Asko is also excellent. It always has been. As to why Asko is lesser known, it would seem that this is because Miele has always spent more in marketing services, from the beginning. Therefore, it would not be false to say that buying Asko means more dollars go to the other functions instead of marketing.

Under Davidro1's theory the more obsure the maker the better. Northland> Subzero and Kuppersbusch' ovens > Gaggenau.

Miele also much great selection of products and bigger sales numbers to amoritize the cost of marketing.

Also Asko did have severe quality problems with regards to the their dishwashers about 7 years ago that they seem to have recovered from.

Also Asko dishwasher have no water softner.

Asko dishwashers are also noisier.

Two people who claim to be audio experts of different sorts have posted on this site that although Miele is quiter that Asko noise is more "pleasant" to the human ear.

Asko is a good dishwasher but there is a reason why Miele is considered the best and has far greater sales numbers here and in Europe in the luxury class. And it is not simply that Asko management is too stupid to spend marketing dollars.

i haven't read great things about the double drawer dishwashers---anyone have regrets about not getting a dw with hidden controls? Our kitchen isn't big, so I thought the flush with controls showing would be more practical. Thank you!

I don't think the size of your kitchen has relevance to buying either a fully integrated,partially integrated,or full console DW.

The fully integrated looks nicer especially with a custom panel IMO. But some people really like seeing the stages of a wash cycle and older eyes can see the full console buttons better. I think the theory that full console controls are less repair prone are no longer valid.

We have an Asko and really like it. Super quiet to my ears (although we came from a portable!). We have the lower end model (1100) and it does a great job.

If you were doing a full kitchen remodel, I'd suggest going with a Miele that you can have a cabinet door installed on the front of the unit so it all blends in. But if you are just replacing a current dishwasher or want the stainless front, I prefer the ones with the visible controls on the door and the hidden handle.

I got the Diamante G2143SC last year and have been very happy with it. Everything comes out clean, and it is much quieter than my last units (GE, Electrolux). I would just suggest to anyone who gets a Miele dishwasher, that you should use their brand of detergent tabs, rinse aid, and the salt for the water softener. I cut the detergent tabs in-half and only use one half per wash.

By the way, if you can wait a few weeks, the new Miele G5000 series (called the Futura) will be out. There's a chance they could discount the G2143SC since it would then be a discontinued model at that point. Or you might like one of the new Futura models more and buy one of those.

mskitchen - I like the 500 series unit, but I like the SHV58E13UC unit better (see other thread on KA KUDE60FXSS)

Regarding the Miele - can you get tall drinking glasses and wine glass on the top tray with the cutlery tray above? Looks like shorter glasses and mugs only fit? I hope I'm wrong.

FYI: I have a KA that is 'partially integrated'. It has two buttons on the front, Start and Cancel, and an LED display of the remaining time. Cycle selection options are on the top row. It was the better compromise for me at the time and I would chose this style again.

We bought an Asko last November and absolutely love it! Incredibly quiet, and I can fill it with a lot of dishes--or should I say my husband can fill it with a lot of dishes!

The rack on the Miele had 3 adjustment positions, low/middle/high.
I keep it in the medium setting and the tallest cup I put in there is 8". If I put it in the low setting, it drops about 1.5" down. But I've never had the a reason to lower it. If I move it all the way up to the highest setting, then it's not enough room for those 8" cups.
So that is why I leave it in the middle.

On the bottom basket, the left side where you put your plates has two fold-down glassware holders. You can use one of those for up to 4 long-stem glasses.

Asko is a fine unit. Very good quality and performance. Almost on par with Miele and only because they have less NA presence and they are a bit more difficult to install.

I'd make the decision based on the racking system, personally.

Vet - that Bosch is not quite on par with the Asko and Miele quality wise! For something similar you need to get their 68 series units that are still made in Germany.

The KitchenAid is bringing up the rear quality wise in this list - they are not the company your momma and granny remember.

The FP drawer(s) are a bit of an odd bird - many people like them and they are pretty well constructed. The Co. is a bit in flux at the moment, but it doesn't seem to have affected quality or distribution. We typically use them in their single config. in bar areas or butler's pantries or on both sides of a sink. I cannot remember the last time a double drawer was speced. Again , study teh racking system before buying.

I was looking at dishwashers at an appliance store today - Asko, Miele, Bosch and Electrolux. People seem to be enamoured with their Miele dishwashers, but of the four, the insides of the Mieles (yes, I looked at several models) seemed the flimsiest and the leaset flexible. Has anyone found this with their mieles? We have a large family and are often serving meals for 7-8 people. Frankly (and surprising to me!) the Electrolux seemed the most sturdy. Bosch is a little scary to me because we had one for several years and it never worked well (moved from that house).

I did not get to hear them - was assuming that they would all be better than the deafening 40 year old KA that is currently residing in the kitchen.

antss - Every Bosch 800 Plus series d/w is "made in Germany".

Every Bosch 800 Plus series unit has a 3rd rack , the serial label is laser etched into the door frame, says it's "made in Germany", has a built-in water softener, and has variable spray pressure.

The SHV58/SHX58 is built just the same component wise as the SHV68E/SHX68E or the SHE68E.

I'm fully convinced the SHX58E15UC and SHV58E15UC is the best valued upper-end d/w on the market.

Hi Susans02 - I am also torn between the Miele Diamante or the Asko D5223. Our architect recommended the Asko (he likes the sleekness of it - smaller, thinner handle and has placed them in several homes he's done the past year or so).
Based on reviews I've read (also on Consumer Reports) the Miele seems to get better reviews overall. Although it is about 30% more in price.
I have a while before I have to decide, so until then will keep obsessing about which is the better one!

Well, I have an Asko washing machine. It's less than 5 years old and I have had about 3 or 4 service calls. It's fussy... Things don't always make it to the trap and get stuck in there (dimes in particular). 1/2 is mother board burned out and took us forever to figure out that it wasn't getting hot anymore (just that things weren't as clean).

I know, its not a DW, but I just don't think they are as high as quality as Miele. Next washing machine will be Miele.

They are still on my s list in general though - as long as they keep trying to tell me that their NewBern made units are still high quality and state of the art.

The Euro units may bring them back to the front of the class but it's still a tough sell when they are the same price as a comp. Miele. The 68 was +/- $2k in Dec. as I recall - so not exactly a bargain.

@workingondreamhouse That is an odd observation, as I have observed the complete opposite of your findings. Well, I am not debating with the least flexible part(not agreeing to it either) And if you look at the entire unit (not installed in cabinets) you will see how superior built a Miele is to anything else. Miele is built like a bank vault compared to the others. Although a very nicely crafted bank vault.

@denisehess - that's why I like the looks of the Asko too! I thought I wanted hidden controls but I felt like the handle on the Miele was soooo bulky. So, I was leaning towards a flush front but that shows controls. I'm gonna try to make up my mind after the weekend!

Yes I'm sure I'm way too late, but I'll comment anyways. Being a Canadian/American now Australian. Miele and Asko are much bigger here than NA. Reason being, electricity, water et cetera are much dearer here than there. So we use as commonplace, Euro appliance compared to larger dishwashers and washer and dryers. Also something like a vented dryer is not as commonplace save for very cheap models. I've had experience with both Asko, Miele and a Samsung. Now we are talking about an Asko washer and dryer not a D/W. However currently every appliance I own including vacuum is a Miele. I first paid about $4200AUD for the Asko top line W6884 Eco washer and matching T784C (I think it's the right model) dryer. To say the least, I liked one and one thing only on the Asko washer, it didn't have the typical rubber bellow seal and instead a flush mounted door with a small gasket on the door. A wonderful thing. Other than that Asko, which at the time was moving all production of all appliances from Sweden to Slovenia (owned by Gorenje now, and quite reputable and reliable Euro brand). The washer was a nightmare, leaks, constant electrical issues, repaired 6 times and finally my ex took them away. Build quality was there and the technology was as well, but it just couldn't keep up with its name. Their reliability is on par with Fisher and Paykel, some of the worst D/Ws you can buy, and they are a New Zealand company, so I'm all for supporting more local products. Their fridges are absolutely top notch though. Now that Asko had the resources of Gorenje behind them I'm sure quality will improve; but be weary, make sure there is a long return policy to try it out first. A friend has one, but it's being repaired twice a year. Fair enough. I love the look, the design, the technology and it does clean dishes excellently, and they are exceptionally quiet. However Miele is just a notch above in every aspect. Just an inch better quality, a few decibals quieter, overall better build quality, German engineering, most are still made in Germany, warranties on certain parts are a decade long. They just push the boundaries to make home appliances from excellent like Asko to phenomenal. My D/W and washing machine are eerily quiet. They clean with so little water and such little electricity. The washer has an actual meter that measures the actual electricity and water used to the litre and watt. In 2.5 years my washer has used just over $62AUD in electricity, cold water intake, all heated internally, and many hygiene cycles. If I had the choice, get a Miele, their loyalty rate is at 97%. They are not as well known in the US and Canada but are getting there and now make larger appliances to go head to head with the likes of Wolf and Sub Zero. Askos are great, but Mieles live up to their motto "Immer Besser", Forever Better!

We have an Asko dishwasher. Primarily got it because wolf-sub zero would ensure they had the same stainless steel so would blend in better. We are very happy with the Asko, quiet, sleek and does a very good job. So far no real issues other then the cutlery holder broke. Was replaced within two days.

We've had an Asko for nearly two years now and are very happy with it. Quiet, huge capacity, and cleans well.
