Sub-Zero Glass Door vs. French Door models

Help! I am trying to decide between these two models (in 36") and I am SO torn and I need to make a decision by the end of the week. I love the idea of the glass door, I am a pretty organized neat person and I think it would force me to be even more so and even "stage" my fridge so to speak. Also it is in a long wall of cabinets and I think the glass would break up the space. On the other hand, I have a counter depth Samsung French Door fridge right now and I do love the functionality of a French Door. As for space, we have an entertaining kitchen / bar in our basement with a full size refrigerator I use for overflow. (It's only the 3 of us so I only really use it for parties). And we are putting a Sub-Zero beverage center in so that will eliminate a lot of the waters / sodas. So in other words, I don't really need the space and get away with a glass door fridge. Thoughts?

Hi. If money is no issue, you will probably love the Subzero. The look is high end and if you're neat, you can't beat the wow factor of the glass. Not to mention, th SZ is really great at food preservation and proper temp and humidity control. On the other hand, if your budget is stretched and you already own a working fridge that you're happy with, you have to know when to stop spending.

That particular SZ is the best looking fridge on the market IMO. It has the added bonus of being a statement piece. I thought I might need to replace my fridge, which is a 36" bottom freezer Viking. The glass-door was my #1. True, you lose door storage. But yesterday, I was at Lowe's and found myself in the fridge aisle while looking for an air filter. While I was there I started looking at the FD fridges -- LG, Samsung, GE, Frigidaire. I didn't like any of the interiors at all. For me less inside is more. The one I liked the least had that double door thing.

I know most people adore the FDs. I find them fussy.

I'd look at the issue in terms of use -- everyone organizes their differently. So for me it would be whether the inside config of the SZ would function well. Style wise it's a no brainer.

I cant comment as to the monogram, but we have had the KA in for 3 months and have no major complaints. Its been fairly quiet. The water on the door comes out through a filter and it tastes good enough, that I have considered getting rid of the bottled water delivery. We dont use tons of ice, but the icemaker capacity is very large compared to my last kenmore. I paid about 5500 and couldn't justify spending 7000-12000 on the sz even though the one w/the glass door looks amazing. As to the lights looking cheap, I dont know what the lights should look like, but throw a few items into the fridge and I dont think you'll notice at all. My only complaint was on the door shelves for the fridge side. The fronts come up fairly high and items dont come out as easily as I would like, but I have gotten used to it. Good luck.

We have five sliders and five french doors (Pella)...and a lot of window washing! The french doors are all single doors and twp of the sliders are doubles (i.e., four panes of glass each). We live in the Sacramento area and enjoy bringing the outdoors in. The screen doors on the sliders are spring-loaded so they close behind you automatically, a very handy feature. Space wasn't a concern for us and we easily could have accommodated french doors throughout but for us the focus wasn't on the doors but rather on the view and the sliders are very unobtrusive in that respect. And although our home is an old-world Tuscan design, the sliders work just fine aesthetically. On the subject of window washing, we discovered the Mr. Clean AutoDry Car Washing system makes washing all those windows a breeze. It's a device that attaches to the hose and dispenses either soap or clear water. But it also dispenses de-ionized water for use in the final rinse so that windows can self-dry without spotting...a big time saver. No squeegeeing, no wiping and the windows are spotless! We wash the windows with a sponge mop, rinse with water and DI water and we're done. If you have divided light windows, it wouldn't be of much help but for large panes of glass, it's invaluable. Bob

Thanks for your input. A fully integrated refrigerator allows the Ã¯Â¿Â½doors of the refrigerator to be completely flush with the cabinets next to it. The hinges allow the door to fold into the cabinet, rather than outside it. Ã¯Â¿Â½A Ã¯Â¿Â½counter depth refrigerator will stick out a couple of inches, and even if panel Ã¯Â¿Â½ ready, will still show an inch or 2 of the sides of the refrigerator. I've even been told counter depth panel ready will show a bit of metal on the front door. It has to do with the door hinges. I didn't think there was a difference between built-in and fully integrated, but I could be wrong. My issue with SZ is the lack of split shelves, which we occasionally use to stand taller items like opened wine bottles or pots of soup. We are a family of four, with 2 boys 10,12 who are definitely hitting growth spurts! Ã¯Â¿Â½The SZ FD also only comes in 36" vs JAN 42", so there is smaller capacity. I'm wondering if we shouldn't just go with panel ready counter depth so we have more brand options and see if we can customize the cabinets to hide the sides. BK - you are just flat out wrong wrong here. SZ makes their own fridges in their own factories, and about the only thing that is of Whirlpool design is the $50 ice maker unit that 60+% of the industry uses ! They fabricate their own steel and plastic cases, source their own, copper and glass, spray their own insulation , designed their own ethelyene filter, and on and on. Whirlpool wasn't even in the fridge business until a decade after SZ was producing theirs , and the only reason Whirlpool got in it was because of a merger. and, we all know about mergers. SZ has and these units in real homes for twelve plus months already , so they kinda know what is flawed with them. These also aren't just some half baked platform off the drawing board like your Maytag example. Further , Maytag ceases to exist because they were boneheads. Their Neptune debacle blew a hole in the ship, and the Amana acquisition enlarged it. And guess who picked up the pieces folks? Yep, BK's white knight and general do gooder, Whirlpool. Happy, I know it's a tough decision for you right now with this model change especially since they are different sizes. I would go for he new design, simply because that 7xx platform is almost twenty years old now and the 36" one is not the best size anyway. Have you considered one of the 36" ers from one of the Miele, Gaggenau, Thermador cousins? They are all top quality and roughly the same price as that 736. Available now and first of the year no changes, proven platform with nice features, and they integrate very smoothly.

You say you entertain. Whether you're using the bar fridge as your entertaining fridge with overflow in the kitchen, or vice versa, the stuff in the glass door fridge is likely to look pretty bad.

I try to keep my fridge neat and tidy, but when I entertain and am making bunches of dishes, it's all about what I can fit where. As food moves from ingredients in bags to finished in containers to ready to serve in bowls and platters, I'm always rearranging to make things work, and the everyday stuff gets stacked and shoved and tucked in where there's room.

In short: I am embarrassed when a guest opens my fridge!

I do keep a good hand on food safety, but everything else is up for grabs.

Oh! Solution! You could always put a "shade" on the glass during parties if unprettiness becomes a problem. :) They sell rolls of vinyl for windows just for this purpose. You could cut a piece to fit and just roll it on when you don't want to look at it...

Re the door storage, while it's useful, the items in the door do get warmer than the rest. You can use organizers to corral bottles and jars, as well as the butter and cheese. :)

I can't tell you which to get. My choice is panelled, solid, no see 'ums. :)

I've got my eye on the new 42" FD, only a couple hundred more than the 36". No way I could deal with a glass door, not enough OCD.

I just don't get why people want to see the contents of their refrigerators when they're closed. Truly don't understand. Is there a good (or any) reason? To each his own....but what is it?

I think it's purely a "for looks" thing and I will be the first one to admit I think it looks good. That being said, thank you! I think I have made my decision and will go with the FD. I wish I could go for the 42" but at this point in the game it's too late. Honestly should have picked the appliances first and then designed the cabinets around them. Oh well, live and learn. And what I am going to end up with will be WAY better than what I have, so I am excited!
