Do you name your appliances?

Hi,

I am currently researching names given to household and office objects for a study at the University of Mainz, Germany. It would be of great help if you could fill out my questionnaire on http://namesurvey.net - if you could share the URL with others, that would be great too, of course. I only ask about the object's names in the questionnaire, not about your names or contact details. The survey is anonymous and only for research purposes (in the field of onomastics).

I have one of those kitchens, too, without a "real" panty, just a 21 inch wide tall panty cabinet with pull out shelves, but it actually works very well for food items and stores a lot of stuff. I prefer a mix of drawers and doors on the base cabinets, and use a couple of the door cabinets to store small appliances. I keep my food processor, blender, and mixers in one smallish cabinet that has a half shelf (the small accessories go on the shelf). My larger items (crockpot, etc.) go in the corner cabinet ... there is no susan there, but rather shelves that criss-cross each other ... I think it's called an easy-reach option, or something like that. I can store a lot of things in there, including tall things. I also have two narrow base cabinets with doors that are perfect for storing baking sheets and cutting boards (standing on end).

Agree with eleena. In my bathroom, I can't get the cleaner for the tile on the mirror, or the faucet cleaner on the floor, or the floor cleaner on the faucet. You can't clean the whole thing without a damn spreadsheet. Teasing aside, having a simple cleaning service is not an upper class thing, at least not for two-job households. However, the reality is, having an intelligent, reliable cleaning person is an upper-class luxury, unless you happen to be lucky. I would love to have a touchup every week or two. However, I remember what the cleaning people did at my mom's place when she got sick and couldn't do it all herself. Each week, something new was broken, scratched, stained or missing. She couldn't afford to supplement the housekeeper's income by running out and buying new carpets or collectibles or lamps on a weekly basis--which is precisely what you are doing if you allow someone to break something in your house without paying for it. She lucked out for a while with an old Italian lady who cleaned like she did, but for the most part they were more trouble and money than they were worth. Now, if you can afford real staff, then you can get into human resources techniques. But if you can't, then you're not the employer, just a customer, and you take what you get.

My infrequently used ones are stored in my big closet with my other food processing equipment. That includes my four pressure canners, meat and grain grinder, meat slicer, tortilla maker and the steamer, though I think I'd use the steamer more if I moved it and stopped forgetting I own it. I keep my vacuum sealer there, and the big crock pot and 18 qt electric roaster. I also have a blender in there that I about never use. I keep the cast iron there, it's for emergency use on the wood stove if the electricity goes out. The rest are in the kitchen, and I made lots of extra storage for them as I'm a small appliance junky. Belgian waffle iron Electric skillet Rice maker two crock pots Electric wok Ice cream maker (not used that often though) Two stand mixers (one is heavy duty for making bread) hand held mixer stick blender Coffee grinder The coffee maker is the only item that stays out on the counter Not long ago we finally got the window seat done, and that gave me three more drawers for storage. Right now they have my cake pans and other baking equipment that was overflowing from other areas. At one time I though I could store everything in the kitchen, but I keep finding more stuff I want for the kitchen.

My realtor said SS appliances are a must to sell. We were reaching the point where all our appliances had to be replaced. They were not functioning well. So because we are moving in a year we now have new SS appliances, except the fridge. I don't like them very much compared to my old white ones. The fingerprints are super annoying but I hope to purchase some products this week to help. The worst is the Bosch DW with fingerprints. I looked in many kitchen showrooms and there were no other appliances to see. They were all SS. So while you can still order white, its really difficult to see it in person before you purchase. That is a huge frustration since as we know, "white" comes in so many different shades. I do think the newer slate is kind of interesting. We'll see where that goes. And you can always buy those big appliance magnets that change the color!! LOL!

I have a GE microwave which I refer to as "Piece of Crap". Does that count?

I clicked on the link it goes to a web site, but I didn't go any further. I don't name anything so it really didn't apply to me. None of my virus scanners or other malware scanners popped anything after going there, so, at least for me, it appeared to be safe, but use at your own risk.

Err, I am definitely not a troll, and I'm seriously writing a paper on this; if I can get enough data, that is.

And yes, quite a lot of people name their appliances, mostly computers and phones, but also hoovers, fridges, microwaves, even bookends (my favourite so far is a hoover called Gollum). As to why: well, that's one of the things I want to know.

If you don't name any objects, then there's absolutely no need for you to click on that link. If you do, though, your answers would really be helpful to me.

weedmeister, if you consistently refer to that one microwave as "Piece of Crap", that does indeed count. But if you call any appliance that's acting up "Piece of Crap" and the microwave just happens to be called that most often because it's just rubbish, then that's not a name.

I don't know anyone who names appliances. Vehicles, yes, but not appliances or gadgets.

Lacanche owners name their ranges. We haven't received ours but we are currently calling him Jacque after Jacque Pepin. Someone else on this forum call's their Lacanche Julia. There's a youtube video of a chef in NYC who calls his Lacanche Sofia. Perhaps Lacanche owners are 'beyond odd' or at least very passionate.

I have never named my phone, tv, or vehicle.

Well, I do think that a Lacanche (or La Cornue, Molteni, etc.) is different from a regular appliance or gadget.

Had a car named "Grandmamobile." Another was "Blue Devil." Can't think of any appliances I've named ... yet. We'll have to come up with one when we order our new range.

LOL - I can't resist. I only name the appliances I don't like. Like my DCS range which I call a POS (and I don't mean Point of Sale). It's nickname is stupid POS.

I had a swimming pool cleaner that propelled itself around the pool. I went to a pool supply place to get a part for it. The guy behind the counter asked me what its name was?

I sheepishly told him, "The Pool Monster." (Actually named by my talking Bulldogs.)

He indicated that "everyone" had a name for their pool cleaner.

This was in San Diego.
