OT Holly Lobby

Holly Lobby opened a store in my area this week.

I went there yesterday. The store is huge.

I was there for about and hour, and didn't see everything.

Do they have good sales?

Did you mean Hobby Lobby?
Because if that is what your store is, they have weekly specials on items throughout the store and have huge advertisements in the paper and on line telling what is on sale for that week. They also usually have a coupon for 40% off of any one item that is not included in the weekly sale.

If it is actually Holly Lobby, then I have no idea.

Wow! After all these years, I'm still uncovering better information on Ilex x 'Virginia'. OK, so it turns out in 1960, a botanist by the name of W.F. Kosar at the US National Arboretum in DC, crossed Ilex integra (female) with Ilex x altaclerensis 'Hodginsii' (a male). The seedlings resulting from this cross were raised in a bed at the Arboretum. In 1993, Gene Eisenbeiss at the Arboretum, named his pick-of-the-litter 'Scepter'. It was introduced by the Arboretum. It can be obtained from only a few holly nurseries. The bed of hollies from the cross has since been bulldozed over, but not before a batch of plants from this cross were shared with the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center, in Hampton Roads, Virginia. These were planted out and observed. One selection stood out for its form and fruit, and in 2009 it was named and introduced as Ilex x 'Virginia' by the 'Beautiful Gardens® Plant Introduction Program' in the state of Virginia. It has not been patented. It is being offered only by a small number of nurseries in the Mid-Atlantic is propagated primarily by one nursery. 'Virginia' looks very similar to 'Scepter' but is just a bit spinier. That's no reason not to grow it though. I would rate Ilex x 'Virginia' as a borderline 6b-7a plant in terms of hardiness. I've seen just a bit of tip dieback on a few branches after the last two winters in my 7a yard, whereas Scepter had no dieback. But Scepter had a bit of shelter from wind. OT Tornado strikes Oklahoma

Lone Grove, the small town in south central Oklahoma that was hit by the tornado is where I went to high school. I lived there again for 12 years before moving here 7 years ago. I have been worried all evening because I had tried the phone numbers for five family members and had not been able to get through. I had feedback from someone on an emergency team that was in the hospital, and said that none of them were there. I later learned that phone service and cell service is out for the entire area. Later I was able to talk to my great niece in Arkansas and she had been on the phone to her mother while it was happening. She had talked to her brother who lived just across the street from my old house, and it had missed him by a quarter of a mile. He left home to go check on their mother. The police wouldn't let him get to her house but they did verify that she was OK...then they wouldn't let him go back to his house, so his family is in Ardmore in a motel. The small trailer park that was hit belonged to the brother of my brother-in-law, and he also lost a house. He did not live in that house, and it is unclear at this time if he lost the house he lives in, but we do know that he and his wife are OK. The store that was destroyed belonged to my BIL's nephew. My sister has 3 sons and 1 daughter (and several married grandchildren) that live within two miles of her house. The storm went between them...north of my sister, and south of the others. The news station said that it hit the UPS building and injured some people in that parking lot. That UPS building was hit previously by a tornado, but only sustained roof damage that time. That tornado then crossed the road and destroyed a building that belonged to one of my nephews. That building is probably about the length of a city block, from where we are hearing that it hit this time. I was certainly relieved when I finally got word that they were OK.

thats of course.. if you are right on the ID ... the easier way.. is to observe a branch.. and measure from the tip.. down to where the bark changes color ... that is how much it grew this year.. presume it will grow at least that much .. FOREVER ... [last years bark has matured and changed its look/color/texture] so if it grows one foot per year... you can do the math ... and if its a recent transplant.. anytime in the last 2 years.. the growth can even get bigger ... as it may not be 'established' yet .... it will only grow less .. due to some weather phenom.. like severe drought ... but it can always do more... if the growth is in excess of one foot ... then it is at least.. ten feet to close to the house ... and the porch.. and the door.. and the walkway .... and even if it is a dwarf.. its still going ot be on that porch in a year or two ... shrubs simply NEVER stop growing... its all about how much they grow each year ... in your zone.. you can probably move it in october or so ... ken

Can you bottle that energy & send it down here? Wow! My mom sounds like yours except she waited too long to go see a dr & did end up in the hospital with the kidney infection. I spent a few days with her & came home tired. Couldn't even think of making the whirlwind tour of the country you did. Congratulations on the new son-in-law. Don't envy you having to put a wedding together though.

I looove HL , a little to much..lol Fortunatly for my wallet and storage capacity , I live over an hour away from the nearest one.

I'm a huge fan of HL. If you see something you really like, wait because it will be on 40-50% within a week or two as they seem to have a short rotation with their sale categories. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but for florals and home decor items they always go on sale. I just bought a large cut of burlap and forgot my coupon. IF I had a smartphone I could have gotten a coupon that way. It's something new they're doing so if you have one of those phones you can use it for your 40% coupon at checkout.

You'll love it, nana! Great for gifts or if you like crafting of any sort ... about every week there is a 40% off coupon ...you can Google ... Hobby Lobby coupon ...& print it off. It's a great store & I also love it because it's closed on Sundays! (good for employees!)

I was just there on Mon ...haven't been for about a month & got some things for Christmas gifts & those clear plastic sheets that I can print on & use around the faux battery candles (like the pic below I shared for St. Pat's Day)...a cool place! Lucky you! Jeanne

I'm doing a little Fall decorating now ...no pics yet...so much work outside & we've had 2 hard frosts...but I love it!

Nana, you are in big trouble now. LOL. HL is more dangerous than Michaels! And they do have great sales. Plus they have "Christmas in July" where they put out several aisles of decorations at 40% or more off. I try hard to stay away from there. And lucky for me (I think) its just far enough that I need someone to drive me (else my legs won't hold up walking that huge place and seeing everything!) If I could get there easily, ohhhh I don't even want to think about that. So I only get to go about 2-3 times a year. Same with Home Goods. Wow, can I ever get into mischief with these two stores!

Girls, I found this great pintrest post on combining Hobby Lobby, Michaels and JoAnn's coupons . They are interchangeable so you can use multiple coupons at either location. I don't know how to move pintrest posts to the
GW/ Holidays, but if any one is interested it is on my Holiday Board on Pinterest. Maybe Karen or someone with better computer skills than I have can repost it on Holidays. It tells how to combine coupons to get the best deals. I haven't tried it yet since we only have a Michaels in our imediate area and haven't gotten to go to a area with all three stores since I found it.
