Yachter,

I must scold you for writing in your last post, "I really have no place to put it." You must be a little worn out from all that rain and just not thinking straight.

When all else is filled to the brim, you can always decorate the guest bathroom.

And don't forget to turn on the mp3 player (hiddent back of the toilet) with Vincent Price reading The Tell-Tale Heart.

ROFLMBO!!!!! I was afraid to open this post, thought I was in BIG trouble!

OK, you've got me beat, I see I'll need a lot more if I am to believe that I have to start decorating the guest bathroom now too!

I haven't taken a label at a big box place (HD, Lowe's, Wally World) at face value for years now. I've duly registered my complaints, only to have them ignored each and every time. Okay, so I have grown up with an understanding of hardiness, microclimates, environmental factors and all kinds of information about plants because I was born in Sacramento, CA, lived there until I was 7 years old, and then started traveling all over the world. When my family first purchased a home in Sparks, Nevada in 1973, the first book I purchased from my allowance was the Sunset Garden Book. I was 14. The zone designations are very different from the USDA designations, but those Sunset zones also contain a lot of descriptive information about the climate in a given zone: humidity, high temperatures, low temperatures, rainfall, altitude, sun, cloud cover, winds--everything. Needless to say, I already knew what was likely to succeed in my climate before I purchased my first plants and seeds less than a year later. Sure, it would be nice if big box stores carried information accurate for their locations. Sure, it would be nice if garden center staff had even half a clue. But you don't get information (accurate or otherwise) or helpful staff at big box prices. There's a reason the locally-owned nurseries often charge two to three times as much for the same plant. And even if garden centers here in Reno-Sparks have information available and tolerably trained staff, it's still not adequate. My zip code (89431) spans climate zones ranging from 5a to 7a, and I'm not even considering microclimates. The zip code contains altitudes that differ by as much as 1000 feet (literally ear-popping on some streets), and that have varying degrees of exposure to prevailing wind and weather, at least three different soil types (former marsh clay soil, former river bed sandy soil, and rocky sandy volcanic mountain soil) and varying degrees of proximity to large and small bodies of water (a river, a man-made lake, agricultural ditches, seasonal streams, drainage ponds, high water tables, low water tables, rain shadows and arid desert). It's the same all over the greater Reno-Sparks area. Conditions in my garden are not the same as conditions in another friend's garden only two miles away. It's not realistic to expect any but the most experienced of nursery staff, gardeners themselves, to even come close to knowing what will grow or not grow in a given customer's garden. Perhaps in areas where the climate is more consistent it would be reasonable to expect garden center staff and plant labels to reflect the prevailing conditions. Still, I think that principles of garden shopping and plant selection in Northern Nevada are useful anywhere. Know your own garden, know your own climate, know your own microclimates. Don't expect the vendors to know it for you.

Love the roll of toilet paper! How cute. My little GD would love that too. Did you paint the little buckets? They are just darling, and I love that you put the hand towels in them. I've never thought about putting Halloween in mine either Yachter,but it is a cute idea. Luvs

Go right ahead and steal the Tell-Tale Heart idea. I stole it from somewhere else. There's a restaurant chain in my area that's called the Macaroni Grill. They have audio Italian Lessons playing continually in the their bathrooms. After going there (pardon the awful pun), I decided to always try and have a little audio surprise for my guests in the bathroom. Usually it's music. And I usually post the song list up on the mirror.
When the Bunco gals are over, I have songs like Nat King Cole's "Chances Are," Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" and Sinatra's "Luck Be a Lady Tonight."
When it's St. Patrick's Day, anything from Bing Crosby's Top O The Morning album or songs by the Irish Rovers will do.
One Halloween, I created a song list entitled "Songs That Have Nothing To Do With Halloween, But Sound Like They Should." Among they were ones like Santana's "Black Magic Woman," Johnny Cash's "Ghost RIders in the Sky," and Rosemary Clooney's "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered."
It's always great fun to hear the comments as people return from down the hall and rejoin the party.

My granddaughter would love the toilet paper too. But she and her little siblings are not allowed to use the guest bathroom. They have been schooled to use the one in the back bathroom. I probably should put a roll in their bathroom, but the darn stuff is so expensive! A roll will last for about two dinner parties (and I do save it from year to year). Guess I could put the roll in their bathroom when it gets too wound down to put out for a party.
Oh, yes, I did paint the buckets. But I fear I have no "style" like you seem to have. Are you for hire???? Or do you give lessons??

You must be kidding! Those buckets are "to die for" cute, I couldn't do any better than that! Love them.
