Anna, sometimes the mother tuber will go on to grow, but the idea seems to be that it is nearly 'used up' and won't go on to produce a very robust plant, if at all. I planted one this year of Wildwood Marie and the plant was indeed very slow, much smaller than a fresh tuber-produced W.Marie plant and the flowers are smaller too. You can see if the mother tuber will produce shoots next year for cuttings, which is why I kept a couple of them. They are generally darker looking than a new tuber taken out of the ground. You can see the difference in color here. Mother on the left and new tuber/s to the right. And here as well. This is my Show and Tell which got crushed/broken by a falling neighbor plant or two. But if you get the amazing beet colored tubers the 'different color' theory goes right out the window! I can't recall if the mother was obvious on the pink clump, probably. Maybe it had a cane and shawl.

depends on the depth. 14'x5'=70 square feet. To know how much mix you will need we need to figure out the cubic feet. One way to do this is: Length x width x height (in inches) / 1728 = cubic feet. (14')168" x (5')60" x 6" (height) / 1728 = 35 cubic feet of area to fill. If you need 8" of depth then it's: 168 x 60 x 8 / 1728 = 46.6 cubic feet. If you will be purchasing ingredients by the bag you will find the peat and vermiculite in bags with the number of cubic feet on them. The compost is often sold by weight rather than volume so you will have to guesstimate with that. If you intend to purchase some garden soil from a nursery rather than make Mel's mix those places sell by the cubic yard. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Regardless of what you buy, plan on purchasing 10% more than you need. There will be some settling that occurs so any extra will be used soon enough. Hope this helps

Yup, exactly right. That flat rectangular part on the left of the hinge is hinged, and in the closed position, presses the two jaws of the round part against the sides of the hole it sits in. Just like Casey said above, take something flat and blunt and lift up a corner of the rectangular part. It should hinge back, release the jaws, and the door should pop right off.
