Is Central Vacuum worth it in multi-story house?

I grew up with a central vac system in our one-story rambler. Made sense -- one hose that we had to carry around. Very easy. Now, we are thinking of installing it in our 3-story house. Will cost about $3k and will come with an extra hose (but I'll still have to carry one hose to another floor). Sounded OK at first, but I'm now wondering whether it's worth it. We'll have mostly carpet in basement and 2nd floor, but hardwood on 2nd. I have cleaning service that comes to vacuum every 2 weeks, so I myself will vacuum most areas just occasionally (I'll do kitchen and baths more often).

Can anyone with experience tell me whether central vac (including those vacpans) would be worth it?
