Spices and oils next to BlueStar range?

My current kitchen plan has spice and oil storage in base cabinet pullouts adjacent to a 36" BlueStar RNB range. I've read that the front of the BlueStar gets pretty hot during baking, so now I am wondering if the pullouts will get warm, too. Should I use the base cabinets next to the BlueStar to store non-food items, instead?

The exterior of a BlueStar range will not get any hotter than any other "prosumer" range on the market.

That said, those pullouts are not the best place to store perishable items due to the heat of any "prosumer" range on the market.

So yes, you're better off storing non-food items, IMO...

i think the front and sides of my bluestar seem like they get way hotter than the dynasty range i had in my last house got. it's one thing i'm fairly displeased with about the bluestar.

i wouldn't keep any spices or oils right next to the sides.

Thanks Thusie; Repairclinic was one of my first ventures...I pored over their 481 (to be exact) igniter styles and found no BlueStar matches.....Before I write them off, I will call them...as you say, they are known to be phone-responsive..... Thull....I tried the penetrating oil...problem is, the flange on the igniter is covering the screw's hole entirely, and the whole unit is torqued down, dis-allowing any penetrating oil to even get to the threads.....Upon examining the snapped screw, I can see the screw body has "become one" with the cast iron...don't think oil can even get in there...Another problem arises in the fact that it is a blind hole....(only access to one side of the hole) Since I now know I need at least three igniters, I'm going to heat the screw with a small torch...this seems to be the most efficient way I've found... Thanks for all the input here...I'm not giving up yet....even looked into repairing/reglazing the hairline cracks....(was told to try this from one of the many igniter dealers I talked to)

We are putting in a 6 inch pull-out next to the stove (like Buehl's) but cab company does not do adjustable shelves - darn! I hope we can put some bottles in there. We are also borrowing the idea from Mommadadapaige to put the spices on the back of the upper cab - loved that idea! And we may end up putting the oils and vinegars inside the cab - we have to wait and see how the pullout turns out. Like Sara-the-Brit, we currently have some of these items on a turntable on the counter next to the stove and may continue to do this - very convenient! Also, if you store your oils in opaque bottles the light won't interfere with it and turn it cloudy, etc. Great thread!

Bluestar is still the closest thing to a commercial range available, both for what it features and what it doesn't. For a homeowner, this could be a good thing or bad thing as the case may be. However, most people's culinary aspirations are much higher when shopping for a range than in ordinary life. If you're going to spend $$$$$ on a range, what are you really paying for, other than a brand name and a cool look? I basically wanted a restaurant range for my house: high BTU burners and commercial baking sheet capacity. At the time, Bluestar was the only option. Otherwise, I couldn't really have justified the crazy cost jump from GE/Kitchenaide to Viking/Wolf as those premium brands didn't really provide any more actual functionality. The Capital Culinarian seems on par performance-wise to a BS. I personally prefer the look of the BS, but that's just me. And for the record, the Eurostoves/Culinarian website is an abomination.

I wouldn't put a spice cabinet beside an oven. I know the ovens are insulated. But nonetheless, when I stand in front of my ovens (I have 3) I feel the heat. As a matter of fact, the floor tile in front of my Double/Single oven get's warm when the bottom oven has been on. Spices and oils shouldn't get warm and cool, warm and cool in my opinion. Are you putting in an island? I have my spices in a 7' deep cabinet that I put at the end of our island facing the range. It works great for us.

We did pullouts on each side of our range & our cabinet maker slotted them for narrow inserts to hold skillets, trays, or racks. On one side, the inserts run sideways to allow for more skillets, and the other side runs front to back for wider items. Here's a photo:

I have my spices and oils in pullouts next to my Bluestar. They never feel warm at all, and are doing just fine there.

This is a great question and I'm also very interest to read what others have experienced. I'm still in the planning phase of my own kitchen remodel. In my current plan, I have an 18 inch area right next to the range for spices/oils. I had intended to insulate this area along the side next to the range regardless of what range I end up with (currently leaning toward a 48 inch BlueStar).

I also have a spice pullout next to my BlueStar. My approach would be to worry about it if and when it becomes a problem, but DH is a nervous nelly and is already thinking about screwing a piece of rigid board insulation (like that pink foam stuff you'd find at HD) in the cabinet since there's room behind the face frame to do it.

Thanks for the perspectives. Nice BPO, Gizmonite! Straw_bale, does the pull-out next to the BlueStar feel warm when you bake? I have room to put 1" of insulation on either side of the range, and cover it with a filler piece in the cabinet run, but I'm not sure this would look well. Moving the spice/oil pullouts messes with my kitchen plan a bit, so I would really prefer to leave them there...

I have no idea how hot it gets in the pullout. Other than the burnoff process I haven't really used the oven and at that time I didn't have anything stored in the pullout. I'll be roasting a chicken tomorrow so I'll have some more data available :)

As I said above, I have never noticed any heat in my pullouts and I've used the oven a lot.

i was pretty surprised at how hot the sides and front of my newly-installed BS felt during the burn-in process, but when i opened the adjacent cabinets and felt the insides of them, they weren't hot.

i have cabinets that are built with 1 1/2" plywood boxes, so that must be adequate enough, insulation-wise.

personally, i wouldn't want spices and oils in base pullouts simply because it seems much more difficult to access them. i'm planning on doing a oil and spice pullouts in one of my uppers flanking the vent hood for just that very reason.

Edlakin, you said it wasn't hot. But was there any warmth at all? Like anything more than room temperature. TIA.

no, not on the inside of the adjacent cabinets. wasn't even warm.

OK, so I used the oven for about 1.5 hrs at around 350F and the spice pullout didn't get warm at all. It feels hotter than Hades every time you use the burners, but nothing goin' on with the pullout.
