Hands-free faucet controls for kids bathroom?

I am considering a Tapmaster (a floor mounted hands-free faucet control) for a new Jack-and-Jill bathroom between my children's rooms. I think this will significantly cut down on all the water that is left on the countertops after they wash their hands from turning the faucet on and off, not to mention the germ factor. I initially heard of this product on the kitchen forum, however, and wanted to see if anyone had installed them in their bathrooms? If you have installed it in your bathroom, what is your impression of the product? Is it worth the price? Thanks for your help!

My parents' neighbors have foot pedal controls in their bathrooms, for accessability - he lost both arms when he was a child.

I don't know the brand of their pedal units, but they are neat. Take some getting used to.

I will say that factoring in a kiddo age where messy handwashing/germ prevention is a concern... and the strength/coordination needed for the neighbors' particular brand of foot pedals, I'm not sure it would be a good match. It takes a decent amount of pressure to turn the tap on and keep it on. Enough pressure that a young'en might have a hard time maintaining it and/or balancing.

But that's just their particular make/model/application...

I would probably go with a remote sensor faucet instead, the kind that turns on automatically when your hands get close to it. It stays clean and obviously no germs issue (I'm not a germophobe, but I've always despised sink faucets with round-ish knobs. I know everyone's hands aren't clean when they turn it on - that's why you're washing your hands in the first place - but you have to grasp a dirty knob to shut it off. 1/4-turn lever-type handles, or single-handle faucets where you lift the lever to turn on, push down to turn off are much better, since at least I can push the lever with the back of my hand to turn water off, and the front or top of the lever in theory should be relatively clean.)

Wooo!!! Cat, I am stuck at home because of the snow storm so wandered around here not looking at anything in particular and came upon your thread. I totally agree with you on the shower curtain choice. Regardless of whether I have the money to spare or not, keeping those suckers clean is a nuisance over time. We have a glass shower door that was installed back in 2003 and I can't tell you how much I hate cleaning it. Not that the door is all that dirty, but a shower curtain is way easier, and you can change the look/style whenever you feel like it. Can't do that with a pricey shower door. Anyway, everything looks lovely as usual, including the "prom" dress :-) Love, love those circular tiles, and the floor tiles that look like fabric. Gorgeous. What colour is that again? It looks greyish on my monitor.

I don't mind the marble in the kitchen or laundry but I would think twice about the little kids' bathrooms unless you are super meticulous. Not only can a water cup leave a ring but if placed in the same spot over and over again, it will start to really make a mark. You can of course circumvent this by making sure that you don't leave anything on the counters but only in drawers/cabinets. We had a soap dish that we thought was never wet and lo and behold when I moved it one day it left an imprint. Because of that, I left the soap dish where it was and then forever I could never move it because it got worse and worse. My kids like to have the hand soap on their counters and so I had to purchase trays for that too--which I had to make sure were never wet underneath. It's a bit high maintenance to have marble in a bathroom. Our last house I used white granite instead and then never worried about it! Here is the white granite--totally bulletproof. Never stained etched or had ANY problems.

Well since no one took the the time to respond.... The solution I have discovered is mixing brands using a thermostatic valve trim (Delta in our case because they make a simplified version instead of two separate handles/valves) with a low flow handheld from a different brand- Kohler makes one on a slide bar that's 1.75gpm, Moen makes a 1.5. I didn't know you could mix brands and components as long as you keep the trim plate and inner valve the same brand.

Totally get the frustration! Both our bathrooms are small and we had a lot of "where do we hang the towel' dilemmas too, especially as we have a pocket door in our main bathroom so can't put things on the back of it. We ended up with a small towel bar mounted over the vanity on an adjacent wall, and a heated towel rack on the one free wall so that we could hang multiple towels vertically and folded and they would actually dry. We almost had a TP holder mounting crisis and the place we've had to mount it is strictly much closer to the toilet than is recommended, but it looks and feels fine. A folded towel right on top of the toilet isn't super appealing, but a nice shelf above the toilet with a folded towel on it might work? My parents have two tiers of towel bars (not hooks) on the back of their bathroom door. which is in fact pretty functional. Annoying you can't get a robe hook in beside the shower!
