laptop virsus note book

I have been thinking about buying a laptop, but people keep saying I should get a note book. I would like to know what the difference is?

I have a desk top and like it but wanted something that I could take around with me.

Does a note book do the same things as a laptop such as read e-mails and listen to music or post pictures?

Any suggestions???

Notebook/Laptop = no difference. Typical portable computer with a lid that closes & wont fit in your purse.

A netbook, that is different. Slightly big, but small enough it might fit in a purse.

Tablet PC's are the computers of the future. But then you need to carry around some kind of laptop table.

Maybe go to an electronics store and test drive the keyboard on a 10" netbook (very small)or a 13-14" notebook (slightly larger and easier to type)

for what she would be using it for it sounds adequate. But be sure you set her up with good antivirus programs and antispyware programs and teach her how to use them and turn on the firewall, I have a friend in her 70's that also uses web tv and does not want a regular pc simply because of all the hassle of dealing with security, instead she just gets the newest units that come out in the web tv or msn tv. You might want to make sure your Mom would want to take on the extra burden a real pc entails. I have seriously considered getting one of the newest units to have to use while sitting in my recliner and use my big screen tv, with my eyesight and arthritis would be easier than a laptop. but to your question the processor is a decent size and is a dual core. good amount of ram with 2 gig, and a decent size HD, having the built in card reader would make it easy for her to load the memory card from a camera directly into the pc and not deal with any camera software,price sounds ok too, they are coming down in price now for the holidays, there may be some cheaper but who knows.

Ms. Rose, do you have a Micro Center in your area? They have a web site but when you go into their stores, unlike a lot of the Best Buy folks, the people who work there are VERY educated in what they sell and the prices are great. My uses are very similar to yours. I've owned a lot of laptops and have paid a lot of money for extra's I never used. My favorite so far has been smaller sized, inexpensive HP's and Compaqs (400.00 or less) with a key pad on the board. They have all the features needed like micro card slots, usb ports, ample ram and hard drive space but are lighter and easier to move around with. After having an 18 inch mammoth HP and hating it, I'll never go larger than 15 inch again. It hasn't happened yet, but I am glad that if after a couple of years something does go wrong with the unit, it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace. Micro Center also has a great warranty program if that's something you are interested in. One thing that people don't usually think about but is really important is to know where the vent fans are for your system. HP used to build them on the bottom causing the units to get very hot. They've now redesigned them to vent on the side, but I'm not sure if all manufactures have done that yet. Also, I know a lot of people are happy with them, but my husband is an IT computer guy and a Dell employee; he's very familiar with their products and feels they are not what they used to be and are over priced for what you get. We generally lounge in the living room with the laptop and iPad while watching tv. I take the iPad with me wherever, be it the kitchen for a recipe, up to the library (I know, sounds grand, but it's just a 9x13 bedroom I converted), or outside. They slide under the couch when not in use. We also have a desktop in the office (another converted bedroom, we only need 1 and have 3). DH mostly uses that for things like paying the bills, photo editing since he is really into that and it needs tons of processing capacity, and I use it when I need to print things. Someday I will updat my iPad software so I can print, but I've got other stuff to do. We also have assorted cords for things on every window sill downstairs. I am trying to find a place for a charging station thanks to GW. I would LOVE to get all that stuff organized and tucked away. I think the above suggestion to think about why you gravitate to the current location will help a lot with where to put a computer area in the new space. For me, since I do not currently have a job that requires me to tote a laptop around, it's not a big issue. Plus between residency and traveling to assorted professional meetings I have become pretty good at balancing a computer at just about any angle. Being tied to a set spot with an actual chair to sit upright in feels a bit boring now. I also like to multitasking my time wasting/procrastinating.

Ded I was thinking about this and I am wondering if you could just take a big poster board or something like that and tape or staple all the pieces of paper on a category on them. You'd have several poster boards but at least it would be relatively in one place. Then you could take a photograph of them to have them whenever you wish to look at them as you go about your day. It's a thought anyway. I buy poster boards for various things and I also get those large desk calendars and use the backs of the paper for various things so that's what made me think of it.

Just a for info, should have been versus rather than virsus..when I first looked at it, I thought you were reporting a virus in your laptop/notebook...A visit to a big box store will get you familiar with various sizes and what you are happy with..then once you know what size you would like, it would be easier to nail down a suggestion...

I think you mean "netbook" not notebook (which is synonymous with laptop). Netbooks are typically smaller and lighter than laptops, have a less powerful processor, and a smaller screen. Some people find the smaller keyboard of netbooks awkward for touch typing but designs and sizes do vary.

A 13" laptop is a good balance of usable size and portability. There's also a lot to be said for tablets for non-demanding tasks. The better ones can be paired with a wireless keyboard for those times when a virtual keyboard just won't do.

Thanks every one for your suggerstions. Think I will go the Best Buy tomorrow and see just what I think.

FYI, I have a 10" Dell netbook which I find very useful when I want a computer with me on a trip, but want to travel light. However, as noted above, definitely check out the keyboard. There are two issues: 1) they are obviously a little more compact than a standard keyboard (which I don't find that big a deal), and 2) some of the keyboards, like my Dell, have a couple of the keys placed in a non-standard location (and this I find a bigger deal): it's hard to force my touch typing fingers to automatically go to different locations for certain punctuation marks.
