System file on Desktop...Need help

Yes, when I put this thing to bed last night, all was normal. When I first logged on this morning, I decided I would uninstall Picassa, as I have too many photo editing programs. All went well and every trace was removed. Then I noticed the new folder on the desktop. A system folder.. this is what it breaks down to;

documents and settings

my name

application data

microsoft

system certificates

My

certificates

crls

ctls

I thought it might have been left from the uninstall of Picassa, so I shut down and restarted and it's still there.Where does it go and is it ok to put it back? It's not a shortcut, but the actual system folder. I'm running WXP and IE7.

Any help appreciated!

I don't have any answer for you but would be curious if you still have the original folder and files in the original position... something like this in explorer
C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My

Microsoft folder probably has several other folders contained within it.

Nope...can't find it mikie. It appears that documents and settings, etc; are subfolders coming from this system files folder. Strange thing is that they all show 0 bytes. Not taking any space. I don't like to dig around in the windows system files, but guess that is where I need to look next.
Any suggestions? Thanks for all your help! Ida

I am always amazed when people say they have loads of photos or music that they do not want to lose or cannot replace yet have never backed up these valuables. If your hard drive fails tomorrow you have a very real problem. You are not alone in this and I am not trying to be mean spirited but if you fail to look after you and your possessions then who will? For less than $50 you can buy a name brand DVD-RW and for under $20 you can buy 100 blank DVDs. You can buy a lesser amount of blanks of course, that is a choice you can make. The DVD will come with software you install to use it. Or if you already have blank CDs you could use those in the DVD burner. If you back some of that stuff up and remove it from this computer it may well run faster because you will have more free space on the hard drive for the swap file to work better. Does your activity light come on frequently and stay on for long periods? If so this is an indication the swap file is have a problem. Then if you really want to get carried away you can visit Big Lots where they have (or did recently in the Buffalo, NY store) CD or DVD labels and the software to create your own labels for $10 or $11. Another option would be to install this hard drive as a slave in the new computer you intend to buy. You would need to check that there are compatible data connections in the new computer. Older hard drives are IDE or ATA but the newer and faster technology is SATA.

I think you're thinking too much about it, it should be very simple. -Start Windows Explorer -Put the copies of the files you want on the CD into one (perhaps new?) folder on your hard drive if they're not already together. -Go to that folder and highlight the files. To highlight multiple files, hold down the CTRL key as you click. -Just under the menu bar you should see the word "Burn" -Click Burn and follow the remaining instructions. EDIT I'm assuming you're creating data disks and not audio disks to play in audio devices. Come back if it's the second one, the steps may be different (I do audio disks with other software, not with windows. Well if you had success with Malwarebytes perhaps it is not necessary to run Superantispyware. If you would care to try then as you start the computer keep tapping the F8 button and a screen will appear with start up options. Select safe mode, everything will look totally different to the normal startup because only essential drivers have been allowed to start. My concern was the fact you mentioned AVG was not running properly. That is a good indicator of trouble. On reading the initial post a second time it appears you overcame that issue

Open your 'My Documents' folder and also open the 'My Documents' folder in the win.old folder. Right click on the task bar and select 'show windows side by side'. It should then be easy to drag your files from the old folder into the new.

Couple of things I might try, first off right click on this folder and then click Properties. This should then tell you how many files and the total size of the folder. Doing this will alert you to any hidden files that may just be in there. Hopefully there will be none. If so then I think I would cut and paste it into my My Documents folder for a day or so to see where you are going with this. If after a given amount of use the computer shows no ill effect you should then be able to delete this folder safely.

After doing this you could also give the computer a clean up with Crap Cleaner this would determine if those files were active or not.

This might be non related BUT once I was doing some things on my husband's computer which required me to expose all the normally hidden files on the computer and things like you mention became visable which had never shown before. To return the hidden files to their hidden state I had to do the following, which may work for you: Click on My Computer on the Desktop..Tools...Folder Options...View...check to be sure 1. Hide extentions for known file types and 2. Hide protected operating system files (recommended), are both checked. Then hit apply and OK. This will take any files the background activities need to function back to their hidden state so we don't mess with them.

Thanks to all of you! You're a great group! I did check properties to get the names of the folders and files to display.All showed zero bytes. I also checked for hidden files and there were none. Also all the correct boxes for hiding and showing files were checked already. I talked to the guy that built my computer and I'll share what he told me in case someone else has this problem. He said since all files and folders showed zero value, that it would not hurt to just delete them. So this is what I did. I will leave the folder in the Recycle Bin for a while and if all runs well, I will dump it later. Looks better in there than on my desktop. As a second thought, has anyone ever uninstalled Picasso without a problem? I remember I had a problem before, so I will make a note to not try it again!Thanks again!! Ida
