That is a great list of free programs. I do or have used nearly a half of those and have no complaints against any of them. All the programs have a colour coded sign indicating the level of expertise which can be very comforting to those still unsure of their computer. Nice find.

I just found out about Major Geeks, through you guys a few days ago (sideways with that temperature deal). Funny and practical.

Who said utilities have to be boring.

Thanks owbist. I tried with the W7 text to speech but must be doing something wrong since it only recognized the heading and the google info but not the body of the text on a website. I'll keep trying it and others. I'm sure I'll find something that will read webpages eventually. Yeona

natal, can you post a photo or link of your foot-operated trash/recycle cabs, muspic, can I see your cork floor? We're doing cork as well. The telling sign for me was when I went into a "wood flooring" showroom. When I asked where their cork display was (the whole floor was covered in the different wood flooring), I expected them to say they didn't have one (like most stores). Instead, they took me to the area where the employees stood all day. All cork. No wood. Enough said. Alabamamommy, our current house has white Corian counters. They were here when we bought the house and were afraid of them at first, but now we love them. I cook every day and never had any problem getting anything off them, including red white and tumeric. I spilled about 4 t. of tumeric on the counter when I was making keema yesterday. I got most of it right away. After I was done cooking, I saw that I missed a spot. I sprayed the spot with 409, let it sit a few minutes while I cleaned up then came back and it came right off. We've also had success with set stains using Soft Scrub, and even a baking soda paste. For the kitchen in the house we're building, my must haves were: * cork floors (I need the sound proofing for living with a brain injury and active boy!) * walk in pantry (that it is 9'x9'11" is a bonus) * all base drawers * wide aisles * pulls instead of knobs * dropped baking center so I don't have to stand on my tippy toes while kneading bread, and open on two sides so my son can help. * foot pulls for trash * hands free water faucet * island (I ended up with two. WIth my TBI, I can't go out to socialize much, so two islands give me a "little kitchen" where I can focus and not be distracted (aka, burn the house down). The second island allows others to be "in the kitchen" to help prep, socialize, clean up, etc. without being in my space. I can't wait! *desk area for printing recipes, menu planning, etc. * side by side frig. It just works best for the way we live. Funny story, when we bought our current frig, the deciding factor was the one that fix a pizza box. In the last four years, there have been less than 5 pizza boxes in there! We cut out most processed foods. So we love the side-by-side because when I cook dinner, I always make larger portions so we can get 2-4 leftovers out of it. There are packaged in lunch size containers in frozen. Everything is easy to see in the morning, when DH grabs his lunch. * Full size freezer in pantry. We currently have a chest freezer, but we'd like to be able to buy a part of a cow from a local farm, so we're getting a side by side freezer to store our meat and extra bulk goods. DH's must have, beyond what's above: * deep single sink for washing pans (Usually I clean up as I go, but often I run out of steam by the time dinner is done, so he'll do clean up. I figured if I give him the sink he wants, he'll do it even more!) * energy star appliances * water sense sinks * Sharp microwave...

But are these all totally free? I downloaded Spyware Doctor, ran the scan and then it told me I had to pay to fix the problems.

Kevin, you are right they are not all free. When I clicked to add the site to my Bookmarks it said 'Free and freeware' in the title offered. There is a huge difference between 'Free download' and 'Free program' and the vendors know that, those selling enjoy the confusion because some people fork out for the program they have downloaded.

Try the free AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy or Spywareblaster to remove what it is you may have on your computer. Be sure to update any of them that you install as the initial program will be woefully out of date by now. Failing that try one of the many free online scans.

Am I blind, I don't see Spyware Doctor on that list at the link.
I was assuming these were all Freeware, sorry if they're not.

Sorry, maybe I screwed up a bit. It's under Spyware Guard, but when I went to that site my eye immediately went to the top of the page were it said "Recommended Download - Spyware Doctor". That's the one I downloaded. I should have just stuck with the Spyware Guard. My bad.

Welcome to a great forum. Everybody here is so helpful and smart.
If you don't have it already, Ad Aware Spybot and Spyware Blaster are free and very good. Look for those downloads.

Thanks. That other place has been pretty dull of late, so I've been lurking here for a while now. I do have Spyware Blaster and Spybot, but am always on the lookout for something better (if there is such a thing).

If anybody is still following this thread, I just "free" downloaded spyware doctor, found 28 threats, but have to buy program to remove them. Since I'm not sure I want to or should buy this, what should I do? Remove the whole program since it won't do me any good w/o the purchase and how do I remove the bad programs? I have AVG free, SpySweeper (not current), Search&Destroy, McAfee antivirus (not current).

Sometimes I wonder if the gazillion threats these so-called free programmes find are real.
It would be interesting for several people to run the scan and compare findings.

I would never buy a program that told me I had nasties on the computer but they could remove them for a price. Plenty of good freeware out there:
Spywareblaster
Spybot Search & Destroy
AdAware
AVG anti spyware - NOT the same as their anti virus
Ewido

All except Spywareblaster need to be run occasionally. All need to be updated manually every few days. These are only as good as the last update a person installed. Out of date software is useless but it takes just a few minutes to keep these programs current.

Then there are free online scans
Trendmicro
Symantec
BitDefender and others

Terrapots, you mention that your McAfee AV is not current. Please download and install one of the free AV programs, update it, and run a scan on your computer. I recommend either Avast! or AVG.

That list from Randy: They are free. They haven't charged me yet.

Major Geeks is kinda goofy but cool. Like WinSnap: they say its 19.99, but there is a free unlicensed version at Majors. EYEeeeyee.

The world does not make sense to me any more.

I've been running an free antivirus program, and it found a trojan horse and deleted it today before I downloaded the free Spyware Doctor. Curious that Spyware Doctor found something I have to pay to delete. Anyway I will go through that free downloads list and pick up some to install. That's a great list, I especially like the rating for complexities. Right up my alley.
