We bumped out a 24" deep 48" wolf hood. We did this to insure the hood covered the front burners. We did not want the 27" deep wolf hood because I did not like the convoluted air flow of that model created by the placement of the warming lamps, which we also did not want. Also the baffles in the 27" were much more awkward to remove for cleaning.

Not sure what your husband has against 27" deep hoods. We liked the style and fit and finish of the Wolf hood more than just about any other brand, but I did not like the mechanics. If wolf made a version of the 27" with baffles in the rear we probably would have gone that direction and not bothered with the bump out. But with the bump out, you end up in effect with a 27" deep hood. Depending on what you are putting under the hood, a 24" with no bump out may be fine. "Pro" ranges are deeper than conventional ranges so need a little more depth. If you are not using a pro style range, a 24" hood may be fine.

To bump the unit out, the GC build a frame of 2x6s that matches the outline of the back of the hood. He used a double layer, thus pushing the mounting plane out 3.5" from the back wall. Hood was mounted to this box. We had planned a stainless back splash behind the range anyway, so we had the sheetmetal guy make a long strip of stainless to wrap the edges of the box, so at a glance, it looks like the hood is stainless to the wall. This would probably work fine even if you are not using a stainless back splash. Or maybe you could finish the 2x6 frame in some other material, like wall board or good quality wood. Not sure how tile would look. Note this works with a hood that has a flat rear mounting surface. Some of the curvy euro-style hoods may not support this kind of mounting.

At any rate, works well. Hood covers the front burners nicely, which is where the heavy duty cooking is done,and it looks fine.

Thanks, I will have him read this. He felt the 27" would stick out too much. He is almost 6'2" and thought it just might be in the way, and also the extra $$$ of the 27". My concern would be all the stuff in the front like everyone talks about and maybe just another inch would help.

First, I recommend you get to a good appliance showroom if possible, preferably one that actually has kitchens set up with cabinets and a hood etc, not just stoves lined up in a row. See if a 27" hood really is a problem. Remember, you naturally stand back from the range when you cook, so your head is some ways back from the front of the hood. In additional you naturally bend over to reach the back burners. Head bumping is usually less of of an issue than people think. But find some properly installed equipment and try it out.

In addition you may find you only have to bump out one 2x6's worth or 1.5". Depends on the type of range you are covering and where the burners sit. Burner position on the stove top varies from brand to brand, but is obviously less that the stated depth dimension on the range datasheet. Look at installation specs on line or again go to the store and measure. And finally depends on your cooking. If you don't do a lot of high temp sauteing or woking, none of this will be as important.

You may find that a 27" hood is the best choice, or you may not. I agree that you may get a lot of milage out of just a 1.5" bumpout. If you do bumpout, try to cover the bottom edge of the 2x6 with some sort of metal sheeting to fireproof it and to aid in easy cleaning.

If you choose to bump out the range hood, keep in mind that you'll need to change the depth of any surrounding cabinetry to match the bump out. Most range hoods are designed to align with 12" deep upper cabinets.

My range hood is bumped out 3" because I have 15" deep upper cabinets over 30" deep contertops. A 3" stainless steel spacer was installed behind the range hood to fill the gap.

In the photos below you can see the range hood in relation to the finished cabinetry, and a close-up of the 3" spacer held in place by rivets (two are visible in the photo).

Nice photos James. The sheet metal work more or less matches ours. Stainless backsplash and stainless wrapping the material used to bump out the hood. This makes it much easier to understand what I was trying to say. Good point about the cabinets. We didn't have cabinets over or beside our rangetop so it never occurred to me.

I also will have 30" deep counters (with a 36" Bluestar range), and need to select a hood.
Did you bump out a 24" deep hood or 27" hood? It looks like a 24" hood by the pictures? Does your hood cover the front burners? Would you bump it further?

I am considering a 42" Ventahood (900cfm) with a depth of 27", and wondering if I should bump it out 3" or 6" inches.

Seal_beach, I have a 36" Bluestar rangetop in standard depth counters with a 24" deep ventahood that I wished I had bumped out 3" or chosen the 27" deep one. So I would always recommend a 27" deep hood with the bluestar. With your Bluestar set out 6" from your wall to accommodate your deeper counters, you should probably bump out your hood that extra 6" too.
