Taking Photos during Construction

For people who have done automatic still photos during construction, I was hoping to get opinions on the equipment used and how did you mount it across the construction site so it didn't get stolen or run over. I was looking at the Day 6 plotwatcher on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WQ1ONU/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) which can take stills at any amount of time interval.

I was going to set it up to take photos every hour during the day time, and then make a video at the end.

Photos of the interior walls after wiring, plumbing, HVAC, etc. but before closing them up would be more useful later on.

Using it as my build started about two weeks ago. Taking a photo every 30 minutes from 7 am to 7 pm. I am happy with the results so far. I simply mounted mine on a fence post and put a sign in front of it. It is pretty easy to spot though. I put a note inside asking for any thief to please return SD card if stolen. Who knows? So far two weeks no thieves. I am in a fairly out of the way area that is probably working in my favor.

you could technically transplant plants anytime, but preferably do it while the plants are dormant. In this case Wheeley, best to take a large root ball disturbing the roots as little as possible. Sedums do have retain good moisture in their leaves and have a very good chance of survival. Sedums so easily propagate using stem cuttings alone. Last year I propagated several plants from one plant(autumn joy) by sticking stems directly in the ground. This plant has a high survival rate. Tulips are still fine for as long as you do the same thing. My thoughts on this however is that most tulips do not perform as great as their first year of bloom in your garden which is why the Dutch practice replanting new bulbs every fall. Might just be too much trouble trying to save them. However - like I said, it's up to you. If there are plants that have not come up yet - then it's still dormant and therefore it's the best time to transplant them. They basically won't 'feel' a think when they 'wake up' in a new place. For larger plants that already have leafed out, give them a good drink of water the day before - just to give them enough nourishment before transplanting them.

I know this thread is old, but we have been struggling to get a house build since early this year. We have wrapped walls and a roof with a something that goes under the shingles but no shingles yet. It's in Arkansas and we've had rain for the better of the past two weeks and my main concern is our second story where there are holes in the roof for future ventilation. One of the bedrooms has a spot that has either been wet or has a bit of standing water for the past two weeks. Since the upstairs is all wood sub floor I rather concerned. Both the photos are before the storms we had last night that dumped another 2 inches of rain. I've experienced water issues in 2 houses, and when I see a water stained door, I'm thinking that's a bad sign.

We have white and red oaks, hickory, and black cherry trees covering our lot. We wanted to save as many trees as possible, so after we cleared the building site, septic area, and driveway, we only cleared 10' out from the building envelope. After the house was completed, we realized where the branches of the oaks nearest the house would be in a few years, once the lower and middle branches sprouted and grew out from the sun that now reached them. We had the tree guys come back and cut down everything within 25' of the house. It costs less to get it all done at once. And if they have to take down individual trees near a house it gets really expensive! BTW, after we'd cleared our lot, lightning hit the neighbor's white oak (~2' in diameter) that was 3' from our lot line. It cracked the tree into 3 parts, which the neighbor had to rope together and tie to our other trees to keep the parts from falling on his house until he could get someone over to take it down. Huge chunks of bark and many branches of all sizes blew all across both lots. Several of our tall trees were bent over by the blast; after 7 years, they are close enough to being straight that they no longer look strange. You can't prepare for everything, but the obvious is that a large branch that is over or near a roof can be blown with great force into a roof during a storm, and probably will mean water running down into the house and causing lots of damage, as happened to a neighbor a couple of doors down who kept the 10' perimeter. Siding and windows broken by flying debris are easier to fix temporarily, and the damage would be more limited than a branch falling on a roof. I've seen smaller branches knifed into the soil after storms. The force of the end of a branch hitting the roof plywood or OSB or wedging under shingles can be considerable. Anne

Ricsfan - When we did our kitchen reno in our first house my kids were young... both under five. My hubby stayed home and I took the kids down to my mom's for awhile during the worst of the construction. I can't even imagine how exhausting it must be to be at home with the kids while something like this is going on. Very stressful indeed!! Ya see - I keep telling myself there are so many up-sides to this whole getting older thing!!! As difficult as the mess is for me, I know I'm taking it much better than I would have 20 years ago. Hang in there. We're both going to love our new kitchens - I just know it!

We're doing the low tech version of this: every day work is done on our site, my husband takes a photo from the same spot.

We considered a game camera for security. That might be an option for you-- they start at a couple hundred bucks on Amazon and many can be programmed to do what you describe.

I did low tech as well... I have been taking photos from the same spot each time there is progress. My spot is right beside the port-o-potty! Once it was framed and bricked on the outside, there has been little change on the exterior, I would not want to purchase something costly for this. W did take photos of each and every wall before insualation and drywall stage. Tey have been very useful. We have been able to locate a smoke detector wiring, a few loops behind vanities, and an outlet and can light that were covered up by drywall. We also used it to help the plumber find the shut off valve for our pot filler. The cabinet guy covered it up. We would have had lots more random holes had I not had these photos for reference. If I were to do it again, I would have taken pics of the ceilings, too. A speaker box was covered over, too.

I didn't know this product existed! Very cool. If I owned it right now, I'd set it up to photograph the baby birds in the tree outside my window. Wouldn't it be fun to see them grow up before your eyes?

I'm thinking of getting a motion detector security camera setup... theft from construction sites is not uncommon. Along with motion detector flood lights, I'm hoping this will deter theft AND trespassing from the tax assessor's office :)

Love the droll understatement!

If it were possible, I'd surround every site with barbed wire, prison camp lighting and packs of junkyard dawgs roaming free. IOW, a NYC new car dealership.
