Upgrade Question

Dell Inspiron 2650 256 memory. The book says you can go to 512 memory. A memory stick seller said the same. I ordered a 256 memory stick. I opened up as per all instructions and could find only one place to hold a memory stick which already held the original memory stick. Have I been duped or can something be done to this set up so that the additional memory stick can be installed. To my knowledge they have no single 512 Memory sticks. This Computer is rarely used, but I would like to have add'l memory. Tnx. Grady

Your laptop does have a maximum of 512MB memory. There should be two memory slots, one via a access panel on the bottom of your laptop and one underneath the keyboard. Normally, at least Toshiba does this, when the laptop comes from the factory/store with its original memory, that is inserted under the keyboard leaving the access panel on the bottom empty.
Which one did you check? Is there any writing/numbers on the stick that you see in the memory slot

I used to have this same computer, and, as I recall, only one memory slot is accessible to the user. Only a certified Dell technician can add memory to the other slot. That's why I got a new laptop and gave this one to my son who only uses for e-mail and occasional surfing.

Thanks saxman1... I did remember to pull the wire, but didn't have a suitable 2x4 handy and was trying to block the blade w/ a 1" dowel which didn't work too well. Regardless, I think I'll need a breaker bar of some sort since it wasn't budging at all. The steel deck is still in decent shape, but I was looking to the future. The underside of the deck was horribly filthy though. I think the seal on the transfer tube box had failed and was leaking exhaust under the desk (is that possible?). The motor shaft wasn't wet as if there was a lower seal leak, so I don't think the excessive filth was coming from there. Ordered a new trailing edge guard, carb kit, mikuni jet, faster gear set, lower seal (just in case), and hope to get this thing back in shape for the next few years. Its funny though... I've got two new LBs (another 10323 and a 10550) still in the boxes on my loft in the shed... can't bring myself to pulling them out while I've got one that is serviceable... I guess I'm 'saving' them for sometime down the road. Also contemplating selling them and putting those funds towards a new ZTR to replace the craftsman LT. -mike

Painting and other upgrade charge questions

I see a lot of the same BS we just went through with our bldr. Nothing mentioned in contract about painting. Comes time to choose and we're told all walls and ceilings painted same color in flat finish. Can upgrade to eggshell for $200. Am told by super. that flat hides defects better. In other words hides poor sheetrock installation. Red flag! Any other color changes $200 ea. This was final straw. Got my agent involved and have voided contract with full refund due to being hopelessly deadlocked on differences. Many other issues including bldr. having selective memory. Moral: Have bldr. put any and every allowance, how many color choices you have, upgrade fees, cost of any additions, how much credit for deletions. In other words cross every T and dot every I. Thereafter, any statement your bldr. makes in relation to your house. Put it in writing and have him sign. If your bldr. balks or refuses, run, don't walk and never doubt your decision. Seems some in the business are very clever at deception and have selective memory loss by claiming they never said that or agreed to that. Been there.

Is Tbird 3 beta, or is it okay to get it? I'm still using 2.0.0.4, and something happened a couple days ago that removed all the separators, ie New, Last Week, Old. Now all the mail is there with no separators, also changed it to Descending order. Time to change? Sue

2 Questions - cabinets to the ceiling and a bead

I too love the look of stacked cabinets to the ceiling. We have ordered ours from Crown Point & the upper most upper is 19.25 inches tall & the lower upper is 37.75 inches tall. There is going to be a piece of trim between the two upper cabinets & plain 2x2 cove at the celing. I went back & forth about the bead & finally decided to go without it. I read that beaded inset catches a lot of dust & I also felt that the bead looked a little more "fancy" & less period looking than I wanted. But I do like the look of a bead. I would go with the look you love - try not to get swayed by the taste of the designer or you may regret it in the end. I think double stacked cabinets, although more expensive, look much better than layers of built-up trim.

By the way, the replacement laptop I got is one to which I could easily add more memory. It came with two 512MB sticks, so I replaced both with 1GB sticks for a total of 2GB of memory. Very easy to do compared to the old Dell. This one happens to be a HP.

grandms,Tnx for the info on your HP. I think I'll consult with a local shop. (been here several years) as to whether they are capable. Might buy another one, but would prefer a upgrade on this one. It's rarely used and is set up like a pc with external keyboard and mouse. I use a cable between it and my desk top PC hi speed modem when I want to use it. Tnx. Agn. Grady

Grady, the only thing I can think of, is that your laptop if it has not been upgraded with memory yet and contains 256MB and the one slot in the bottom of the laptop has memory in it is that it came with 128MB below the keyboard and 128MB in the ready use slot within the access panel on the botttom.
