Oh Lynn..that is so lovely and what a great buy. I love the lines and the size of it. It really makes a statement even on its own. I think it would go perfectly w/your B&W. I love that look too. Very elegant. I've been seeing lots of mercury pieces..but nothing in that price range. I was in Michaels recently, and they had some candle holders and various pieces, but they were not cheap.
You did real well...I'm looking forward to when you use it and show us.

That is beautiful, Lynn! And a great winter decoration piece. I was in Ross two weeks ago and they had a HUGE red mercury glass platter, for $12. I grabbed it right up for Christmas, it will make a great base for some decorating.
I should check out Marshalls, it just not very close so rarely get over there. But I love the store, always find some goodies I don't need. LOL

I ran errands down in town all afternoon. While I was there I stopped back at Marshalls. They're out of the silverd mercury glass whatever-it-is-that-I-have, but now have the same thing in a brass colored mercury glass and copper colored ones as well.

What a beautiful piece! I was never really drawn to Mercury glass before seeing all the great items everyone has been showing on this forum, now I really like it! I especially like the shape of the piece you got Lynn. It will look great on its own or in a tablescape!

Thanks! I've decided that this piece (what would you call it?) is too small for the top of the wine cabinet, which is tall to begin with, and too fragile to pack away until Christmas Season. I now have it displayed on our antique buffet in the dining room. The top of our buffet is so shiny because it has a piece of glass on it to protect it's mahagony top.
So, what do you think? Does it look too stark there? I can't add too many other things, as we use the buffet when we eat dinner to put platters on, etc. The candleholder statue is resting on a stack of antique books. The other piece, an old silverplate jardiniere, used to be in the middle there, but I moved it over to the side to add more visual bulk to the buffet lamp. The silver salt & pepper shakers are antiques, but we do use them.

Bumping this up, as I'm anxious to hear any suggestions for my buffet.

I like it there. You could always put it and the shakers on a silver tray for easy moving if you want to decorate around the base of it with other things, like little pumpkins or florals. Saw that idea on BHG.

Bonnie, it would look great on a mantel, wouldn't it? Unfortunately, our living room mantel is the only one that's not a kiva mantel. Those are too narrow for much. Our living room one, though, just couldn't handle mercury glass anything with these paintings above it . . . which I'm obviously not going to change ;^D

The only holiday I put decs on this one is Christmas, and even that was tough to figure out at first!

OK. I'm going to jump in here. I really love the piece (wish it were mine), but there's something missing. The salt and pepper shakers feel too small next to it. Maybe it needs to be elevated and not centered on the buffet. And then place some other silver objects about half its size at its base (a stack of silver Christmas tree balls if it's December). Finally, if you still want to, add the salt and pepper shakers.
Now, I don't know if that would work, but I'd fool around with it some more. I don't think its present location does it justice.

Lynne, have you ever tried the decorating trick of slipping another picture on TOP of the glass frame of yours for Holiday decorating? I saw that idea somewhere during my Internet prowling late at night. You find pix you like and just blow them up to whatever size you need. No one would even realize they aren't properly framed and just on on the outside of your actual pictures. I have a lot of art that I don't want to move, so I thought that was a good idea.

I looked on google, at pictures of lidded compotes, and that might be what your mercury 'thing' is.

For an easy fix, I would move the mercury glass piece to where the flowers are and move them foward, making a grouping of three. Maybe change the flowers for something shorter in the same piece. Then move the salt and pepper shakers together over on the other side, creating a grouping of three. This would leave the center open for serving. All the pieces are really nice and go well together.

It's amazing to me how you can make mercury glass work in your decor. I never would have believed it--mercury glass in Southwestern/New Mexico design? But you make it look great! I love mercury glass, and all I have is an old mercury glass reindeer that actually is now a clear glass reindeer. I remember it being silver when I was a little girl...
