Central Vacuum system?
Comments (13)So my parents had Central Vac when I was growing up. I thought it was the worst thing ever with the super long hose! But my Dyson is broken and doesn't seem to do a great job either. I figured I would just get a Rainbow or Kirby. Does Central Vac really work that much better than a regular high end vacuum? My whole basement will be carpet. Does Central Vac not work well on carpet? Main floor will be tile/wood/rugs except carpet in the master. I love the idea of sweeping the kitchen into a central vac opening. I do plan to do one or two really nice robot vacuums to get the every day cleaning done. Also plan to have a housekeeper 2x a month. But, I would still put the money into central vac if it is a better unit than residential vacuums. The parents do use their (new house) central vac in the garage to clean the car....it is pretty sweet for that!...See MoreHow important is central vacuum?
Comments (36)Like Dave, I also have a central vac, cordless Dyson and two Roombas. We have always had dogs that shed and really like to keep our surfaces as free of dog hair and dirt as possible. I grew up with a central vac and didn't even consider putting in in my first home. I thought it would be a stupid upgrade. I missed it within a month of living there. When we built our current home we made sure to install one. Nine years later, robot and cordless vac technology has improved tremendously. We run our Roombas at least every other day and it's crazy what they pick up. We use the cordless Dyson fairly frequently as well on the floors and sofas. Due to our busy schedules, we typically just use our central vac once or twice a week. We have hide a hose which is a dream to use but it's still easier to clean around the kitchen and family room without being tethered to a hose. Regardless of whether or not you go with a central vac, you still need some form of a full size corded machine (central, upright, canister w/ powerhead, etc.) if you have any kind of rugs or carpeting in your home. I can hear the fine grit traveling through the hose of the central vac (and my Miele) when running it over rugs. Buy a machine you will actually be inclined to use. My parents never use their central vac anymore and stick with their lightweight Riccar upright or cordless Dyson....See MoreCentral Vacuum & Alternatives
Comments (37)Don't you love seeing an old thread resurrected by someone who has never posted before, but needs to bash a whole industry or a specific product! Since I posted here 3 years ago, I'll add an update. Been in the new house for 17 months and very happy with the Hide-a-hose central vac we installed. We have a wide large one story house, so I installed a unit at each end of the house. Works great when two people are cleaning. I have wood floors and tile throughout the house and also have 3 dogs. The central vac excels in this situation. I also have hand knotted area rugs and those just get the regular floor brush attachment and should never have a beater brush used on them. And since they are area rugs, they can easily be lifted/flipped to clean the underside and the rug pad. I also have a Miele canister that we used in the guest house of our previous house, but it sits unused as the H-a-H central vac is easier to use and does a better job. All different vacuums have uses and positive/negative aspects, but I have been very happy with the central vacs in the 4 houses we have owned over the years, specially now that I have the hide-a-hose version....See MoreHardwood floor attachment for Beam central vacuum
Comments (2)I have a dust mop vacuum attachment on my central vac. It looks like a dust mop but you attach it to the vacuum's wand. It dusts but there's an opening at the bottom that sucks up crumbs and hair that escapes the mop head. The mop portion peels off like velcro and can be thrown in the wash. I haven't done that either - I just suck all the hair off after every few uses. I think I got it online at Centralvacuumstores.com or something like that. You can probably find it on Amazon too....See Morehousefairy
