Calacatta Gold Bathrooms - slab question

Hello,

I am in the midst of remodeling his/hers master baths. Each are done with Calacatta Gold marble. For hers: 3x12 herringbone floor, 3x6 brick pattern in shower and 1 inch mosaic on shower floor. All floor and wall tiles are polished.

For his: 3x6 brick on floor and shower walls, one accent wall in shower of random cut mosaic and floor is 1 inch mosaic. All tiles are polished.

Question: For the tub deck and vanity in my bathroom and the shower seat and vanity in my dh's bathroom, should I use polished or honed calacatta gold for the slab?

My fabricator delivered the cut slabs with the wrong edging. I wanted a straight edge and they did an oggi. Also, stone came honed and I thought it should be polished to match the rest of the stonework in both bathrooms.

Ugh! Of course they will redo everything, but am debating keeping what came if I am given a serious discount. These bathrooms are costing a small fortune and we've waited so long to have them done, I hate to compromise.... but, if honed is better for deck and vanity surface, maybe I should just keep it and deal with the different edge.

I would love your thoughts.

Personally I don't like the look of mixing honed and polished. Also, when marble is honed, the color tends to look different from the polished marble. At least that was the case with our botticino. At first I wanted honed but didn't like the color so we went with polished. It seems that you have seen the slab--is the color the same as the marble in the rest of your baths?

I would make them fix it because you will probably regret it later. There is a reason that you made the choice in the first place. Don't let the money be the factor--these baths need to last a long time.

As far as looks go, I like polished on the vanity top and deck.

Honed marble etches less than polished does. Maybe that helps make the decision?

The local stock also must have to do with demand. I've seen a ton in the Philadelphia area (most of it already tagged as sold). They said they have been getting a lot, but that it's busier than it used to be, and that they're trying to get some slabs that have large, but few veins as opposed to the veiny picture linked above, although there are people that buy both varieties. The stone I used in my bathroom is of the veinier variety, but that's what I wanted. I couldn't find a slab to match because of the differences among lots, etc., so I used leathered antique brown granite. An example of the veining in mine:

Has anyone from this post installed Neolith slab countertops in the north NJ area? I recently reached out to the local Neolith distributor in my area, HG Stones, to get a quote on replacing our current granite countertops (35 sq. ft) and backsplash (32 sq. ft). HG Stones referred to me to one of their local partners to coordinate an estimate/fabrication/install. For 12mm polished Estatuario countertop with mitered edge and 6mm backsplash I was quoted just over $11k for the job; does this seem about right to you (~$167 / sq ft, installed)? Also, can I be confident that the partner they referred me to is skilled in Neolith fabrication/installation or should I go back and try to work with HG Stones, the local Neolith distributor in my area (per Neotlith's website), directly? My last question: Neolith appears to have a 20mm thickness slab product out now. Has anyone see or had this thickness installed? How's it hold up/compare to the 12mm version?

Hey, barncatz: Every word of consolation and support helps. I'm trying not to rush the BS decision, but I know I'll feel much better about the countertop experience once I'm not staring at these sliver add-ons. One of my very early inspirations was Majra's kitchen. She, just like pipdog, used the mosaics for a lovely effect. And this is why I spent so much time last year looking at mosaics. But the mosaics seem a bit too busy (for me) up close. The rest of my kitchen is a work in progress. Lotsa 9-1/2' walls that will need to be painted again (probably a cool white -- the next challenge!), and a ton of natural light coming in. Baseboards, pantry door and trim are all semi-gloss white, and ceiling is white. Kitchen is open to the family room: taupe walls with a white fireplace/mantel -- white trim throughout the entire house. pippiep: Matching grout it is, then! One decision down. :) I've marked out the areas that will require BS tile. As you can see, it's not very expansive, and each one not very large. So, I need to find the correct scale/dimension tile that will look right in these spaces. I think using larger (3x6) tiles in a herringbone pattern will leave me with a bunch of chopped up squares in the bartop and cutout window areas. At least with the newest elongated hex pattern, most of the hexes will be retained.

Leena braich 3:31 PM Update- Bedrosians will let me exchange my polished wall tiles for the honed ones that were more earth tones. At least my floors and walls will be cohesive. There are a lot of plain tiles in that batch so I can use the plain ones on the wainscoting wall. The shower is in a separate room so the room won’t look as busy. I will have mushroom color cabinets to ground the space as well. Once the cabinets and tiles are in place I can decide on the counter top.

Thank you. I am going to have them redo it all. Decided I've waited this long and don't want to compromise. Marble place owned up to the mistake.
Going with polished all around and straight edge.

My kitchen counter and island is Calcatta Gold marble, too. There we went with honed because it would show less etching. We have plenty of marks 6 years later, but I knew that would happen and still love the look. This summer I am going to have a company come in to clean, buff and reseal.

Hi there,

I am in the process of having a 1" calacatta mosaic tile installed for my bathroom and shower floor.

Have you had any problems? Also, do you know what your contractor used to seal it?
