Upgrading to Win7 OEM from Vista

Hi Everybody,

I have the option to upgrade from Vista to Win7 OEM Version. I'm curious... Will I lose all my programs in Vista, etal: MS Office 2007, which I am most concerned with.

What about my documents folder, though I do have that folder on an external disk, and my browsers.

I had seen in another post that someone couldn't find their MS Publisher after the upgrade.

bb below is link to a short blurb on the subject from MS themselves. There is mention of 'if your version cannot be upgraded', no idea what that would mean.

I would suggest the most important part of the article is the link near the bottom to run a compatibility test on your computer. Assuming yours passes you would be good to go.

Upgraded means you lose nothing. Here is a tutorial from WindowsSeven, a great place with a wealth of information strictly for Windows 7

The publisher program the other poster mentioned is not a part of Windows 7 but comes with MS Office. Your Office 2007 should not be affected in any way.

In previous versions of windows you could not use the OEM version to upgrade - you had to do a new install. Upgrading required using a retail version.

it can be done and once you figure out what it is it is very quick and easy unfortunately I can not remember but I did find it by googling and it was easy to find. I did post the info here for someone so searching here may turn it up also. Have you checked to make sure every single computer in the network has the same workgroup name and printer share name every thing has to be exactly the same on all. this is one site I did use Sharing Files In Windows 7 Setting up your HomeGroup Share a Printer on Your Network from Vista or XP to Windows 7 this one may be the one that helped me out do the directions given by jimbo45 be sure you use the actual names of your computers and printer instead of the example names he uses. 7 Printer sharing

Before doing anything be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose including your contact list for emails. Make a note of installed programs and find the needed CD/DVD for each. I think you will have to do a fresh install of Vista, not positive but I doubt they included the ability to move backwards. The advantage would be that everything is squeaky clean. Use the Vista CD/s you have but when it requires the 25 digit authentication code use the one fixed to the computer now. If you go with a fresh install you should allow the computer to format the drive, select NTFS to make the best use of the hard drive. You should go to the Dell site, download and save all the drivers you will need before proceeding. Save these on a thumb drive or CD if the DVD player problem has been addressed. DVD player is very easy to install. simply shut down and either switch off at the rear if provided or remove the power cord. Remove both sides, remove 2 screws each side of DVD player, remove wide (2 inch) ribbon cable, flat power cable and skiiny sound wire. Slide defective DVD player out then reverse the procedure to install the new DVD player. done.

When evaluating software or hardware, it makes sense to ignore the popular press, especially the tech blogs and to an extent, consumer opinion. Change is difficult for us humans and the early reviews of XP bear it out. Below is a snapshot of cnet's Windows XP review back in 2001. I got to this page using the web archive. Note that cnet bemoans the fact that a user can only load XP on one computer. Really cnet? And note user opinions: 48% disliked XP after its first several months. Microsoft was roundly criticized for not having an OS that would work across all platforms: computer, tablet and mobile phone. Now Win 8 is negatively reviewed for not having a start button. Anyone remember when the criticism was that Windows had a start button? I use Win7 home premium on this computer and Win7 Pro on my daytrading rig. The next computer I buy will have Windows 8. You can indeed buy an OEM version and save a few bucks. My three XP versions are all OEM, I had to buy some hardware each time though. (Earlier it had been serious hardware like a hard drive, video card and the like but later I bought XP with a cheap mouse and another time a fan to qualify) OEM comes in an envelope, no box to throw away. There is no difference in the retail or OEM program, just the rules are different. Buying OEM means you have no support from Microsoft, all updates and patches are available to you of course. All needed support is supposed to be provided by the seller of the software I had a problem with activation that MS was not willing to allow till I phoned and spoke with a help desk lady. It involved a computer I had built but which refused to run smoothly. Over time I swapped an MSI and Asus motherboard 3 times, the third time was too much for MS as they thought I was using this on multiple computers. After my call I was activated but have refused to change much on that machine since LOL, plus I have it working right now anyway.

The upgrade version of Windows 7.

(as opposed to the higher-price full version) lets one move from any properly licensed version of Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7 on that same computer. Only certain of these upgrades, however, can be done as a simple update--what Microsoft calls an "in-place upgrade." Users moving from Windows XP, switching from 32-bit to 64-bit versions, or moving from a higher-end version of Vista to a lower-end version of Windows 7 can use an upgrade disc but will have to do a more cumbersome upgrade, known as a custom, or "clean," installation.

So we may need to take the OEM Version back and get the Windows 7 up-grade version as we will be going from already installed Vista to Windows 7. I'm somewhat confused myself

I was thinking of upgrading so searched online to see if my pc was compatible, there were several things that weren't. I didn't know how to fix them so I decided against the upgrade.

Found this at another forum. Thought I'd share.

I updated/upgraded five machines from XP and Vista to Windows 7. I did the "clean" install on each. I use Office 2007 and the upgrades seemed to keep most all of my stuff. I have not found anything missing.
Just for info, I backed up those directories/folders/files first, just in case.
So far the the only thing that has failed to work for me (my wife actually) is an old Windows 98/XP Typing instruction program. I think that is because I did the upgrades on both desktops to 64bit, up from 32bit.
Also just for info, just a couple of weeks ago I downloaded and installed the beta for Office 2010. It seems to be going very well also.

Wonder if he used the OEM or the Retail version??? Think I'll ask!
