not to far from us, and the selections were amazing. Slowly DH saw that some of the pieces, he couldn't build for the money. He actually spotted this piece, and the rest is 'History' !! Although, he did want to add top moulding and bun feet to the bottom...I convinced him I liked it just the way it was. There are many places online that have great selections, and now that the holidays are coming, do great sales, and ship free!! I used to scope the sites out, to see the different styles that they had, to get ideas for DH to build. So, you might just find the right piece at the right price too! Don't sell yourself short, I'm sure, with all the lovely things you have, you will be able to put it together just beautifully. Dom..Thank you......wow, you're just about 'Stripping Away' my DR..lol If I should redecorate, I'll keep you in mind.. but then you'll have to stand in line, behind my DD and my Nieces! lol I'm glad you too were in on the Before and After and appreciate the end results. You just described me while telling me about yourself.LOL I only get what I want! My four cabinets are in my dining room. If you go back and take a look at my halloween decorations you can see them. The post is on Sept. 27th. I think.

Did you build your own home? Sounds like you are great at refinishing furniture and that's alot of work. Your hutch lookds like a professional finish. What kind of paint did you use on it?

I started to paint a desk with purple roses on it last spring and haven't gotten back to it since my company left. I picked up a little stand that matches and a friend gave me an old chair to go with but I haven't tackled that either.

I did get another rose tray painted today and I painted a witch yesterday. Don't know why I am putting off finishing the desk.

Wow oh Wow Punk!! I went back to your post and took a better look...and YES, you've got 4 Hutches!! They're fabulous and looks like you've got LOTS of beautiful 'stuff' in them. Now, come on and tell me you can't put together a little tablescape..even if you do a little vignette table setting for 1.
Looks like you've got lots of accessories too. I'd love to see you do one.
Yep..we built our new home...
After we totally renovated an old house. An original 'This Old House' ! As much as I love this place, I'm really missing that one. Lots of transformation and Lots of great times and memories there.
I've refinished lots of furniture over the years..mainly b/c I didn't have much money left over from all the renovating jobs. lol After awhile, I only liked old pieces of furniture..they seemed to be of better quality and had lots of Character in them. The paint that we used on this piece was from Home Depot..Behr, Semi-Gloss Black. It was a primer and finish all in one. Before painting it...DH & I distressed it (lots of hammering and ice picking). Then after painting it..sanded it with 80 grit sandpaper, on edges and corners for 'wear and tear'...Then hand rubbed cherry stain over the sanded areas. Not everyone has the patience for this..you really have to love doing it. Like your love for your rose trays and all the other beautiful things you make. It's also therapeutic...right?
As far as your desk...you've got to do it when you have real 'Fresh Head'. Make it a 'first project' job of the day, and not feel rushed. Even if you do a little at a time..you'll find it's worth it. Also, you seem to appreciate those pieces more, because of how your transformed it.
Of course...show Pictures....lots of em!!

WOW Jane! You really nailed the finish to have it match your Mom's set so perfectly. It was made for that space, too.

I will be checking at the unfinished furniture store in town the next time I'm that way. I have a space I could fit one that size. If it has doors the stray toy flying through the air (gkids) won't hurt whatever is inside!!

As I said in the other post, DH is going to make me a floor to ceiling cabinet for the one spot I have in the kitchen. We will paint it white to match the cabinets. He keeps saying I may not like it because he isn't a pro and will probably make lots of mistakes on this 1st one.

If it is floor to ceiling, has shelves and doors, and is white, I will love it. I won't let him build it in so if we ever move I can take it with me. I soooo treasure the 1st birdhouse he made me when we were newlyweds.

He has wanted to build it for so long, but everytime he sets the money aside for lumber something more pressing comes up. LIKE THE DEER I HIT LAST NIGHT!! That is going to require at least a new radiator. But,the cabinet is at the top of my Christmas wish list, so he will do everything in his power to see I get it. I can't ask for anything more.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I will show them to DH.

Golly! Punk, I went back and looked at your Halloween decs and I found that I hadn't posted a comment. Sorry!

A lot of times now I look late at night. I'm in bed right beside DH and don't have any lights on so I won't disturb him. It is hard to see the keyboard in the light of the computer screen. But, gosh! Not only the 4 hutches and all those dishes, but the decorations are awesome. I want that ghost. Give it up, Girl!!

Great job! I'm with Jane. I want to see tablescapes! NOW!! LOL

Betty.. I think when your DH makes that Floor to Ceiling cabinet you should be able to store quite a bit of stuff.
That sounds ideal and a great idea, to make it to take it, should you leave. That's a nice present to look forward to.
I'm sorry to hear about your car, and the Deer. Good thing you didn't get hurt...As expensive a radiater can be, fortunately, it can be replaced... not you.

Karen/Gail..Glad you like the 'Old/Antique' look.
You both reminded me of DH's Italian DGma. Many years ago, when DH & I bought our 'Old, Old House'.. she came over and didn't say a word..but kept looking and looking at our old refinished tables and chairs, old Oil Lamps and collectables. She turned to us and in Broken English, Said ' Why Do You Want To Live In This Old House, With All This Old Stuff?' We told her we liked old houses, and we liked taking old things, and redoing them. She wrinkled her nose and shook her head and said ' I grew up with this Old Stuff and I didn't like it then and I still don't like it now! You should be enjoying New Things, you're not poor!! She really had a hard time accepting that we actually spent money for old things, because we liked them!

Mo, I keep mulling around as to what I will put in the open shelves. Dishes or Pewter... or a combo. I guess it will evolve as I go.

Your cabinet turned out wonderful and couldn't be better for that space and to go with your lovely table and chairs. I can tell you put allot of talent and love into everything in your home--it really shows and is all so very nice.

Jane, love what you and your DH did with that cabinet, it turned out great and fits in your space wonderfully. I wish I my computer wasn't acting up as I can't download my pics right now and show you the wonderful transformation my DH did on a similar cabinet/bookcase for my new office. He painted it black, put crown moulding on the top and took out a shelf so I could have a small flat screen TV in it. I am realy happy with it! Can't wait to see how you decorate the open shelving on yours!

Thank you both. Glad you like the way the cabinet turned out. This project turned out faster than expected. Painting is such a quicker method than the several steps in staining and varnishing. I'm so glad it's finished, and ready for much needed extra storage.

DD..I'd love to see your cabinet when your able to post.
I'm looking forward to it. Sounds like DH put some nice 'custom' touches to it. Your office must be such a pleasure to be in...your own TV too, what a nice 'hide-a-way'!

Oh wow, I'm just getting back to this post and you hit a deer and are you alright??? Sorry I didn't see this sooner and would of made sure you are ok instead of wanting to boogie with you over receiving your pumpkin bowls in my other post.

Now Betty, just becuz Jane bought you bowls doesn't mean I have to give you GD's ghost.LOL We bought GD that years ago and she always wants us to keep it here. Thanks for all your comments.

I will try a tablescape someday but I don't have what it takes yet. I'm going to keep looking at all of yours and maybe I'll get it.haha There won't be any food to start with unless my DB is here to help. You ladies are a hard act to follow you know!

Jane, it's beautiful!!!! It's perfect in your gorgeous dining room, too. I love y how you finished the inside with the cherry stain instead of painting it black. Nice touch! How wonderful that you found such a narrow one that still has a lot of good storage and display space. I can't wait to see it once you've added all your pretty things to it. When you take those pics, be sure to take some more pics of the rest of your dining room, too, will you? It is so pretty!
