Viking range required trim, Why?

I am buying a Viking 30" gas rangetop, and I'm wondering why they are insisting I also buy a piece of overpriced "Island Trim."

As it happens, the rangetop isn't going on an island; it's going on a granite surface that abuts a fireproof ceramic tile wall (not just a backsplash.) I get that I have to buy the trim to get the stove, but is there any reason why I actually really need to install it? I mean, it looks to me like all it will do is collect grease. If I have the contractor install the rangetop at the specified distance from the wall, why do I need this unsightly piece of aluminum?

I'm not sure about a rangetop, but with a range, the island trim often serves as the oven vent. Since you don't have an oven, I don't know the answer to your question - you should call Viking technical support and see what they says.

Because - what do you think will fall into and collect in the space at the back of the top but before the tile wall if you don't cover it up with a piece that was engineered to be there?

Almost all pro ranges and tops need this piece. You could also do a 6", 10" 12" or more tall backguard with or without warming shelves instead of the little island upstand. Everyone is not trying to rip you off.

"I think they are only pro style ovens not true commercial grade. :)" This is untrue. Nor are Viking and Wolf the only brand options. Commercial grade ranges are not what most people install. What you may be referring to is "pro style" ranges -- usually gas and stainless that look more or less like the Wolf and Viking. There are many other brands of these including Thermador, Dacor, Culinarian, Blue Star, Five Star, GE Cafe, Bertazzoni and several more that don't come immediately to mind. Each range can do the basic job but there are wide variations in features, options. Then there are straightforward residential ranges which also have a wide range of features and options. This can be an overwhelming choice. But it's requires time and thought if you cook to any degree.

I too , am glad that it's resolved for you. I'm also glad to hear that Viking actually makes good on their no quibble pledge. But, I do have to say they could have saved themselves a lot of neg. publicity if they had informed their dealers and even their own in house support staff that they'll take back their products no questions asked in the 90 days . They'd have gotten a lot of goodwill for the same cost by just coming to pick up bo61's range when asked. Shame it took a weeks worth of internet ranting and a VP level decision to ACTUALLY make reality live up to the advertising . Hey , it's a start the right direction guys.

It is a code violation (where there are codes) to install a range against a combustible surface without the manufacturer's specified back guard. Walls made of wood studs, for example, are combustible, even if a non-combustible surface treatment is used. The manufacturer's installation instructions rule in this case. Wimpy ranges may be OK with island trim. Otherwise, note why island trim is so named; it is intended for use where there is no wall rising behind the range. See IMC par. 308.4.2, which includes this table. Backguards are designed so that UL will approve them to meet the purposes of this table.

Actually MUA is not required by Code everywhere, only some areas. Regardless of Code requirements, the OP needs to do MUA with 1200 cfms because that much suckage carries with it the risk of sucking back CO into the house, i.e. backdraft. It's a serious risk because with that much cfms pulling air out of the house, other exhausts will be pulled in, like from the water-heater, furnace, chimney and dryer vent. That backdraft is bringing poisonous carbon monoxide into the home. You can get away with no MUA with an exhaust that is 400-600 cfms and if your house is drafty and not a newer super-insulated house. But not at 1200 cfms. At 1200 cfms, cracking a window will not be enough. You will need to install an MUA system. Either add that to the expense of your renovation, or choose a different cooking setup. People not willing to install MUA is a main reason why people forego the 60" ranges and their exhaust requirements, and opt instead for a 36" rangetop and separate ovens.

The rangetops were shipped with an opening on the back to allow for you to choose between an Island Trim, 6" backguard, 10" backguard or 24" Highshelf. The new rangetops are now available for order and they now come with an island trim included at no charge. Now they only offer a 8" backguard or 24" highshelf.

My mom was given the same spiel about that little trim piece for her Viking rangetop. She still doesn't understand why it was necessary. It just collects grease. It would be easier to wipe down the strip of countertop behind the range top after every use. The only thing we can come up with is that the strip provides a continuity of the stainless look all the way back to the wall so that you get a look similar to that of a range vs. the look of a drop in cooktop.

Guys and Gals. The strip is necessary because the the "guts" of the unit are larger than the show top. If you didn't have the trim or 24" shelf there would be a gap between the burners /top and the back wall. It would collect crap even more than the island trim.

You can't really run countertop mtrl behind there unless your fabricator was to do some fancy sculpting, read CNC machine. It'd likely cost more than the trim piece from Viking.
