cultured marble shower vs tile shower on 1st floor
Comments (13)would like follow up to this discussion we have older home in DFW area--getting ready to put it on the market shower and master bath need work shower is tiled but 25+ yrs old and probably sheetrock vs cement backed walls--could have some nasty stuff when it is torn out (as our contractor warned us--said he never regrouts older showers when doing remodeling--because most of them just have sheetrock and bad shower pans--but always goes down to the studs) counter tops and tub are cultured marble-- my husband thought to put in granite countertops and new fiberglass tub w/tile top and new tile shower our contractor gave us a fairly reasonable price except it does not include sinks, fixtures and the tile would be pretty basic... we had someone come measure for new cultured marble countertops and tub and also a cultured marble shower stall because most homes in our area have not upgraded their baths ... the cultured marble guy said that because the shower door is more narrow and there is a stepdown into the shower that they would probably have to cut the wall pieces and have a join/grout line vs having them the full length of the tiled walls I asked about having a tile insert line--like 6 x 6 glass mosaic sheets--which he said could be done... anyone have pictures of shower like that or have you done something like that yourself...See MoreCultured Marble & Cultured Granite?
Comments (4)>>plaster & plastic compoundUmmmm.....not quite. Cultured granite is a colored resin with a heavy particulate mix that makes it look very similar to Corian or Swanstone solid surface for a "granite-look" appearance. Because of the clear gelcoat it is non-porous and as easy to clean, but softer than true solid surface. The granite-like mix helps hides the inevitable fine scratches that happen over time. Different vendors will have different colors available. We were going to do Swanstone - love the stuff, extremely durable - but needed a particular showerpan size that a local cultured marble/granite vendor could do, whereas neither Swanstone Corp nor Dupont could. Since we were getting the double vanity sinks to match the shower, we thus used cultured granite for all of it. As the CG product included installation, we probably saved about 30% over a solid surface install. We aren't DIYers so it was an easy decision to go with the CG product. Have had it since 2003 and are extremely happy with it. Everybody thinks it's Corian, although I find it easy to tell the difference as CG is glossier; solid surface is a true matte surface....See MoreOnyx Collection vs Cultured Marble for Vanity Tops?
Comments (4)Interesting, I too am considering one of these cultured marble or onyx vanity tops. But they puzzle me. At my work they redid the ladies rooms a few years ago. One got laminate, others what I believe is cultured granite. I thought it was some sort of shiny corian (or similar) at first, then came across a display in Home Depot made by US Marble that looks identical. The reason I'm considering it is how well it's held up with dozens of people using it every day. It really does look nice. The laminate top on the other hand is totally de-laminating. (Not that I was considering that...just saying) I'm puzzled because it appears to be a plastic impregnated with marble dust and the underside is unfinished. In my old MBR we have what I always called a "cultured marble" vanity/sink top. Mine is almost like china. Like a bathtub. Only beige swirled white 'marble'. It's glazed on both sides. If you open the cabinet you see a smooth porcelain-like sink bottom. Not so with these other cultured marble sinks at work and in HD? They look like foam blown into a mold underneath. Or resin. Have they changed how cultured marble is made over the years? Was it different decades ago? The 2 materials seem totally different. Or did they make total china vanity tops with integrated sinks years ago? Also, my home counter is very cold to the touch. The work/HD counters are warm, like plastic. Any thoughts?...See MoreWhite Corian vs white cultured marble
Comments (2)I would go with the Corian as I've had it before and know how easy it is to clean with bleach and years down the road, it can be refinished, like new. I've never owned a cultured marble top, but I think they are less durable....See Morekgwlisa
