Flea Market Dish Bargains!

Went the the Annual Labor Day Flea Market in Upstate NY.

It was hot/humid and Wonderful!! Got some great 'Dish Bargains'. A dealer was selling 8 Friendly Village - Square Salad Plates for $5.00 ea. - which was already a bagain compared to Ebay prices. He said I'll let you have them for less... I said well, how about $20 for all...and he agreed.... woooo hooo

Another dealer was selling 6 J&G Meaken Stadforshire cake plates (Welcome Home) for $40 w/cups and saucers. She said I'll let you have them for $30... I told her I was only interested in the cake plates and that I just bought 8 Friendly Village plates for $20..She then said I'll let you have the 6 plates for $15...I didn't say anything...then she said how about $10..my DH called out to me - 'You're not buying more dishes'??? then she said how about $8... 'I said sold' !! Then I purchased 4 pink transferware, luncheon plates with pretty embossed edges for $1 each..she had six, but these were in the best condition. It was the end of the day, and they seemed to want to just unload what they were selling.. I went home a 'Happy (Dish) Camper' !!

In two weeks, at the same location, they will be having

'The Largest Yard Sale'. 250 Families participate in bringing their 'stuff' to sell. I've been there before, and that's were you really do well, with so many great things for sale...

That's a good method, having DH yell you are not buying more dishes!! LOL

Enjoy them, and hope you are feeling better..

Please email me, all my info is gone from the DELL fix!! It has been quite a terrible adbenture!

Cait1, I have a brother in Melbourne and we might end up living in Tassie in year or two, I'd love to open a little mosaic studio down there, just a dream but one that will hopefully come true some day in the not so distant future. I haven't bought anything from the US for a while, it was fantastic when our $ was about the same as theirs but not so good at the moment, hopefully it'l pick up again soon and we can start buying again - YAY!! As for the postage I try and get as much stuff as I can that will fit into an $11.95US parcel, I think it holds around 2 or 3 kgs so it works out quite economical to do it that way. I love fleamarkets and yard sales! Earlier this spring I trash picked an old wooden chair with a broken cane seat. I put a galvanized bucket into the seat frame where the cane originally was and filled the bucket with nasturtiums (I drilled drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket). It looked really cute, and I was looking forward to the nasturtiums climbing all over the chair back. Unfortunately, I didn't consider the fact that the chair was largely veneer rather than solid wood. The whole thing fell apart during a few weeks of rainy weather. I picked this up at a yard sale last weekend along with a nice strawberry jar and a cool frog for the garden: Behind the birdbath you can see the old iron gate I picked up for my potager. Also, you can see one of the pair of huge, handmade Italian terra cotta pots I got on Craigslist for a song (something about the perspective of the photo makes it looks small, but they are really huge). I just read in Fine Gardening a tip from someone saying they collect old crystal doorknobs and insert them in the top of bamboo poles to decorate their stakes. Sounds great. Susie - thank you! The doors are part of our new foyer/garage addition, and with the sidelights and transom it's a 10' x 10' entry. We stained them ourselves which was quite a job, and unfortunately the afternoon sun hits them pretty hard so we'll probably be spending a lot of time maintaining them, but I really like them. On a good night, you can see the moon through the transom. Allison, thank you so much. I was thinking it would be about 1 yard for each chair. Surprisingly, there were none listed on ebay. Guess I was hoping some people would want to make custom slips and sell the ones that came with the chairs, but it doesn't appear so. I love what I've seen of your style, and really admire how your casual and more formal furniture pieces work so well together. That's something I need to work on, since I like both. I can't wait to post pictures of other rooms soon and get advice for furniture placement and paint colors. Right now, almost all of the rooms have tools, drywall and flooring piled up in them, since we're just entering the finishing stage of the whole house remodel. I'm so looking forward to having my house back to normal and get to the fun stuff! I think I'll keep an eye on the Highgate table over the next week or so. It has such nice thick legs, and would make a nice coffee table. That will probably be my next post!

I called my local community action program to check into Meals on Wheels for these folks..geesh they have to call themselves..guess I'll take a picnic to them at the flea market this weekend and just come out and tell them about this program and give them the #. I'm also taking a styrofoam cooler with ice and a few quarts of my soup to take home along with some ham slices, and a loaf of my banana bread. I'll also send a loaf of homemade bread that I'll pick up sat morning at the bakery. This is such a small amount that I wwon't even miss it but I'll know they are eating for a few days. I probably can't do this every week..but somehow I'll get them involved with the meals program ...than I will call it a day. One other thing they save aluminum cans that they haul into the scrap yard...I talked to the drunk across the street yesterday and he's going to save his beer cans so that approx 30 cans a day. Lol. Enough about this onto laundry.

Kathleen, sorry to hear about you losing all your pc info...that's a bummer. I will forward you my email.
That happened to me a few years back, and then afterwards I printed out all my email addresses for safe keeping.
DH keeps hounding me to put all my files and pics on a disk for safe keeping...I just keep putting it off.
As far as DH yelling out ... I had to laugh, cause when I questioned him on it ...he just smiled and said he thought it would help, and it did!!

lynn...I'm thinking up all sorts of tablescapes to use with these dishes. I've slowly been collecting some on ebay and now I'm just adding to my collections, and I'm looking forward to taking pics when I use them.

Kathleen, so SORRY for you and your computer woes! Computers are wonderful when they are working but like my DH always says, when they don't work, they are enough to make a grown man cry! Hope you get your problems sorted out.

Jane, I was so excited for you! How great that you found so many you really liked at bargain prices. ;o) Woo Hoo for us too when we get to see the pretty tables you create when you use them! Be sure to tell about that next sale too, that sounds fantastic!

Kathleen, sure hope the "tech guys" can figure out how to retrieve all your stuff. I've gone through that before too and it's sure not fun. I still miss some of the great inspiration pics and graphics I had collected. At least with the emails hopefully you can collect them all again as you receive emails from friends/family.

Ohh, am I envious. Organizational sales are just about done here for the season (boo hoo) but as DH might remind me, I'm still unpacking! (that's no excuse for not buying dishes.)

I'm taking him with me next year, maybe I can get better prices. What a funny story! I'm still waiting on my dining table (DH is going to build) but we did go to a store in town where I had seen a ($3,200!) table that I want to copy, only in a smaller size. So at least he's got the idea now.

Hurry up with the tablescapes! I love seeing what you do with bargain dishes.

Kathleen, I always back up but when I consider all the stuff I keep on the computer sometimes I worry that both disks will crash at once--it COULD happen. Computers are our best friends and worst enemies...
