How to over winter hardy Opuntia in wet/snowy climates?
Comments (4)If you have doubts then grow them in a pot, in the ground. Remove it when the weather gets too wet for a long time. Cold Hardy plants are just that, they can take the snow, and wet when it melts. My plants here in Calif must be able to handle temperatures down into the 20F wet and all I just turn the pot on it's side so it can't receive more rain, protect them, that is why I use square pots, so they won't roll off the tables. LOL I also use bubble wrap over them when it rains like today if they are housed on tables with no green house roof. I have seen catus grown in Denver, Colorado, next to a big rock which will holds the heat, any heat of the day. Some people shelter them with a drop cloth of 2 ply nursery green house stuff, placed over the plants held up by construction blocks, down just barely over the tops of the plants. In Russia they make miniature whoop houses 2 feet or less above the soil. Held down with the snow or rocks. Really I have seen pictures of this. I'm sure glad that I don't live in snow country, I'm cold here and it only goes down to 60F in the house. I'm freezing. Norma...See MoreBlown insulation - R Factor in Dallas and roof pitch?
Comments (1)Hi, I don't see why a steep pitched roof needs more insulation -- did he say why he thought that? It can be harder to get a lot of insulation at the outer edge of shallow pitched roofs just because there is not much clearance. The attached link give Energy Star recommendations for attic insulation by climate. The R49 looks in the ball park for total insulation level for Texas. Hopefully they are planning to use cellulose and not fiberglass. Gary Here is a link that might be useful: EStar insulation levels...See MoreRoof construction for low-slope roof (1:12)
Comments (5)Metal will be expensive because it must be mechanically crimped for that slope. Don't use a standing seam capped system. Avoid cross seams. Rubber roofing would save a great deal of money and you wouldn't be able to see it. Don't let anyone go to school on your house....See MoreHelp with roof pitch on 8’ ceiling new build!
Comments (59)Angela, sometimes Life decides things for you. You must be a pretty young retiree if you haven’t experienced that! We were in our early 40’s when the other half was diagnosed with a permanent debilitating disease. It sure changed a lot of plans! He retired disabled, and I became a Certified Aging in Place Specialist to help others who faced trying to live in their existing homes or create accessible new homes. A retirement home should be fully accessible. That starts with the approach and entry into the home being step free. It’s great that you think you won’t move from this home. Given some of the issues with it though, you will be facing some remodeling at some point. Don't you think that it would be better to address some of its issues before it’s built rather than down the road when income and ability may not be as great as it is now? Why design in accessibility problems that you will really regret and will need to change? This forum can really help you with many issues, both functional and aesthetic, if you will allow it to. Defensiveness is only hurting you. Good luck with your project!...See Morecarolyn53562
