Vertical or Horizontal spray for a Bidet???

Hello everyone!

I have been reading a lot about bidets and washlets...I have decided that I would prefer a stand alone bidet. My question is, which is better? A vertical or horizontal spray? I understand that the H. Spray is more for "rear" issues, and the V. Spray is more for frontal.

1. Can either type of spray do both areas?

2. If so, does one type of spray do both better then the other?

3. Does a bidet exist that has both V and H sprays?

Thanks for your info and please add anything else that you may think I should know.

Personally, I just hate the look of the washlets as I feel they resemble something you'd find in a nursing home.

Well, the bidet I had in my previous home was a horizontal spray, and I liked that very much. I chose the horizontal spray because I felt it was more sanitary. Not saying that anyone who has a vertical sprayer has an unsanitary bidet...(gotta put in those disclaimers before I get squashed to the ground). It was just a choice I had to make...and that was my deciding reason *shrug*

The Washlet I have is a vertical spray. It seems to work better for rear cleaning than for feminine washing. However, it works for both, and since I did not have room for a seperate bidet, I am darn grateful and worship the washlet :-)

Having had a vertical spray washlet, and a horizontal spray bidet, if I were purchasing another seperate bidet I would choose the horizontal spray again.

i've had a bidet for over 20 years and found that most women prefer a vertical spray while men like a horizontal.

Here in Italy where bidets are considered standard bathroom equipment, most faucet manufacturers make bidet faucets as part of any model line. Usually the difference between a bidet faucet and a standard sink faucet is the moveable head, which allows you to direct the spray to a certain extent. Depending on the shape of your bidet, this could also allow you to overshoot the bidet altogether and wash your bathroom rug/floor by mistake... We had to have our plumber put blocks in a couple of our bidet faucets because of this, but we also had installed slightly shorter bidets due to space constraints in our bathrooms. If you prefer to fill your bidet and then wash, you could probably get away with just using a regular sink faucet, but if you prefer a directional spray your best bet is to find a faucet line that includes a true bidet faucet. I live in the south, so having a warm toilet seat is hardly a consideration. Aftersitting on it anyway, it reaches your body temperature ina couple of seconds. Having used Toto washlets (they are in 2 other Toto toilets inthe house)and a separate Toto Lloyd bidet next to my Toto Soiree toilet, I much prefer the separate bidet. You can adjust the power much higher and you're facing all the control knobs. That said, my brother mostly uses his for a magazine rack and opts for baby wipes. Yeah, it does, but you might get lucky. I don't have upward-spraying nozzles, but I do find the Hunter 15' adjustable spray nozzle does a pretty good job of clearing taller grasses as the spray angle is pretty sharply upwards. And you can change the angular opening to anything you want. You might be able to change out the problem risers with taller ones as well--most companies make 4", 6", and 12" risers.

I used the glass spray on the 3" which is on top of the two tall skinny cabs. I had one frosted and one glass so I had to match them. These will be rarely used. I'm still trying to figure out how to assign the pulls aesthetically so I can avoid spraying the 8" pulls. I have 9 frosted and 13 clear. I bought 11 last night at full price and ouch they were expensive. I have to admit the matt brass finish was so lovely in person. @nosoccermom and Mobuddy. The pulls are real glass so I'm not sure how the spray will fare.

I'm a man and I have to say I prefer a vertical (Spanish style?) over the horizontal (Italian?). Fortunately my house came with a vertical. Now to fix the leaky diverter (Kohler).

Is there some reason you prefer a stand alone?

I am having a Toto integrated washlet installed in my remodel and the wand seems to have options to satisfy both areas :-)

I personally think it would be more convenient not to transfer to a second seat in order to finish toileting - what do you think is the advantage of separate bidets?

I am genuinely curious - I'm not attempting to foist my choice but wondering what made you go in the direction of two separate units.

@georgia: Toto has a new "modern" style that doesn't have that look. It's much thinner and when you combine it with the Connect Plus Toto toilets, it doesn't have the bulky look you seem to be describing.

Also you can buy fully integrated lines - the least expensive one is more or less the same price as a top of the line washlet and toilet.

So essentially it would be form over function in terms of having to transfer to a separate unit to wash. I am thinking of those times when I have to shuffle a few steps because someone forgot to load toilet paper - wouldn't it be the equivalent?

In terms of my own bathroom, it's moot as I wouldn't have space for two separate units but am curious as to why it's preferred if one had the choice of integrated or two separate units.

fyi: i had a soap dish with a towel rack near my bidet and it worked perfectly.

Looking for a modern European style stand alone bidet with vertical spray. Does anyone have a brand suggestion? Most of the ones we found have a horizontal spray.

We bought a really affordable Gerber vertical spray 2 years ago but I believe they discontinued it. You might find one in one of the plumbing wearhouses. Vertical spray is the only way to go for a female. Good luck.
